I originally didn't want a playstation 3, but ever since MGS4 came out, I have been thinking more about buying one and future titles like InFamous, God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 are making me more inclined to get one. but i am worried that if i buy one i will only have it a year before talk of the next playstation comes around. Do you think the console still has enough time left for me to get one now? or should i just wait for the Playstation 4

There is no chance of the Playstation 4 coming out anytime soon, this is a great time to get one (well, maybe wait a week or two, there is supposedly a price drop to be announced soon).

It's too late; Sony's pretty much going to pull the plug on PS3 and go back to supporting the PS2 in hopes that the cheaper console will be able to reaffirm their dominance over the Wii.  Sorry man, but you missed out.

I think the PS3 will have a few more years of support.  I'm only speculating, but the hardware is powerful enough to not see an upgrade until maybe 2012.  Right now, there are many games out for it that I'd highly recommend, and the games that you mentioned are definitely more reasons to pick one up.  If you have the dough now, go for it.  Otherwise, you may want to hold off until post-E3.  My guess is, if SOny's going to do a price cut, it'll be announced then.

EDIT - Also, don't underestimate the Blu-Ray player capabilities.  Even if you have a standard TV right now, it's well worth investing into one for future use.

Sony seems to be rolling with those 10 year cycles, so we are what... 2.5 years into the life cycle?  I think this console is going to be the main console for another 3-5 years at least.  Even without BC at this point it is worth it.  There are at least 10 games that are must buy exclusives, and PSN IMO has a whole lot more interesting games on it than Wiiware and XBL; aka Flower, Pixeljunk Monsters, Echochrome, Linger in Shadows and last buy not least Wipe0ut HD.  And I totally forgot about Nobi Nobi Boy!   And  I really really cannot wait for Fat Princess, Flock and Shadown Hunters

At launch, I would have said: wait for a few awesome exclusives to come out for it, and for PSN to mature a bit.

If you're interested in getting a PS3, Target is having a sale on the "Greatest Hits Bundle" now. It comes with an 80GB PS3, Motorstorm, and Resistence: Fall of Man, for $399. So basically you get two free games, one of which is pretty rad.

You won't hear about a Playstation 4 until at least 2012 I shouldn't doubt. Playstation 3 might even outlive its 10 year lifecycle, simply because it's so easy to keep updated, the space capacity is massive thanks to Blu-ray and interchangeable hard drives, the cell has lots of potential left, etc. etc.

I think we'll see Playstation 3 for a long, long time.

Its definitely not too late...don't even worry about a new console coming out anytime soon.

I was just like you and decided to not get a PS3. Then I said screw it and ended up getting one. Best purchase I have made in the past year or so

Far from being too late. It's a good time to get one. I probably won't get one until around Christmas time, though.

There are rumours of an upcoming price drop. You might want to wait for that.

As for the PS4, I can't see that arriving until 2013 at the soonest.

I'm reading through the thread here and can't help but think how awkward it is seeing 'PS4' being used. 

There is really no reason not to get a ps3.  It's just entering it's prime, both for the hard copies of games, and the PSN is really starting to kick into gear.

The PS4 won't be coming out until 2014 or 2015.  The Playstation 4 is going to be all downloaded content, without the use of discs.  They are waiting for the cost of internet services to drop off (aimed at America).

What are these 10 must have games someone mentioned? I'm considering buying a PS3 but the only games I really want for it are MGS4, Uncharted, maybe Little BigPlanet, and maybe Killzone 2. Plus not having backward compatibility sucks because I'd have to keep my PS2 around.

PS3 is just hitting its prime. Think about how long PS2 was out for... and how well it did.

With the reccession, my predicitions are Sony are going to stick with what makes them money AKA software and accesories.

I don't predict a PS4 for a while.

Sony has proven that they support their consoles for the long haul.  So the PS3 is not only just getting warmed up, but it's going to be around for a long time.  It's reliable and has plenty of power to tap into yet.

I'm gonna wait until E3 to hear if there is going to be a price cut. I'm still going to buy one regardless, but if I got one now and then they cut the price at E3 I'd feel like one big Chump
