On the Subject of Endurance...

I don't know that anyone out there thought that we would still be going strong on these Persona 4 Endurance Run videos after ten weeks. I don't really know if I'd ever considered doing them for this long when we first started doing them. I figured someone (you or us) would lose interest, or perhaps we'd ruffle some feathers over at Atlus and they'd politely ask us to stop broadcasting their game start to finish. I reckon that our pacing is such that anyone who wants to play the game will certainly have plenty of time to do so before we start spoiling things about it.

But here we are, 50 days later, still going. I get the impression that there's a decent number of people out there who picked up Persona 4 after seeing us play, people who wouldn't have given the game a first look, let alone a second look, under normal circumstances. I've always felt that one of the main things people in my line of work are supposed to do is connect people with the right games, especially when those games might otherwise go unnoticed. While that isn't quite what our aim was when we kicked this off, that's really where it's ended up. With the way the game's progressing, I feel that I really can't recommend it enough.

Though we haven't finished the game (yet), I feel like I can safely say that Persona 4 is one of the best RPGs I've ever "played." Of course, I haven't seriously played a console-only RPG in ages... mostly because they're so boring and so predictable. That's probably my favorite thing about Persona 4. Every time you think it's heading one way, they go in a slightly different direction, or at least get to the point in an unexpected way. And I've been totally impressed with the dialogue. The characters seem to call each other out more than I'd expect. More than once I've started getting exasperated at a dumb line of dialogue only to have the in-game response call it out, too. It's well-written and localized in a way that retains the Japanese feel without feeling overtly "foreign." That's a tough balancing act.

It's kind of funny to see the reaction to the videos. I've been doing a little googling to see what people are saying elsewhere. It's funny to stumble upon some serious-style RPG forum and see people complain about how we're "the worst Persona players ever" or something. I think they're sort of missing the point, and that's part of why RPGs have fallen out of the mainstream. The genre has become more and more impenetrable over the years, to the point where picking up the average Japanese RPG now is nearly impossible for the average player. The games have been built upon one-another to the point where if you haven't been paying attention all along, you're going to have a tough time getting in.

There are a lot of things that Persona 4 does well, but I feel like it leaves too many of its systems unexplained... or at least poorly explained. Things like the way fused persona randomly inherit skills, or the actual importance of Social Links... the game just sort of mentions that stuff in ways that make them seem totally optional, but stuff like that ends up being pretty core to the experience. So when we're fumbling through parts of the game, it's because we're not sitting there with a FAQ, figuring out the exact best way to spend every day... and it's because we're spacing out our play time in such a way that we rarely remember anything for very long.

Anyway, my thoughts will become a bit clearer on the subject as we keep playing, but with a UI overhaul, some pacing adjustments, and more in-game descriptions of core systems, there's no reason Persona 4 couldn't appeal to a larger crowd of players. Of course, at that point you have to start worrying if those changes would alienate the game's existing fanbase. The RPG dudes seem pretty set in their ways.

On top of all that, Persona 4 is currently the most popular game page on the entire site. That's pretty cool.

Can i be honest? i think the Endurance Run could potentially be the worst thing to happen to this site...it's getting out of hand.

Just finished the game and you're pretty much spot on with what the game does well and where it has some issues. It was probably the most enjoyable JRPG I've played start to finish now that I can look back on it and I'm very interested to see how (if?) the series evolves once it arrives on current gen hardware.

As for the endurance run, I'm amazed it's still going on myself, I didn't see this lasting past the drawn out intro sequence. With how popular it seems to be and how passionate people are about it you guys seem to have something of a hit on your hands. I also don't want it to ever be the main focus of the site but it's a hell of a feature that no one else is doing.

Considering the amount of time it must take up for you guys to record, produce and encode 30+ minutes of footage 5 times a week, I just hope you all don't get burnt out or feel obligated to provide daily entertainment for however long this lasts. Mutliple times during P3 and P4 I've had to walk away for a week or two to clear my head of it and break up the grind. It's just as addicting once you return, and I think a few breaks in the right spots would help keep things fresh in the long run.

