Most of us agree (those of us that own a DS) that it was a pretty fine year for DS releases.  With that in mind, looking back at the releases for the 2009, which ones did you get around to purchasing?  Which were the really good ones?  Which ones disappointed?

To help in this endeavour, I have listed the reasonable scored releases of the year in Metacritic score order:

Henry Hatsworth is my GOTY for the DS. That game came out of absolutely nowhere, and blew me away. The platforming's solid, the puzzle aspect is awesome, the presentation- soundtrack, graphics, etc is amazing, and the story/dialogue (especially that nonsensical voice acting) is amazing. I honestly think it's a much better (and more challenging) DS platformer than the beast that is New Super Mario Bros.

Art Style: PictoBits is awesome as well, as is the Bomberman downloadable game for DSiware. Both are must owns if you get a DSi.

The DS games I picked up this year were: GTA: Chinatown Wars, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: March of the Minis, Rhythm Heaven and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box.  Of those 5, I'll have to go with Bowser's Inside Story as my favorite.  A fantastic game and one of my favs of the year, as well.

I only messed around with Scribblenauts and GTA:CW. Didn't purchase either for DS.

GTA:CW is better on PSP for the type of game. Sure the touch screen events were kinda neat, but proven to be totally replicable with buttons.

I really need to get the Bomberman game, it looks pretty good. Does it have single cart play? I already have the WiiWare game Bomberman Blast, which is fucking awesome, but I'll be playing 10 man Bomberman this Christmas Day on my Sega Saturn ^^

I could've sworn that we've talked about this before Linkyshrinks, but yeah unfortunately no single cart multiplayer. It plays exactly like that Bomberman for Wii, sans a few extra modes, but it's portable (and online of course). I say, definitely get it if you're interested.

I must not have seen your reply, if that is the case, I do have that PM feature switched off. That's a shame, I would have liked to played against my girlfriend without having to but another DSi.

    Thanks.

The games I picked up this year:

    1.  Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars  Just can't get into it.  I am not a fan of GTA though.  Also,it came free with the DSi.
    2. Flipnote Studio         It is a free download, so why not?  I haven't really given it time, but I have viewed some other people's work.  Looks sweet.
    3. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride        I really love the whole DQ series, so this was a no brainer.  Wonderful game.
    4. Rhythm Heaven     Awesome game and a must if you like rhythm games.  Pity I am so crap at it.
    5. Pokemon Platinum        I am never disappointed with the main series of Pokemon and this is no exception.  Loved it enough to clock in at over 200 hours.
    6. Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!      I had 1000 points with the DSi, so I got this.  Looks and plays a treat and worth the points.
    7. Bird & Beans      More use of my 1000 points.  Got bored pretty quick to be honest.
    8. Blue Dragon Plus  It is put away for Christmas, so I can't judge it yet.

As is normal with me though, I will get a lot of these games the year after release, especially must have titles for me like:
    1.  Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, The Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes
    2. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
    3.  Dawn of Discovery
    4. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
    5.  Phantasy Star Zero
    6. Suikoden Tierkreis
    7.  Knights in the Nightmare
    8. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
    9.  Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero
    10. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time
    11.  Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
    12. Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier
    13.  Nostalgia
    14. Avalon Code
    15.  Atelier Annie Alchemists of Sera Island
    16. Dark Spire, The
    17.  Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road, The
    18. Legacy of Ys: Books I & II
    19.  Hero's Saga Laevatein Tactics
Based on my previous buying habits, you can bank on me getting most of these over the next 12 months.  All my JRPG in one wonderful place  ^_^

The only DS games I got that came out this year were Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Pokemon Platinum, and Dragon Quest V.  I'm asking for Zelda: ST and some Nintendo Points for some DSiWare games so that will be more 09 games I have gotten.  For my favorite 09 DS would have to be Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.

I got Bowser's Inside Story for  christmas and so far it's a really solid game. It's a lot of fun and challenging without being overly frustrating.

Pokemon Platinum, Professor Layton & Pandora's Box, Quantum of Solace.

