On the Subject of Endurance...

I don't know that anyone out there thought that we would still be going strong on these Persona 4 Endurance Run videos after ten weeks. I don't really know if I'd ever considered doing them for this long when we first started doing them. I figured someone (you or us) would lose interest, or perhaps we'd ruffle some feathers over at Atlus and they'd politely ask us to stop broadcasting their game start to finish. I reckon that our pacing is such that anyone who wants to play the game will certainly have plenty of time to do so before we start spoiling things about it.

But here we are, 50 days later, still going. I get the impression that there's a decent number of people out there who picked up Persona 4 after seeing us play, people who wouldn't have given the game a first look, let alone a second look, under normal circumstances. I've always felt that one of the main things people in my line of work are supposed to do is connect people with the right games, especially when those games might otherwise go unnoticed. While that isn't quite what our aim was when we kicked this off, that's really where it's ended up. With the way the game's progressing, I feel that I really can't recommend it enough.

Though we haven't finished the game (yet), I feel like I can safely say that Persona 4 is one of the best RPGs I've ever "played." Of course, I haven't seriously played a console-only RPG in ages... mostly because they're so boring and so predictable. That's probably my favorite thing about Persona 4. Every time you think it's heading one way, they go in a slightly different direction, or at least get to the point in an unexpected way. And I've been totally impressed with the dialogue. The characters seem to call each other out more than I'd expect. More than once I've started getting exasperated at a dumb line of dialogue only to have the in-game response call it out, too. It's well-written and localized in a way that retains the Japanese feel without feeling overtly "foreign." That's a tough balancing act.

It's kind of funny to see the reaction to the videos. I've been doing a little googling to see what people are saying elsewhere. It's funny to stumble upon some serious-style RPG forum and see people complain about how we're "the worst Persona players ever" or something. I think they're sort of missing the point, and that's part of why RPGs have fallen out of the mainstream. The genre has become more and more impenetrable over the years, to the point where picking up the average Japanese RPG now is nearly impossible for the average player. The games have been built upon one-another to the point where if you haven't been paying attention all along, you're going to have a tough time getting in.

There are a lot of things that Persona 4 does well, but I feel like it leaves too many of its systems unexplained... or at least poorly explained. Things like the way fused persona randomly inherit skills, or the actual importance of Social Links... the game just sort of mentions that stuff in ways that make them seem totally optional, but stuff like that ends up being pretty core to the experience. So when we're fumbling through parts of the game, it's because we're not sitting there with a FAQ, figuring out the exact best way to spend every day... and it's because we're spacing out our play time in such a way that we rarely remember anything for very long.

Anyway, my thoughts will become a bit clearer on the subject as we keep playing, but with a UI overhaul, some pacing adjustments, and more in-game descriptions of core systems, there's no reason Persona 4 couldn't appeal to a larger crowd of players. Of course, at that point you have to start worrying if those changes would alienate the game's existing fanbase. The RPG dudes seem pretty set in their ways.

On top of all that, Persona 4 is currently the most popular game page on the entire site. That's pretty cool.

you're right. ive watched the first 10 episodes alone, and apart from the MGS-esque epicly long story, this one actually makes some sense.

I completely agree on the subject that everyone is taken RPGs, really seriously. On which the average gamer won't be able or will be difficult to finish. But I don't think you guys are the "worst players" out there. There are many people out there whom died many times at a boss(specifically Shadow Yukiko) and you guys were able to beat them on your first try. There are lots of indepth detail in this game that you can't be able to know anything in one playthrough. Heck, even experts forget elements in this game as well as die in boss encounters.

Please continue on rocking those Endurance Runs.

Whoa. The best RPG you've ever played (seen)?

DYAAAAAMN!

But seriously, I hope you guys continue your journey toward intimacy. I love these Endurance Run episodes, for they make my life feel a whole lot better for some reason. Not only do I not have to play the game, but I have two awesome dudes playing it for me. It's the greatest, most genius idea ever.

But to be a little original, I sort of felt bad for you and Vinny. I really thought both of you hated this game and wanted to stop playing it, but you only continued to not make your users mad. Now that you mentioned that you love this game, I now feel a whole lot different then before. But still, if both of you are getting sick of the game and want to move on to something else, feel free to stop. I won't whine like a little anime protagonist on life support that's run on helium. You guys are awesome and don't deserve to suffer in anyway.

