New Genres or Themes?

Hey everyone. Now that the site's been up and kicking for a few weeks here and many of you have gotten used to using it, I wanted to see what you thought about our list of genres and themes. Are we missing anything? If so, make a case for it in the comments section for this post and we'll take it under consideration. Thanks!

(Bonus points if anyone can come up with good, easy-to-understand terms for arcade-style shoot-'em-ups without using "'em-ups" or "shmups.")

GENRES:

1 - Action
4 - Adventure
34 - Baseball
22 - Basketball
26 - Billiards

2 - Strategy
25 - Tennis
36 - Text Adventure
14 - Trivia/Board Game
38 - Vehicular Combat
10 - Wrestling
41 genres

THEMES:

18 - Post-Apocalyptic
3 - Sci-Fi
10 - Steampunk
19 - Superhero
8 - Vietnam
7 - World War II
21 themes

[UPDATE]

Some notes:

Remember, the main purpose of organizing by genre is so you can click on that genre and get a list of games that qualify. Same for themes. Now, keeping that in mind, some notes...

- Added Western and Adult as themes.

- Breaking shooters out based on the way they scroll doesn't seem right. Breaking Bullet Hell shooters out from the calmer stuff also doesn't seem right to me. Breaking static-screen shooters out from scrolling ones also doesn't seem right. To me, the meaningful split is separating games like Contra from R-Type, not separating Space Invaders from Xevious.

- Games that you would want to tag as "Futuristic" typically fit into the Sci-Fi theme.

- Game attributes like Co-Op and Online will be covered by a separate game attributes section that will also cover fields like Supported HD Resolutions, Number of Players, ESRB Descriptors, and so on.

- Isn't Turn-Based Strategy covered by Strategy? It stands to reason that any game that isn't would probably be tagged as an RTS to begin with.

- I'd rather not get into the practice of "camera angle = genre" if at all possible. FPS seems like the only reasonable exception. "Third-Person Shooter" as a genre seems like a bad idea.

- "Sandbox" is too open of a term to qualify as a game's theme or genre. That should probably be a concept page... or is it just one of those weird marketing terms for something that comes automatically with an association to the "open-world" concept?

- Diablo-style "hack 'n' slash" games are already covered. Select both Action and RPG.

- What should we call games like Wing Commander and Blazing Angels? They're essentially the same, but is putting one in space and one in WWII enough to make them different genres? "Space Simulation" is the typical term for Wing Commander games, but I feel like we can do better than that.

- Due to our (my) rampant dislike of "beat-'em-up," we've gone with Brawler to cover those games.

- Using "Arcade" as a genre or modifier ("Arcade Sports" or "Arcade Racing") is an aging crutch that is becoming more and more meaningless as time goes on. We need a better way to say "not-sim" if we want to make that differentiation.

- "Stealth" and "Stealth Action" games are really just action games that contain stealth. Should probably be covered by a concept page.

- "Button Mashing" is a game mechanic, not a theme/genre.

Someone requested personally to me that there be an "Adult" theme, because of all those anime/hentai games out there. It's your call.

I was thinking maybe "Danmaku" should be added to the genre section, mainly because unlike normal shooters, it's more about weaving through complex bullets patterns, and also because the bullets aren't always fired at the player, but are spread out across the entire screen.

Western is necessary for themes, as is the Civil War.  Also, maybe you could call them spaceship shooters?  that word shooter wrecks everything, don't it

I think "Multiplayer" or "Multiplayer-focused" could be used as a theme for party games and online-oriented shooters, such as Shadowrun or Quake Wars.

Plenty of genres. Too many actually. No need for more unless there's actually a big hole.

Above commenter suggestions of Adult and Western themes both seconded.

I think we need Medieval (sp?) as a theme. For games like Lords of the realm, total war, and the like. I'd have thought there'd be more Medieval games than Mayan.. ?