Just a question--even though I'm sure you're not reading these comments, Jeff--have you guys heard anything from Atlus? Any kind of feedback whatsoever? Just interested to hear what they think.

Persona 4, even in these Endurance Runs. is a really shocking experience. Seeing on the super-weird-yet-oddly-personal story sections, and the way the weird dating sim elements offer a break from and a counter to the actual RPG battling system.....even as I just watch it, I can tell it's a remarkable product.
So, here's the tough question; If you went back in time, and played P4 back in 2008, do you think it would have gotten a GotY nomination? And which member of the P4 crew would be the best one to Party with?

The only thing that's bummed me out about Persona 4 is that I've had such a great time watching the Endurance Run that now I almost don't want to play the game because of the Endurance Run.  I don't want to just copy your guys' experience verbatim or feel like I'm trying to intentionally do what you guys didn't do.  That said, this Endurance Run has made me rediscover Persona 3 and I just picked up a copy of Fes for cheap so I can keep my unplayed copy of the original Persona 3 unplayed, so it's not all hat much of a loss!

I am one of the many who bought Persona 4 because of your Endurance Run, and I just couldnt put it down once I got it. It took me about 80 hours over maybe 3 weeks to get through it, and I really enjoyed the ride.

And still, I continue to enjoy the endurance run very much. Not only is your commentary hilarious, but it's just a thrill to see somebody who arent used to J-RPGs having so much fun with P4. The fact that you stumble now and then isnt a bad thing at all. Although I catch myself thinking "cooome ooon, go over there! To the right!" now and then, I think it would be much more dull if you sailed through the game.

I hope you continue the endurance run for as long as you have fun with it. And if thats until the very end of the game, that would be awesome.

Yeah, I definitely would not have noticed a game like P4 without Endurance Run.  It's too bad a handful of users always seem to be so critical of the way you and Vinny are playing.  Maybe you can get one of your underlings to filter out the spoilers and negative posts, haha.  Most advice is given with good intentions though, and I'm sure you and Vinny realize that as well.  Keep it up.  I'm always looking forward to the next episode.

This is what makes GB the best gaming staff. Reading this shows a real passion for video games, its not some "my boss made me write this" type of article. I bought a playstation 2 and persona 4 just from following the first 20 episodes. All of you guys out there show some support for the guys that do this for you 5 days out of the week and buy a shirt.

I love the Endurance Run and I think Atlus should be paying you for generating so much interest in their game. I know I'm interested.

Someone somewhere will pick up on this and pay you to feature an Endurance Run of their game...

I doubt they would accept money like that.  They'd probably just turn down the offer but consider the game anyways for their own reasons.  If anyone would actually make an offer like that.

am I the only one who thinks Persona 3s story and characters are much more epic?

I suppose the gameplay and pacing is better though...

It's fun seeing you guys go through the game after I've completed doing things I never did, never noticed. Sometimes I just yell at my computer screen at what you may do. Keep up the good work, I hope you fellas can get the true ending, although that can be pretty tricky(although not that many decisions influence it, you won't have to worry about that for a LONG time).

I picked this game up after watching you guys play the game so count me in as a direct sale because of the Endurance run.

The game is always throwing curve balls and it seems to me that you could play the game multiple times just trying to see all the different paths that you could take. So many times now I don't have enough Courage to say something mostly because I choose to increase my Knowledge in order to ace the mid terms. This only works because of the limited number of things that you can do in a given day. This adds impact to your choices and somehow makes them seem more real.

Some things could be more transparent but I also think that this game provides a sense of discovery that I have not seen in recent games. Stumbling on the diner that allows you to spend time to increase a stat and then discovering that you can increase three stats on rainy days is one that stands out. I will get my free big noodle bowl one day!

It also helps that the characters and social link interactions make you want to know what's happening next and that you actually feel like you have invested in those characters.  You see the main story evolve but each of those social links is a story in and of itself.

