Despite some minor design flaws, it exceeds expectations. 4

When I first heard about Mass Effect, I was excited beyond belief. Bioware, known for their great role-playing experiences was nearly sure to deliver, and overall, they definitely did. Once you start the game, you get to make your character if you choose not to use the default (made famous by pre-release trailers). The character creation system allows you to decide on your character’s background story, which actually affects what other characters in the game say to you. You also get to customize...

    Missing the point 0

Pinnacle Station, the second DLC package for Mass Effect, is special. I say special, because I have never seen a game developer so spectacularly miss the point of their own game in a follow-up to that very game. Bioware delivered a fantastic product with the first Mass Effect; epic story, compelling characters, and a good balance between role-playing and combat drove the title to success. Pinnacle Station takes a sledgehammer to this mixture.  Pinnacle Station's gameplay eliminates everything...

Mass Effect: Pinnacle Station Review 16

Why do I do it to myself? Next time I must read the description before purchasing. Anyway, after a long wait Mass Effect has got its DLC it was promised all that time ago and after much waiting the result has been about 10x worse than the first DLC, Bring Down The Sky. How you ask, read on. Pinnacle Station starts just like any Mass Effect mission by you traveling to it via your Galaxy Map. When you arrive you are placed in a kind of competition where you must fight through 13 combat scenarios t...

    Mass Effect 3

The game Mass Effect is a third person, over the shoulder shooter that envelops you in a futuristic environment complete with advanced technology, alien races and plenty of drama. The game begins with the creation of your character. BioWare has done a complete job of allowing you as a player to be exactly who you want to be; Gender, personality, history, and of course cosmetic attributes all are able to be customized. After that you choose from 5 classes of character. Each one offering a complete...

Mass Effect was a fun experience, bogged down by buggy graphics. 0

Ok, I need to get this off my chest.  I was not a fan of Kotor at all.  I didn't care for the sci-fi / Star Wars universe.  I didn't like the combat.  I felt the  quest system was to hard to navigate through, and finally, I hated how big and pointless the world was.  The first town you visit is bigger than some games, but it was full of pointless fetch quests and generic NPCs that say the same crap over and over again. </rant over>However, I had fun with Mass Effect, for the most part.  W...

    Emotional. Epic. Engaging. 2

Mass Effect is one of those games that just went over my head when it first came out. I hadn't tried it until my friend lent me the 360 version of it a few months ago. To put it simply, I played for about 6 hours and realized that I just had to have this game. So a few days later I returned Mass Effect for my friend, purchased my own (for the PC), and ended up beating it (twice).    StoryIn the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the d...

No story here - just killing 3

The rumored second DLC add-on for Mass Effect was released Tuesday morning for the public. Available at only 400 Microsoft Points, players can compete in an arena-style simulator and rise up on the scoreboard. To get straight to the point, there really isn’t a story here. Shepard arrives at Pinnacle Station only to be challenged by Vidinos, the cocky leader of the scoreboard. Vidinos challenges Shepard to beat his scores and in return he’ll give up one of his weapons. There are four simulations...

Cool Sci-Fi World, Great Story, Your Way 1

Developer BioWare, famous for such games as Neverwinter Nights and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, it looks to continue to that pedigree with their latest title Mass Effect. The most important part of an RPG is its storyline and Mass Effect delivers, with a Sci-Fi Space Opera of universe shattering proportions. You play as Commander Shepard, this man or woman, can look anyway that you desire with the fairly in depth character designer. After a short first mission you become the first Hum...

A very simple and shallow addon 1

As a big fan of Mass Effect I have been locking forward to more DLC for a while now. The last DLC, Bring Down The Sky, was released over a year ago so this addon has been in production for some time. It is however a very shallow experience that has nothing of what made Mass Effect great (story) and focuses on the average combat system.  The DLC adds a new space station in the Pheonix system. This space station is a training ground of sorts, where soldiers can engage in combat against holographic...

If You Think Boring is Awesome, This is for You 0

If you were hoping for something like Bringing Down the Sky in this DLC, your hopes have just be shattered. If you were hoping for a decent side quest with interesting story line and entertaining game play, your hopes have a run over by a pack of elephants. As with the last DLC a note appears on the galatic map saying that the new content is in this system.  The station is dropped in an existing system that already has a planet you can land on, so if you havent been to this planet yet, it is fa...

I’m not exactly the kind of person who jumps for joy every time another sequel is announced to a gaming landscape that is peppered with sequels. (Some game sequels even have their own sequels; look at Call of Duty or the Tom Clancy games.) Yet, my brain will all but completely block out the existence of a new franchise, regardless of what, if any new ideas it may bring to the buffet table that is the holiday season. Mass Effect went unnoticed by me for a good seventeen months, and I only found m...