Side-scrolling shooter? EDIT: Or how about 'top-down shooter' or '2D shooter'.
Also maybe a genre like 'user creation' or 'game 2.0' if you understand me, for games like LBP and blast factory that heavily promote you to make your own stuff.

Or like a samurai/ninja theme like 'eastern' or something, for things like tenchu, ninja gaiden and dynasty warriors, or maybe even as far to include okami - games with an obvious and heavy eastern influence.

On themes - and just because i've got final fantasy x on the brain - how about love, religion, or even just a generic 'war' theme for games that have clear large scale conflict between groups.

Also, space could be a theme.

I know that there's a separate genre for strategy and real time strategy, but turn-based strategy should probably be separate too. I just think that TBS games like Civilization, Heroes of Might and Magic, Master of Orion and such shouldn't be put in the same genre as the other strategy games.

Also, action-RPG could probably be it's own genre too. Games like Fallout, Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment really are too different from Fable, Mass Effect and Jade Empire to be put in the same genre.

I suggest adding graphic adventure (Monkey Island, Phoenix Wright) to the list of genres. I also wish there was a way to search for games from a certain genre or theme.

I would suggest Space Shooter, or possibly Top-down Shooter for genres.  Either is more descriptive than simply being a shooter.

Another genre I would added would be Hack-and-Slash, for games like Dynasty Warriors, Drakengard, Ninety-Nine Nights or really any game that involves taking down waves of enemies with melee weapons.

Mission-based genre: The Simpsons Road Rage and The Simpsons Hit & Run are not just driving racing games, there mission based too.

Sandbox genre is needed because games like GTA3 isn't adventure or shooter but there mission based and open world.

Turn-based Strategy would be another genre I'd recommend adding, just to go along with the Real-time Strategy genre already present.

Uhh...Turn-Based Strategy? For themes, we could add Eastern, because there can be games set in Japan or China that don't use an anime-esque style (Okami for example).

Maybe there are too many genres.

Sports can cover football and golf. No one is going to look at Tiger Woods 2009 and wonder what sport is in store for them. I think what people need to know is what kind of game it is, so NFL to Blitz for example, one is a sim the other is...... I don' know, insert word.

For shmups, I would make 3 genres: Horizontal Shooter, Vertical Shooter, and Bullet Hell (danmaku) Shooter. Actually, I can understand if you think bullet hell shooter is a bit redundant since most vertical shooters are bullet hell anyway, but vertical and horizontal should definitely be split as they differ greatly in gameplay.

I'd also like to see a genre specific for non-action adventures like Sam & Max. But not all of them are point 'n click games, so I'm not sure what they should be called. "Non-Action Adventure" sounds a bit odd. Perhaps Classic Adventure, Puzzle Adventure or Pure Adventure?

As for themes:
Adult/Erotic (several people requested this on the forums)
Occult/Esoteric
School (for games like Persona and Bully)

Genres

Vertical Shooter (1942)
Horizontal Shooter (R-Type)
On-Rail Shooter (Rez, Panzer Dragoon, Space Harrier)
Turn-Based Strategy (Jagged Alliance, X-Com)
Tactical RPG (Disgaea, FF tactics, Phantom Brave)
Action RPG (Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud 2)
Olympic Games (Track & Field)
Third-Person Shooter (Gears of War, Syphon Filter)
Beat 'em up (Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, God Hand (I prefer this term over Brawler in any case))

I think they're genres in themselves but I may be wrong

Shooter's should just be ....

First-Person Shooter (Quake, Halo)
Third-Person Shooter (Gears of War, Lost Planet)
Horizontal Shooter (Gradius, R-Type)
Vertical Shooter (194X, Touhou)

It sounds like overkill, but that way there's really no confusion as to what you're getting. An "On-Rails Shooter" genre wouldn't hurt either.

Point and click adventure games. I don't know what that would go under, but games like Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle would go into this category.

I believe sports should be a theme rather than a genre, but that is just me nitpicking.

Welcome additions could also include "hunting" and "party" genres.