I am sure that you are now in the position that you will have to finish the game even if for some reason you cannot continue with the Endurance run. It seems to me that it must take up a good portion of everyone's day and be murder on bandwidth. Although it must be turing into a great promotional tool for Giantbomb.

I have to wonder tho if your choice of game is what made this so successful and if any other Endurance run could ever be as good as this one. Kudos to you both for playing the game the way you have, it deserves to be played that way and I think you get a better experience because of it.

Thanks.

I was wondering if you were ever going to review the game.  It's nice to know your opinions regardless of whether or not you finish the endurance run.  I got the game when it came out but the ER forced me to start playing it and i've enjoyed it everyday since.

I certainly wouldn't have picked up Persona 4 if it wasn't for the endurance run. Firstly because it's PS2 game, I kinda stopped taking note of them a couple of years ago now, infact the last PS2 game I bought before P4 was God of War 2! Secondly I usually can't stand RPG's because I don't like the game mechanics and I really don't have the patience for them, however P4 has this undeniable charm that sort of drew me to it, I actually think it has a lot to do with the characters. Anyway I've been really enjoying it since I've been playing and I've just got to Kanji's shadow and haven't been this into a game since MGS4!

So I have to thank you for introducing me to a game I would have otherwise probably not even known existed!

I, myself have only just jumped onboard the endurance runs and have been enjoying the journey thus far.  I orginally decided not to follow this feature due to the fact that I originally thought that watching it would be time consuming (so far the all the episodes have been a decent length) and that I wouldn't be interested in the actual game.  It was only out of a "what the hell" moment that I started to watch.  I now find myself watching episode after episode.

One other thing I would like to point out is that, yes I have been interested in the runs, but I still think that if I was to play this myself, I probably would not have lasted as long as you guys have been going.  I think that you guys have added a dimension or a character to the game that wouldn not have been there if I had just played it myself. Basically Persona 4 + Vinny & Jeff = entertainment.  This may not have been your original intent, but believe me it's there.  Endurance Run probably hasn't done Persona 4 and favors for me personally, as I still probably won't come close to picking it up (nor any of the others in the series) any time in the future,  but Endurance Run has exposed me to game that may have otherwised never existed in my memory.

Keep it up guys!

I love these videos, even though I'm not a super fan of Japanese RPGS (if at all), I love watching you guys playing them, it's fun to watch a game get played, specially one that I've heard so much about and might never play, and let's not forget you guys make it hilarious. Like when that Mickey mouse sounding persona comes up, it just cracks me up how you guys put a voice to it. I love it.

I have a friend that likes Japanese style RPG:s and he have been waiting very long time for a new one that had the classic turnbased system in it. It actually looked like he had to wait for FInal Fantasy XIII to finally get his fix. After I had watched Endurance Run for a while I suddenly got the idea that this game might actually be precisely what my friend needed so I presented him the tip over lunch and he bought it right away.

I am now Jeff and my friend is Vinny with charge over the controller and we only play this game together. We are about 20 hours in now and it's no doubt that this is the best RPG we played in a very long time. For my personally that really not tocuhed an JRPG since Final Fantasy X or Kingdom Hearts II this is quite fantastic. Persona 4 i very different but has a really nice flow in combat and both engaging and entertaining story. A applaud Atlus for daring do something different.

Thanks Vinny and Jeff. Endurance Run helped my friend get his JRPG fix and me to once again enjoy a fully fleshed out JRPG.

Aion says:

'Also, I hope the other poster knows that telling someone to ignore me only helps draw attention onto myself. Not very smart.'

Firstly, what are we meant to say without giving you some sorta attention? The main reason we are saying this is because we just wanna let people know that you're just being a really annoying immature child.

Anyway, awesome work Jeff and Vinny.

My brother found out about Giant Bomb because of the Endurance Run and has watched all of them, which I found rather surprising. He's way into Let's Plays on YouTube and the like.

