After Midway filed for bankruptcy on the 12th of February 2009 the future of this game was in question. But the Mortal Kombat property and the Chicago development studio where it was created have been purchased by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Midway's Chicago studio has since been renamed to WB Games Chicago, and development on Mortal Kombat 9 continues. It is expected to be shown at E3 2010.
Early rumors report that the game is returning to its 2D roots by taking place on a single plane while still using polygonal characters and backgrounds, presumably based on the enhanced Unreal Engine 3 technology that was used in MKvDC. As the game has yet to be officially announced beyond a couple of loose references, platforms for release are unknown at this time. However, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 seem like likely targets.
It is currently unknown whether Mortal Kombat 9 will continue the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe storyline or return to the series' roots, merely that it is under development.
