Blog About Blogs: Why You All Should Fix Your Blogs

No one ever reads them. If they see anything greater than a paragraph, they don't read them. They have no reason to. So many people post shitty blogs that it's just plain stupid to waste their time on what is very likely a complete piece of shit; a piece of shit that will not only waste their time, but make them a little dumber than they were before they gave into boredom and actually started reading.

Now, I'm not saying they don't read anything. Of course they do. They skim the first sentence, the second sentence, maybe the next paragraph's first sentence, maybe the very last few words, or maybe they just read the whole post up and down and see if they spot any clever phrases or interesting terms. What they definitely don't do, though, is sit there and read--word-after-word--the entire post.

But what about the good posts? What about the users that we know to be funny or prone to writing interesting articles? Why do we usually not read those, either? Because this is a video game site, for one. We have the worst attention spans of every single demographic, excepting 4 year-olds and speed freaks. We come here for a couple new videos, some game news, and to see flashy pictures of the upcoming games that make us moisten our seats. We need quick clumps of interesting data that we can consume and satisfy our lust with. We don't want to see anything that isn't a short list of annotated pictures or newly-released game footage with a half-paragraph of text next to it.

So at this point, you've established a hate for me--I get that--and you're likely wondering what my answer to this dilemma is, if I'm so clever and all-knowing. What the hell could my amazing solution be that you should all take heed of? Well, it's simple. Your paragraphs need to have content, they need to be at least mostly grammatically correct, and they need pictures: nice lively pictures, all over the fucking place.

Well, that last one isn't necessary, but it will usually help out a ton. There's actually one more, and it's both the most important and the easiest to implement. Something that's only reason for not being a mainstay on this site I can only guess boils down to the community's all-too-apparent fear of taking even a small staple from sites like 4chan: make a tl;dr (too long; didn't read). You can use mine for an example.

And, a disclaimer: I'm sorry if this sounded offensive, and that wasn't the point. I love the Giant Bomb, and I love the community. I only wish to piece together some advice for those of you who write wonderful blogs, but don't get the attention you deserve. It's very possible that I'm talking to myself here, being the light blogger that I am, but it sure would be wonderful if the right people took heed of this slightly satirical advice.

tl;dr: You guys aren't too great at getting people to read your blogs. Use tl;drs more often. Try harder.

What's a tl;dr? I mean, I know how people use the phrase, but I don't understand what implementation you're talking about.

Also, the reasons you listed is exactly why I don't blog. Nobody gives a shit about what I write anyways, so I'm not going to write it.

@example1013: Yeah. It's like ripping a fart during a concert. Such a waste.

and a tl;dr is what you put at the bottom of a long string of words to summarize what your post is about. Yes, sometimes the title may do that just fine, but it's still a great idea to put a 2-line tl;dr for the people that need more incentive to read on.

I'm assuming that your blog was advice on how to write better, more interesting blogs that keep people engaged, but I just stared the dinosaur for about a minute before my attention span expired and I felt completely satisfied. So here's some advice for you instead. Never start a show with a show stopper.

Best of luck! :D

I don't even know what tl;dr means. I've seen it a lot lately but I'm completely clueless as to what it actually means.

Also, that picture of the dinosaur is pretty sick.

Sick dinosaur picture.

As someone who writes blogs, I thought I should read your post here. I personally don't really believe in TLDRs. If someone doesn't want to read what you have to say, then they can have a nice day. If your goal is to get someone to read what you wrote, then why provide them with a two sentence summary that's only there as a means to avoid the rest of the text? I just think that defeats the purpose of a blog. However, speaking for my own blogs, I don't necessarily write them for others to read. I mean, sure, it's nice when people do read them, but I think I mostly do it for myself. I like reflecting on things a bit and rambling. I know that my rambling likely makes the whole blog less exciting, but I do it anyhow.

The picture tip is a good one though. Again bringing it back to my own blogs, I've recently gone away from the standard insert picture on the left or right thing. Instead I've been including banners for individual sections that splits the text up a bit. It basically accomplishes the same goal. I've actually made new (way cooler looking) banners that will go in the blog I post later today.

Interesting perspective, though.

@JJWeatherman: I had the same view on TLDRs as you for a long time, for all the same reasons. I was kind of awoken by the fact that every time I saw a post somewhere that was really long, but had a TLDR at the bottom, I'd almost always go back up and read the full thing, even if it wasn't the most interesting thing in the world. TLDRs are also a nice means of giving the reader another shot at understanding what exactly the point of your post is, to both remind the reader and to clarify things.

I feel the reason so many Giant Bombers don't use TLDRs is because they think they're amateur game commentators, not "just another person."

I don't think that's your reasoning, though. I completely understand blogging because you just really feel like getting stuff out. That's the whole reason I made this blog. I said "I feel like blogging about something," and then this popped out. Also, I like your blogs. There's a reason you have so many followers.

@FunExplosions: I suppose certain people may respond that way to TLDRs, going back to read the whole post. Generally though, your point should be made near the beginning or the end of your post; likely both places. And I think what you said about skimming the beginning and end is probably fairly accurate. TLDRs aren't the worst thing in the world, but I think not including it and just making your point early and late keeps things cleaner.