To be fair, they beat Shadow Yukiko after reading tips and bringing Senri. If they'd gone in blind, like most who die do, then they would've suffered the same fate. And they were a little lucky in the end.

They aren't truly the worst players ever to touch P4. They're just complete novices when it comes to SMT, and the SMT games are never easy to master. You can imagine how fun it was learning what skills did back in the older games, where you can't press square and see what each skill does. I found P3 dauntng when I started it, almost scary in fact, and I felt the same way when I started P4.

But really, P4 is the most easy SMT related game Atlus have released. Once the early dungeons are out of the way it's a stroll to the end. The only tough thing about it is learning how everything works, which basically comes down to having the right persona equiped when social linking and keeping a varied set of skills on your personas. Rocket science it ain't.

I wouldn't class either P3 or P4 as the best I've played. Atlus were cheap when creating the games, keeping the backgrounds and graphical details unimpressive and failing to create great stories. In both games the story drags on until the end, where everything happens at once and the player sees how poor the stoy is without the mystery element. I like a great story to playthrough, so the Persona games fail just for their stories in my book. If you want the best PS2 RPG, look no further than Suikoden V - 100 hours of gameplay and one of the best video game stories ever.

I think they are improving everytime. Just look at when they defeated Shadow Kanji. I didn't see any comments about not using physical attacks on the tough guy. But they learned without any help, beating the Nice guy first and then Shadow Kanji himself.

Well, Atlus is a small company not like SquareEnix or others. I don't think P4 have a terrible story, its really intriguing to the end. The Persona series is quite unique that is somewhat realistic (signs of Japanese culture) to fictitious and having supernatural occurrences. Also, those FMV anime sequences looks better than any anime sequences out there.

Haven't you seen the True Ending? It's the proper send-off to this game.

Persona 4 is fuckin' righteous and that's coming from a guy who doesn't touch JRPG's. I credit the GB and the Endurance Run for my new found interest. Thank you!

And please start using multiple save slots so you don't have to struggle fixing corrupt video files. =)

I gotta thank you guys for doing this, because this is probably the best RPG I've ever played (which is amazing for me to say since I rarely like them). After watching a few hours worth of the endurance run I decided I should really try it out for myself, and I really had a great time with it. I never would have picked up this game if it weren't for these videos, so I thank you again for shining a light on this little gem.

I am very grateful that you guys are doing the endurance runs. At first they spurred me on to get further in the game and keep up, in the end I've gone way ahead but I still watch just because they're very entertaining videos due to your chemistry and funny patois. Also, because I want to see your reactions to the crazyness yet to come.

On the subject of good rpgs. I was an rpg fan for a long time then became completely sick of them around the time of Digital Devil Saga. Persona 3 and Final Fantasy 12 pulled me back in due to the non manditory random battles and the overall freshness and variety. Persona 3 in particular struck me withits characterisation and now Persona 4 is even better in that regard. When you guys can bring up Teddy and Nanako in random podcast conversation, you know the writers and translators have done a good job :)

Aion, I don't know why you still watch these videos. They said they were new to the game, you shouldn't be watching to see the game being run through quickly in a professional manner, in fact what would the fun of that be? It's obviously no fun to you because I've often seen you just shout and be rude. Watching this is purely to wwatch two people enjoying a great game.

Not only has the endurance run encouraged me to buy the game, but it's encouraged me to play through the first 5 hours twice, and that's after watching you guys play those hours too. You see, I was lacking a memory card, so I figured I'd just leave the PS2 on until I got a hold of one...then I died. There are plenty of games I would have just given up on at that point, but knowing of the wonders that are wrestling with Chie, and hanging out with the Mysterious Fox, I had to persevere.
Basically, you ought to be sponsored by Atlus for this.

I'm probably going to buy the game thanks to the Endurance run, though I stopped watching them after 20 or so episodes so as not to spoil the entire thing for myself. But I think it's totally awesome that you guys are doing this and it made me laugh a whole bunch of times!

I'm so glad (and pleasantly surprised) that you guys have managed to take the endurance run as far as you have. Even having played the game before, it's so much fun watching you guys play it and listening to your commentary and reactions. Heck, having played through it already brings a bit of nostalgia with it as I get to relive my own memories that I had while playing the game. Thank you for that!