On the other hand, I've seen/heard just about everything you guys have put out EXCEPT the Endurance Run. Nothing against Persona 4, but I just don't have the patience to sit through a JRPG these days, and, I dunno, I think with all the time I'd have to devote to watching the videos I'd rather just play the game for myself, even given the fact that listening to Jeff and Vinny talk about it is obviously a good time.

Then again, if I had already played through the game I think watching these would be more frustrating and boring than anything. Just surprised how many people are out there who are willing to watch grinding and dungeon crawling and scrolling through dialogue. If there's going to be another Endurance Run, maybe the next game will interest me some more and I'll follow it, but it's going to take, what, like 6 more months before you finish this? Again, nothing against Persona 4. I just think an RPG is excruciatingly stale to watch and not play.

Other then the wiki, I think that the endurance run videos are the best thing on the site and hopefully you guys choose to do another endurance run when you finish Persona 4. I agree with not liking most RPGs nowadays too. The only ones I play pretty much now are the BioWare's and every now and then a Final Fantasy. Persona is something I've jumped into recently too and am enjoying it.

A little shout-out here though, I really really enjoyed Mass Effect. That was a real cool RPG. I'm more into RPGs like that where it has a big focus on custom character development (such as Persona.) If it doesn't have that, It's harder to keep my interest.

Well said about how RPGs are now. In contrast with Dragon Warrior for NES, FFXII is like flying a plane without any experience.

That is why I love the wii, because nintendo understood this. However, I sold the wii because it just sat in my house after a while.

Yeah, it is a tightrope act.

Indeed :) I'm one of those people who would never have bothered with this game were it not for the endurance run. I fell in love with how unpridictible the game is and all that social stuff really made up for stuff I have had ZERO interest in. Things like turned based combat -- stuff like that always scares me away from a game. That, and being randomly pulled into battle when running across the overworld.

Well said. I'm definitely in the group of people who started playing persona games after watching you guys go at it for a couple months. I've been blogging about it quite a bit as well. The interesting thing is that I am on the other side...I am one of those people who have been hardcore into JRPGs all along, and I've come out saying that I think Persona 4 is one of my favorite games of all time. Seeing as I began with Dragon Warrior on the NES when I was 5, that's saying something.

While in my opinion, the persona series is hella complicated, its attempts to make things seems more relatable and believable really make it work over the long run. You're on to something, when you say that JRPGs tend to lose everyone, and much of this lies in poor or cliche characterization. More often than not, the games do tend to throw random fantasy archetypes at you and leave it at that. More often than not, the potential for emotional connection of meaningful development is overshadowed by some cliche vendetta or stupid "story." Persona 4 examines inner demons and real personal shortcomings- albeit in a somewhat fantastical settings. This means that by the end of the game, you really feel as though you know the characters. This is an acheivement, really.

It is funny that some people say you're not doing it "right." That is pretty laughable really. Even among the JRPG hardcore, there are many, many different play styles, and it's all about preference and how you want to experience the game. Personally, I like to grind to the point of invincibility and do everything I can in one playthrough, while many friends like getting through as soon as possible just to reach the end and get a big challenge.

You really are doing everyone a favor by keeping your endurance up, thanks, seriously.

Great write up lol. I wasn't particularly fond of the Endurance from the start, but gradually I started to like it. It's a shame I haven't watched every single one, but I might when I feel like it. I agree with the JRPG thing. It's starting to decline because it's failed to evolve in any kind of way.

I think the reason why Atlus hasn't asked you to stop the Endurance Runs is because I think they're observing your reactions to Persona 4 by watching the vids. They'll see the good points, bad/weak points of the game, and figure out how they'll make it better in the "next" installment (Persona 5...?). The script was great, but you gotta admit there were some cheesy or weak dialogue here and there, and they might be just observing how they can get better and better with the localization. Besides, the Endurance Runs have already attracted lots of people, who originally never bothered to even give Persona 4 a chance. But now they are, and Atlus realizes this helps sell the product even more. Anyway, that's just my opinion, so there.