The third of those is terrible. I haven't touched Pandora's Box yet, my sister's been playing it most of the time and I've had enough other games on my plate. So I suppose Pokemon Platinum,  even if it was only a minor expansion I used mainly for downloadable Pokemon like Darkrai and Shaymin.

I got Chinatown Wars, Chrono Trigger, Devil Survivor, Spirit Tracks and Henry Hatsworth. I only finished Spirit Tracks, but my favourite is probably Chrono Trigger, which I have yet to finish after I stopped playing it about 7 months ago.

I picked up Henry Hatsworth, Chrono Trigger and Bowser's Inside Story. I haven't finished BIS, but I think it's safe to say this will be my favorite game of the year on the DS. There are many others I'd still like to pick-up, though.

2009 DS releases I bought included:

    • Fire Emblem:  Shadow Dragon
    • Tokyo Beat Down
    • Shin Megami Tensei:  Devil Survivor
    • Kingdom Hearts:  358/2 Days
    • Dragon Quest V:  Hand of the Heavenly Bride
    • Dr. Mario Express
    • Flipnote Studio
    • Art Stye:  AQUIA
    • WarioWare:  Snapped!
    • The Dark Spire
    • Mario vs. Donkey Kong:  Minis March Again!

Of these games, Kingdom Hearts is my favorite, though Fire Emblem is close behind, and I'm currently in the midst of playing it again.  Devil Survivor, Tokyo Beat Down, Dragon Quest V, and The Dark Spire were all welcome additions to my collection as well.  Dr. Mario Express earns my vote as the best way to keep me entertained while traveling.

Bought Devil Survivor, Suikoden Teirkreis, and Valkyrie Profile.  All three are pretty decent, but the stand-out is definitely Devil Survivor.

Why do handhelds get a pass and consoles get the shit? The Nintendo version of the handheld genre gets great games... often. The Wii, not so much, and it pisses me off. The DS has had two, count them, two cell shaded Zelda's. The Wii, a great port from the Gamecube, but where's more Zelda on the Wii. It's coming, but damn... I saw so much more.

I received Rhythm Heaven for Christmas. It's alright, I haven't really warmed up to it yet. Hopefully it clicks at some point.

I had the same dilemma with Professor Layton earlier this year and that went nowhere. I have more hope for RH though.

I agree Claude.  So many times I see a DS title and think that it would be so much better still if it was a fully realised Wii game, especially in the area of RPG.

Chinatown Wars, Pokemon Platinum, Echoes of Time and Scribblenauts.

Chinatown Wars was a really great experience, it had a similar appearence to the original games, but the same style and feel as GTA IV.  Story was a bit ropey but the gameplay mechanics and city more than made up for that.  Shame it didn't do too well, because I feel it was a much better game than the PSP "stories" games that are likely to continue in its place.

Not much to say about Platinum, standard Pokemon game really.  I feel its the best in the series since Gold and Silver, the map is massive and the new Pokemon designs were all pretty great.  But Platinum itself was just a slightly modified version of Diamond and Pearl, and I'm getting pretty tired of these third versions that add next to nothing, except more battle options where the A.I. cheats and baltently abuses the broken stat mechanics.

Echoes of Time, again had a an awful storyline, but it's a great Diablo style loot grinding game.  Playing with others is a lot of fun and there's a good selection of weapons, armour and stats enchancers.  Really fun to get into every so often, but the difficulty doesn't increase enough.   Jumping from Normal to Hard has almost no changes, where as in similar games, like Phantasy Star Online, the difficulty jump rendered most of your current equipment instantly obsolete and the game became far harder.

I'm sure everyone can guess what I have to say about Scribblenauts.  Fun mechanics.. but awful control and poor mission design.  Could not play very far into the game at all.

I dont remember. I know I got Scribblenauts and never played it. I also bought Professor Layton. The only other DS game I remember buying was Chrono Trigger DS was that 09? I am too lazy to look for it on the list. I don't give my DS much love. I would like to get Mario and Luigi Bowsers Inside Story though. I still will probably get that.

I'm playing Might and Magic like every other responsible DS owner and I can say without a doubt that it is the most addicting thing i've played.