I can certainly understand the sentiment of Japanese RPGs being hard for the average player to be able to dive into without having played plenty of previous ones. There are plenty out there that throw you in the pool and expect you to sink or swim and a fan-base that stands at the edge of the water, smirking. That said, there still are those that do a great job of being player-friendly (eg. Tales of Vesperia). I also find it hard to fault the more elitist RPG fans, as RPG enthusiasts have always been the "outcasts", even in gaming circles, so many tend to get on the defensive very easily.

For someone jumping into the Persona-fusing system for the first time, 4 definitely leaves a few things unexplained. My guess is that they're assuming most had an understanding from having played 3, though that's really not a good excuse.

Thanks again for all of the hard work you guys put into the endurance run (and the site!) and it's great to hear you're actually enjoying the game!

I had the same deal - or even more so - playing persona 3: FES, as it doesn't tend to explain things very well or at all, or it at least never addresses things too clearly and is all mysterious about it. I still haven't finished it yet but it's picking up story wise and it's cool, but i have to admit persona 4 seems much more intriguing with some of the subject matter it touches upon and the way it balances between the humour and seriousness. So i'm totally gonna pick it up after i'm done with p3.

I do find big franchises like final fantasy to be quite simple, or at least easy to get into and understand, but that's coming from a background where i'm already up to date playing each game in series. It also doesn't have time restrictions or anything, but i guess that's what is quite interesting about persona. You don't have the chance to spend ages completing everything before moving on, and it forces you to think and choose as you won't be able to do everything you might want. It keeps the pace up.

Keep on at it anyway jeff. Good luck with the rest of the game.

When I actually have money, I'm gonna go pick this game up, and i'm typically the type of person who only goes for the Final Fantasies and the Star Oceans. Those videos TOTALLY sold me on the persona series. I actually stopped watching them around ep: 26 because I want to save some of the crazy for myself :D

Take it from someone who's been playing RPGs for a long time: there's nothing wrong with the way you guys are playing. Ignore all the hardcore people who think that their playing style is the best; their method of playing and their way of forcing it onto others is what makes other people believe that the genre is innacessible to newcomers in the first place. There's no set way to play an RPG, all you need to do is play the way you think it should be played. If you die, then all that happens is that you'll fight whatever killed you, but this time you'll know how it went wrong last time and how to prevent it from happening again.

Keep up the great work, guys. It's great to see you react the exact same way I did to most of the events in the game, and pretty much everyone that watches would love to see you guys make it through to the end.

P.S: Forget London, come up to Scotland for a while.

I would have to agree that P4 is certainly one of the more interesting JRPGs out there.
I pretty much have given up on the genre. They have not evolved very much in terms of gameplay or plot since the Final Fantasy SNES games. Most JRPG plots can be boiled down to:
A: Evil empire trying to take over and/or destroy the world.
B: Its up to a rag tag team of rebels to stop it.
C: The main character may have amnesia which leads to a "mind blowing" plot twist.
So far the story has not fallen on those hallmark cliches.
What I like about P4 is that the story is so small scale. It's a murder mystery set in a small town. Not some epic, globetrotting, fight for humanity.
Plus as Jeff pointed out. The characters and dialog have personality. And its great to see how Vinny and Jeff react to them.

Anyways keep it up. This has been a great series. It reminds me a lot of that Game Center CX show in a way. Which is awesome.

Have you guys considered interviewing Atlus about the game? Perhaps talking to some of the localization team. They usally have some interesting things to say about the games they work on.

I had no idea about any of the Persona games before you guys started the Endurance Run. I'm not that into RPGs, so maybe that's why. But watching this really makes me want to play it. I think this is the case for a lot of people, and this is the reason I think Atlus won't ask you to stop playing, it got tons of people interested in the game.

Great job on the Endurance Run guys!

Everytime there´s a good P4 episode I have to keep telling myself NOT to buy it. I don´t have the time nor the endurance to play it through but damn, I´ve been close to picking it up at least 10 times during these 50 episodes now. But everytime I tell myself to NOT pick it up I also know that you guys are fetting further and further along in the story so I know that if I ever want to pick it up I need to do it sooner rather than later. It feels like the 50 first episodes was a good introduction to both the mechanics and the story so really...the time is now.. If I´m gonna pick it up I need to do so now...sigh..here I go again..

