I was 15 not 12 when Halo 1 came out and I really liked that game. However it's not the best game ever. Maybe the best FPS game after Half-Life 2. 
 
Of those games in the List I would say MGS (which just so happens, came out when I was 12)

I know its really a mod for half life but would counter strike count? it did get a retail release, well over here in the UK it did. I put so many hours into that game it was the equivalent of cod4 but back in the late 90's/  early 2000's , the maps it came with where great and because it was a pc game you could fully costumise it by adding new maps skins huds etc

Sonic CD isn't any where near the best Sonic game ever made. Sonic 2 is. Sonic CD is butchered by terrible level design. 
 
Best game ever is Streets of Rage 2. Everyone knows this and it is a well established scientific fact.

I agree with most of this. I would putt Call of Duty Modern Warfare in place of sonic CD though. Despite the generation gap, Modern Warfare is probably the best war game out there. Which is saying quite a bit. 

Hmm, sure, I could see some people saying all of those things. 
But none of those games let you have a sword fight in which, if you're skillfull enough, you can have it end with you CUTTING A DUDE SO THAT HE FALLS DOWN INTO A PIT AND LANDS ON SPIKES THAT COME OUT OF THE FLOOR AND FUCKING IMPALES HIM.

I think Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Mario 64 have to be in the conversation: they redefined the side scrolling action, role playing and 3D platforming genres respectively. Even now, all of these games hold up as immensely enjoyable from start to finish.

I wasn't playing Goldeneye in college. I was playing it when I was in elementary school. And it's easily my favorite shooter.

to be fair to that guy i'll put in my two cents. I think GTA IV is. from a technical standpoint, story wise, and just overall goodyness, its the greatest game of all time. Everything about that game was perfect(online.....yess with right friends was freakin awsome). The game doesn't bring anything too revolutionary but to be the greatest game do you have too? (actually serious question I don't entirely know what your basing this off of cause it seems pretty random)  Its jsut overall the greatest game because it's really really good. Also not my favorite game in the world, my favorite game is super smash bro's brawl......and if you actually read this Jeff i know this makes my opinion null and void but hey its the game i had/have the most fun with don't hate, jsut what do you think of people saying gta IV, too soon to tell?

I'm just ecstatic that the two games I would use to answer this question are in fact numbers 1 and 2 on this list. Huzzah.

Needs more Planescape: Torment or Baldur's Gate II. There are quite a few infinity engine fans (such as myself) who may consider one of those two the best game ever.

NiGHTS into Dreams for me. Playing that game felt so good. It was like I was walking on air the first time I played it. Been my favorite game ever since.

I'm surprised you'd have SOTN and not Super Metroid, but I'm sure this has been brought up a dozen times already, so whatever.
 
I'm also kind of surprised that there's no RPG to speak of.

No love for RPG's? Get a representative on there, like Baldur's Gate II. I guess SotN is an rpg, and an excellent game, but not the same style.

I think everyone's answer to this speaks as much to what defined gaming when you first started gaming than anything else.  It's difficult to beat out that amazing game that you played forty-five times because a) it was amazing and b) it was one of only two games you got that year.  Once you get old enough to support your own gaming habit, you simply have too many games to choose from to pick one of them as "greatest of all time". 
 
Along those lines, my answers would be either Zelda: LttP or Super Metroid.  Games earlier than that never pulled me in as much, and I haven't found a game later than those two that captivated me in the same way.

I'd have to go with Starcraft just because of how much time I have put into the game over the years. Not to mention it is probably the only game that I have installed on countless computers over the years.