Great story, awesome graphics, many upgrades, a must play 0

Description Mass Effect was released on November 20th of 2007.  It was developed by BioWare and published by Microsoft Game Studios and Electronic Arts.  The lead designer was Casey Hudson and the lead composer was Jack Wall.  Mass Effect is one of the first open story line video games. Since I Played the story as a Vanguard I'm going to tell the story that way and what my outcome was.  The story follows a human who has chosen because he is the best of the best.  His name is Commander Shephar...

    Awe-inspiring. 0

To berate this game for its buggy graphics, annoying elavators, save glitches, and convoluted inventory system would be to miss the point of the game entirely. Even years after it's release, its impact still remains: no other game captures conversation and story like this one. It takes a lot of effort to create a fictional universe that is both new and engaging, but this is where Mass Effect excels. Hours can be lost delving into the deep universe and learning more about it's inhabitants. Choice...

Bioware is primarily known for two games-Balders Gate- This game series set a new standard in the fantasy RPG world.KOTOR- Primarily known as the best Star Wars game ever made.As great as these two games are, They and Bioware have been limited by these licenses for a long time, so they decided to bring there great approach to game design to an Original title set in an Original Universe, The result of this is Called Mass Effect, and its one of the Greatest RPG's ever made. The Story in Mass Effect...

An average game that is enjoyable enough, but leaves much to be desired. 0

With Mass Effect, developer BioWare has crafted a profound sci-fi universe that leaves quite a bit to the imagination, while simultaneously delivering it's compelling lore in a way that is organic and feels natural. It is unfortunate that the gameplay fails to be as interesting and well designed, and that the story is not as dynamic as it pretends to be. Mass Effect is a collection of elements that either work really well or really poorly, and it seems like it misses it's full potential, while s...

    A Slightly Flawed Masterpiece 0

Mass Effect is an epic sci-fi action RPG from the folks at BioWare. You play as Commander Shepard, the first human to be inducted into the Spectres, a group of elite agents whose goal is to maintain galactic stability at any cost. Your job is to hunt down Saren, a rogue Spectre Agent who, without giving too much away, wants to use old technology to do bad things. That's the basic gist of the story. And I mean basic. It's near impossible to sum up the story in a few sentences because the Mass Ef...

    Mass Effect Review - Xbox 360 0

2007 was a legendary year for the gaming industry. It was a year that was loaded with what would have been potential game of the year choices for any other year. It seemed as if that another triple-A title came in with every passing week. 2007’s releases were of such quality that one may even be so bold as to say that the bar for game developers all over the globe has officially been raised to a whole new level because of them. Considering this, it would undoubtedly be a difficult task to select...

The easiest way to describe Mass Effect, is that it’s like Kotor…on crack. For better or for worse though there are a lot of similarities to Bioware’s two previous games, Kotor and Jade Empire…fortunately though this one for the most part does not disappoint. I definitely had a love/hate relationship with this game through the first half of playing it, going from moments where I felt it was the greatest thing since sliced bread and then encountering things that quite literally made me shut off t...

Upon playing a game, many questions run through my mind as to what I think about the product as a whole. You might think graphics, sound, action, explosions (aka eye candy) are what makes a good game. To me the quality of its greatness is not justified by things that last only the first two minutes of playing a game. The thing that grabs me in a game are great characters that are interesting and a story that sends chills down your spine. Characters that have motives that relate to you, someone y...

Simply put, if you haven't experienced Mass Effect then you really haven't entered the "now" generation.  From its incredible scale to its dialogue to the wonderfully written characters and themes, Mass Effect is a golden god.  You are Commander Shepard, charged with freeing the galaxy from an evil rougue specter named Saren.  It is this course of action that leads to an incredible ending that I won't spoil.  Inventory can get a little clustered, mild frame dips (nothing serious), side missions ...

The best part about Role Playing Games is the fact that they are made for the gamer to experience the adventure at both their own pace and for the most part, branch the story to their specification. Because of this, RPGs can last a long time and you will still only experience a fraction of what the developers have to offer.Mass Effect is a perfect example of a solid Role Playing Game; one with a great story that is possible to play a number of ways. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but damn was the entire ride of Mass Effect an excellent one.The atmosphere and story still hold up really well 6 years after release. Mass EffectCombat: Since this an action rpg, combat stands out as the most important part. It's third person real time with a pausing mechanism where you can choose which of your abilities to use and switch your guns out. You have yourself and two companions out of a total of six on the battlefield. You fully control yourself and may take cover, lean out and shoot, or be a total dumbass and run right in front of the enemy shooting. You also do a melee attack with your gun if you are close enough...