Well Jeff, I hope that when you are done with the current epic Endurance Run, that you maybe in the future you make a new ER, of some of the sleepers in gaming.. like Psychonauts.. I think this is a great way to get people interrested in games, that they normally wouldn't touch.. especially since some games just get killed by bad marketing and timing.

The true ending of P4 tied up some things from the start but, in all honesty, wasn't needed. If the boss of the 7th dungeon was replaced with the boss of the 8th dungeon then there wasn't any need for an 8th dungeon. And, some more dialogue aside, the good and true ending scenes are the same. It really felt like I was in the bonus game area once I'd beat the 7th dungeon.

And, to all the people who say Vinny never did anything wrong, are you blind? At one point he didn't fuse, didn't use debuffs, only had the right persona equiped at random, struggled with basic PS2 camera movement (and still does) and forgot his own name more than once. I agree he's gotten better now - he's fusing and using buffs/debuffs - but at once point he was truly painful to watch. Now that he's doing more things right, such as going to Aiya on rainy days, it's much more enjoyable watching him do his thing.

I'm not trying to be an arse but doing stupid things and finding the game complex because neither Vinny or Jeff looked at the detailed manual has nothing to do with how hard or easy the game is, or how difficult the game can be for non-JRPG fans. People were cutting them too much slack just because they're cool guys.

Anyway... I would love to see you guys cover more old JRPGs; the ones with funny dialogue. There are some scenes in Grandia (PS1) that are truly laugh out loud funny and would be great with the comments of you guys. Since RPGs are the longest games and contain the most text, it'd kinda suck if you did a FPS endurane run or the like after P4 is over.

Well like coffeesash says. Why are you still watching these videos if you think they suck at this game? If they would of done this in a professional manner then it would be really boring and a lack of commentary. Also  why do you suggested another RPG for them to play? Obviously you just said that they sucked at this game. If they started another RPG then, you will probably have the same type of behaviour as this Endurance Run.

You lack basic reading ability: I said they were awful before they started doing things correctly. They're better now. And the story sections were always funny, no matter how bad or good Vinny played.

And, if you think I was being serious with my more recent video comments, you lack a sarcasm detector. Or you're a Halo playing American.

I wouldn't say that you guys were awful, but before you got over that learning curve, I had some serious doubts as to whether or not you'd be able to beat Shadow Yukiko before the deadline.  You guys did, though, and you've gotten quite a bit better understanding the game.  As someone that's already beaten the game and seen the true ending, I hope you're able to make it to the end because this game really is something special.

And while I am undoubtedly biased, I never really understood the idea that there's something inherently wrong with the JRPG genre.  Certainly, some games are much better than others, and a lot of games could benefit from better writing/pacing/structure/etc., but what other genres don't have a number of games with similar issues?  I'm not a fan of the western form of RPGs (Oblivion, Fallout 3, etc.), but I don't decry them and demand the developers cave to my will like some internet trolls might.  I've just learned to accept the fact that the genre really isn't something I'm interested in and that the gameplay style is something I much prefer in a pen & paper RPG rather than a console or computer game.  The same could be said for my relationship with sports sims.  The general complexity and realism inherent to the genre is just not as appealing to me as the arcade feel of a game like Baseball Stars.

Oh, and when you get to the end of the next dungeon, I'd really recommend you and Vinny take a Persona immune to ice.  It'll help you guys a lot.

Please stop contradicting. You simply said that earlier about them sucking.

I kinda agree with Jeff that P4 (and P3 for that matter) are the best RPG's I've ever played. They don't have that drawn-out epic scale, and maybe not the best graphics engine or even combat...but they have a certain charm to them which makes them refreshing, especially to someone like me who usually doesn't play or enjoy JRPGs.

I'm actually one of those people that picked up and officially acknowledged the game AFTER you guys started playing it. Still, I wouldn't say you have to be a RPG junkie to enjoy this one. I felt kinda lost with the latest Square Enix titles, and I promised to myself that I'd never play any of their games ever again. Persona 4 on the other hand feels somewhat familiar, while still being the first Persona I've ever played.

That being said, I'm amazed as you guys are to see how popular this thing has become.

Ps: Ignore Aion. He's just an annoying troll that you don't want to feed.

I had never really thought about how impenetrable jrpgs are nowadays to new players. Granted, maybe that never ocurred to me because I have never stoped playing them. Still, I think you guys made a great choice when choosing Persona 4 for an "experiment" like this. It' definitely one of the best RPGs out there, and I don't believe there are many that would disagree.