Same for the disclaimer stuff. The way I see it, that stuff shouldn't need to be labeled. It should all come through naturally as part of your post.

In the end it all comes down to a style thing I think. If you want to be as explicit about everything as possible and let everyone know exactly what's up, then TLDRs and disclaimer sections are fine. They're clear and easy to find. I personally just like a bit more subtlety I suppose.

Also, I like your blogs.

I've yet to write a single blog on this site. I'm still waiting for something interesting or clever enough to pop into my head.

You're damn strait!  =P

And if you want to write a blog, just do it about anything gaming related. Get a new game? Have an opinion on it? Write a blog! Of course then there's the non-gaming related blogs. Always an option, but for the love of god don't write one about "a girl that you met the other day" and then post it to the forums.

I don't think you quite get the point of why many people write blogs -- it's because the writing, itself, is enjoyable. Having people read it and provide input is icing on the cake. Sure, we'd all love to have a bajillion followers who all read our massive walls of text, but that ain't gonna happen on a place like GB, though we do have a great group of people who do take the time to read things especially once you establish a bit of a rapport with them.  I'm happy when I get one insightful reply to a blog that makes me look at my topic from a new perspective or provides a good counter-point. More often than not, I receive more than one such reply and that makes my day. Even the replies from trolls or people who clearly didn't RTFA are enjoyable, too.

My own bit of advice -- if you're going to make the whole "people like pictures so use a bunch!" argument (an argument I certainly won't contest, as I throw on as many images into my own blogs as I can, knowing people like to look at the purty pictures) at least make them uniform in size or something. Your post was just godawful to read through and it's hard not to take you as a troll when it's such a chaotic mess even though your message seems genuine enough.

Do tons of people read my blog? The hell would I know.
All I know, is that most of the time I have people replying to me, and we have conversation about what I have just written. Unless everyone online here is a figment of my imagination, which is a concept I have not ruled out yet, I'm interpreting what transpires as...Someone reading my stuff and wanting to talk or comment about what I just wrote about...

If I had some magic barometer that was able to figure out the percentage of people who read my blogs, I don't really know if I would use it.
Sometimes, I don't even post my blogs onto the forums, yet I still have people commenting on them. Are there tons of people who comment on those, in comparison to those I advertise? Of Course not....That's not the point though.
I enjoy writing, even if I didn't have an "audience", I would probably be doing the same thing in my free-time...Except it would be creepy and be in a word-pad document on my desktop.
I also really enjoy reading other people's writings. Giantbomb has some of the best community blogs about gaming anywhere.

Wait, if your going to use a summary sentence so people don't have to read the body of the text... why not just write a couple summary sentences instead? And if you can't manage to read a handful of paragraphs then you have real problems, it's not like a blog post is a fucking thesis or something.

So, you're saying you should use TL;DR's as a method of conclusion - summarising the text in case what you actually wrote wasn't as clear as you'd have like it to be? That's fair enough, but I still like reading long text blogs - as long as they are on topics I'm interested in. Tis the reason I read pretty much all of ahoodedfigure's lengthy blogs on The Elder Scrolls series. I'll read anything which is well written and on a topic I care about, regardless of length, and I'd hate to see lengthier blogs die out because "they aren't getting enough views."

This is exactly how I feel.  The process of focusing your thoughts and opinions and then setting them down is entertaining.  Playing with words and coming up with new ways to describe an emotion is like a discovery in itself.  I have a habit to posting "walls of text" in my blogs over on Anime Vice, but it's not like this is a school paper with a minimal word count.  When I am excited about something I want to express my exuberance.  Sometimes I have a lot to say and so I indulge myself amply.  But, that is my right because I write for myself first and then for the minority who bother to click open a thread.  I'm not a professional, nor do I want to be; however I attain a strong sense of satisfaction in knowing that I wrote that.  An artist may go a lifetime without ever selling a painting but something drives them to set brush to canvas.  It's not always about the money or the accolades.  More often than not, it's the act of creation that's so invigorating.

I agree with the OP on the pictures, though.  Those are a must.

Quite a bit, actually. That's why I posted that link to my Doki Doki Panic blog.  Besides, yea, on average, it's 20-30 posts. However, I have gotten far more comments on some of my other blogs. I seem to remember one blog getting near 300 comments on it.

I would just like to say that I'm depressed that everyone assumed those pictures were supposed to be in any way relevant to what I was writing about. They are ridiculous, annoying, over-the-top, and ugly. That is the point.

@Wrighteous86    Schtick? But I am King of the Moon. Besides, the only time I think that would be close to accurate would be in my Dead Moon blog.

No one ever reads them. If they see anything greater than a paragraph, they don't read them. Now, I'm not saying they don't read anything. often. Try harder.

.....Yeaahhhhhh. I think you are misunderstanding people's motivation to write blogs here OP. Anyone that keeps doing it on regular basis is really, probably just doing it because he/she likes to write and/or wants to improve their ability at doing just that. Not gain E-PENIS points/views.

Kinda sad that people somewhere down the line lost the ability to read.

Big wall of text or a blog with little text and a few stolen pictures?

Vote goes for the wall of text.
I know, weird right, someone who can actually read.

Dear god, could you imagine a book set up like a blog that has been paragraphed to hell and back?
Fucking disgusting