"It's funny to stumble upon some serious-style RPG forum and see people complain about how we're 'the worst Persona players ever' or something."
I know for a fact that being the best at this game wasn't your goal in the first place, but people can't help but cringe and kind of get annoyed when you guys do fumble in a part of the game or when you guys do something wrong. But that's how it is lol.

Anyway, I hope you and Vinny keep playing Persona 4 and the Endurance Runs. It's pretty much been one of  the most successful segments here at Giantbomb.  And besides, when you do get to finish the game, you still have Devil Summoner 2: Rise of King Abdomen for the next Endurance Run thing to deal with XD. Keep it up guys, and play until the end.

I ended up watching (for the first time) episodes 1 through 90 in the course of a single week, once my last semester ended. Instead of using that time to play games I just spent it watching the ER. I ended up buying Persona 3 and 4 once I was caught up, and am eagerly awaiting the PSP port of the first game, as well as trying to find a reasonable price for P2 somewhere online. So yeah, this ER thing totally sold me on the series. I'm thirty hours into P4, I love playing it. I really hope you guys decide on other games that deserve the same treatment once P4 is finished (knocking on wood). Thank you and good luck.

That game gets me riled.  Charlie is entering the toy a boy and leaving the town a boy.  These female social links haven't even gotten him a kiss.  Playa he an't.

I really enjoy your endurance run, and I do love a JRPG every now and again, but I think I would have more fun just watching you play than if I played it myself.  The game has a jargon of a plot that really doesn't have any direction. That randomness is more entertaining to watch than I would think to play.  Keep up the sweet sweet gameplay and don't forget your stupid fox quest.

Seems this is a way old blog entry now.

But anyway, it seems to me that the JRPGs stopped attracting new players with Final Fantasy X, 8 years ago. That's the last game I can remember pulling a substantial new audience in to the genre. Sadly after it was released there was a really long dark age where JRPGs struggled to get coverage or generate hype. I'm not talking about anything major, just a regular level of interest in the JRPGs that were coming out. It was partly due to the genre stagnating somewhat, but also because the games press seemed not to want to pay much attention to the games that were good.

Over the past couple of years though, the genre has shown signs of a return to form in terms of quality. However, the games press hasn't really shown much interest in the stand out titles as yet, so the genre has failed to produce another big hitter to rejuvinate it's audience. Giant Bomb has shown that if you put a quality game infront of people and make it the topic of discussion, then people will pay attention, and more importantly, they'll try it out themselves. Still, we're a long way from a JRPG taking center stage across the board and driving people to the genre en masse once again, but it does seem as though the tide may be turning. With Final Fantasy XIII on the horizon, perhaps the JRPG will finally score another critical hit?

It would be interesting if after Persona 4, the Giantbomb team tackles another game. It doesn`t have to be a long game, such as Persona, to be interesting.

I picked up P4 after seeing the first few eps of endurance run, and i have to say...i freaking love this game. It's one of the best games i've ever played, and i'll feel there will be a hole in my life when it ends! Yeah that probably sounds a little lame...meh, i'm cool with it. I also really enjoyed playing the game and then watching an episode of endurance run to see how your progress compared to mine and seeing you and vinny's hilarious reactions to certain situations (the first junes meeting with the mysterious fox comes to mind). You guys are a riot and i hope you don't ever change the tone of this site!

But anyway,

BRING ON PERSONA 5, DAMMIT (Please, please do another endurance run for persona 5!)

Peace out!

I'm not surprised Atlus didn't threaten legal recourse, Endurance Run is the best sort of viral marketing campaign for a game. The amount of people picking it up (including myself) attests to that. Keep having fun guys!

As Strong as you feel the characters in P4 are I connected with the story and cast of the P3 a lot more (Jenpei is still the man) that games story and gravity when it came to making you care about what was going is so much stronger than P4's. I will say the gameplay improvements in P4 do help to make it a stronger and less frustrating game (Though I still hate that MC death = gameover),

Basically, if you love P4 you will be loving P3.