Well said.  P3 was epic, and though I don't think I can have that big of an expectation for P4, I wouldn't be surprised if it were just as good or better.

I bought the game last year, but haven't played past about episode 10 in your endurance run.  I stopped watching it in hopes that I would play through the game on my own first and then go back and watch all the videos.  But I've finally caved and just started watching the videos anyways.  It's a little different experiencing the game through videos instead of playing it myself, but it's also just like sitting next to a friend while he's playing it.  And that's a different kind of fun.  Not you're own play through, but you can still enjoy a game a lot by watching someone else play it.  Isn't that what we all did when we were little and your brother or friend was playing an RPG?  Or a single player game?  I'm sure a lot of us have had this experience.  Currently on episode 15 and I'm going to try to catch up like 5 a day so I'm watching it every day as they come out.

I hope P4 is just the start of endurance runs for other games!!!  Especially if they are ones that I, personally, wouldn't normally play... then I would get even more out of them!  I think you're doing this for a lot of people since not many outside of serious JRPG players are into Persona.

I'd love for you to quote where I contradicted myself. I don't think you understand tenses and that when I said 'were' I was referring to the point in time before they started playing with some skill.

I hope English isn't your first language.

Edit: Also, I hope the other poster knows that telling someone to ignore me only helps draw attention onto myself. Not very smart.

IMO, this is a testament to just how popular the GB crew is. You guys are so hilarious, and you walk the line between being professional and showing just how human you are through all the fantastic features you've been making, such as Quick Looks. I would've never even heard about Persona 4, or cared for it, if it hadn't been for these videos. So thanks for that guys.

I love the endurance runs! I am one of those that never thought about even looking at the game, however, now I am really considering buying it...

Much like my good man Caddy there, I wouldn't have ever given the game (a console game) a second look. But hoping to find a PS2 bundle / deal to buy and play P4 on as it does look genuinely fun.

I assume you must be referring to some previous comment? Because Aion has not claimed in this topic that they suck at the game. Still, I wish everyone would be a lot more civil to each other.

Jeff,

I've been playing RPGs since I first got a SNES as a kid. Maybe I was a weird kid but RPGs were always my favorite genre. Hell, I played just about every RPG that came out between 1993-2001 from the definition of mainstream (Final Fantasy VII) to the more obscure gems (Xenogears).

Sometime after Final Fantasy X, though, I suddenly became very jaded and lost hope in the RPG, especially the JRPG, genre. It seemed like RPGs were on the decline, cookie-cutter games spawning more of the same, and a marked lack of originality pervading the genre. If it weren't for you and Vinny, the new Persona games would've slipped completely under my radar. The last RPG that I truly lost myself in was TES: Morrowind in 2003, and before that the aforementioned Final Fantasy X in 2001, so I just want to say thank you for re-igniting my passion for JRPGS, and restoring my faith in the genre.

I wasn't too impressed with FF XII, but hopefully S-E can recapture the magic with FF XIII, maybe a new Dragon Quest (not for handhelds) and, if dreams can come true, another Chrono sequel. Atlus has won my heart so in the meantime I'll be perusing their back catalogue, as well as expecting more greatness from them in the future.

I wholeheartedly agree that SMT: Persona 4 is one of the best RPGs ever made, and hope you enjoy every minute of your Persona experience.

I dont think i've seriously played a JRPG since i was a little buckaroo trying to struggle my way through Suikoden, and now i have it downloaded on my PS3, seeing you guys playing P4 really reminded me how enjoyable a JRPG can be. It also encouraged me to add Persona 4 to my Game-Q, so hopefully sometime after i'm done stinking up the joint in Killzone 2 Multi(and Street Fighter 4) , and after a few other games come out, i will grab it and play.  I always wanted to try P4, and seeing you guys play it really reminded me. I need to rent P3 also , so i can shoot myself in the head.

Not only did you get me into a game that I thought looked stupid until I watched the ER videos, I'm about to buy a PS2 just to get this game!

Jeff, I am glad you guys kept playing. It's been great so far, episode 50 the best out of the bunch, seriously. That whole Kanji camp thing was hilarious. I'd have certainly take some years to play this game, but after watching the run, I might cut that short and play it as soon as possible!

Good luck!