Dissapointing, to say the least. 0

Mass Effect was for me at least was hyped beyond belief mostly by my friends who bought it and said "it's revolutionary" or "it's better than oblivion" (yeah right). So maybe it just didn't live up to the hype but I think it's just as bad as I think it is.    First off the combat system is far to easy and boring, you can get through every fight in the game by simply taking cover and using the lock on feature to pick all enemies off, with no need to aim at all, fights get extremely repetitive. Mass Effect was released in 2007 as the first Sci-Fi western RPG. This caused quite a stir in the gaming community, as the game’s developer, Bioware, had been known for their excellent renditions of RPGs in the past, such as Jade Empire and Baldur’s Gate. Anticipation mounted, and upon release, this game made a mark as one of the greatest western RPGs in existence. Set in a futuristic universe, Mass Effect is a squad based RPG, which blends combat, characterization and story into one, unique be...

Mass Effect for PC: A Shiny Gem in a Turd-filled Bucket of Issues 8

Mass Effect, a hallowed and highly anticipated RPG from BioWare first graced the Xbox 360 last year and was subject to many favorable reviews and commendations. Sadly, this is not the case for the PC version. While it has potential to be as great as its console sibling (where potential is measured by the power of your PC), it ultimately fell short when ran on something less beefier. I played Mass Effect on a machine slightly over the minimum requirements and I was shocked at how poorly it scaled...

I played this game for like three hours and people who loved it says I didn't play it enough.   I say I played it all too long.  Horrible game play, unimaginable dull universe with nonsensical plot (if I found any).   I talked to a blue prostitue with tentcals on her head. She wanted my help, but since this was RPG I wanted to play the anti-hero so I said "No!". Then the game stagnated. Nothing happened while I looked at spiderlike creatures controlling a huge spaceship I wanted off of.  This ga...

RPG's are one of the hardest type of games to get into. Due to their usually lengthy Story, very involved gameplay and numerous quests, you either fall for it hard or you give up in the first hour or so.   With this game being the biggest reason I got an 360, I was pretty afraid I'd be sorely disappointed by it. But over a hundred hours, 4 characters and 1050 achievement points  later I think I can safely say this game blew me and my tiny little mind away.Since the story is detailed on the main ...

If one recalls my Assassin's Creed review, I spoke about a game not delivering on the promises it makes during development. In a way, this point relates to Mass Effect, a game that, despite the LOFTIEST of promises made during the games lengthy production, seems to have followed through with each and every one. However... this leaves the game feeling more than a bit... scatter shot in some key areas. The story is, for all intents and purposes, the highest point of the game here. In fact, this mi...

Excellent RPG, marred only by technical issues 0

Mass Effect has nearly everything you would want in a RPG; a great story, realistic characters, relatively deep customization, and a universe worth spending time in.  Bioware nearly stuck everything.  Where Mass Effect slips up is on the technical side of things.  The frame rate and load times detract from the experience.  Remove the technical miscues and you would surely have a five star role-playing game. After just playing through the Bringing Down the Sky DLC, you wish Bioware would have cut ...

The universe (or rather the galaxy) created here is immersive and interesting, ensuring that anyone taking a trip into BioWare's space epic is sure to return. This game was one of the most hyped and anticipated games of 2007, it was promoted as a game where a wide open setting and an emotional roller coaster of a story were the main driving force . It came damn close to accomplishing both. From the moment you start the game you will be in awe of the graphics and the amount of interaction that takes place. Fair. What's a fair score for a game that is rich with story and character development with breathtaking visuals to boot but fails in technical performance and repetitive environments? A game that leaves you speechless by the end but trying to drive around to complete missions and actually get to the end is a frustrating chore? An incredible story that compensates for some buggy game play. 0

Mass Effect is a third person RPG developed by Bioware. The best way to sum up Mass Effect is it's a space soap opera. The only thing separating Mass Effect from an actual soap opera is how compelling the story is. Most people can't sit threw an entire soap opera without losing their lunch. Mass Effect on the other hand keeps you playing for about 40 hours by drawing you in with its gameplay and then making you stay to see how the story finishes. In Mass Effect you play commander Shepard. Mass Effect's storyline is actually very well thought out. A driving storyline and plot makes for a very user-involved experience, and each choice in the game affects how the game plays. Different choices lead to different responses from different characters, and there's a multitude of choices to be made throughout the game, making it very replayable. I can't really say much more about the game's story, because it's so rich and full. Suffice to say, it's a great variation on the ages-old tales o...
