My Latest Gaming Obsession: Face Of Mankind

A PC gamer article pointed out the diamond in the rough that is Face of Mankind (FOM) to me. Its an free to play MMO (Although obviously, people who pay gets some nice benefits, i am a free player though.) It is not a normal game in that the game mechanics are not the focus, this game is all about the players themselves and the chaos/awesomeness that ensues when you let the community itself decide the rules. I could write pages upon pages about all the little parts of this game that make it so unique. But..... im not that good at writing and this post will be long enough without that. Here are the basics.

The LED moving in for the arrest.
The LED moving in for the arrest.

There are multiple factions, one of those factions is called the Law Enforcement Department (LED), its the one I am part of, they arrest people who gank or do other shady stuff like smuggle drugs or try to free people who have been arrested. They also guard the jail, Demorgan's Castle

The crime fighting elements of this MMO are some of it's most interesting aspects, wars break out between player factions because an officer arrests someone with alot of influence in his or her's faction's community, and out of anger, that person rallys his comrades to get revenge. The LED are the one's who keep the game safe for the no aggressive factions, often this doesn't work, its not hard for some bored player to buy a few grenades and start bombing the hell out of New York City (One of the game's locations.) but the LED almost always keeps such incidents to a minimum.
An LED patrol on the move
An LED patrol on the move

Becoming an LED is not easy, your first rank is achieved via xp, but in order to pass beyond that first rank, you need to take a player run class about how to enforce the law and why shooting first is a bad idea. This is run by the LED's Dominion Police Institute department. After taking it, you can get rank 2. But beyond that, its all up to your own ability as an officer, if you can attract the attention of a higher up you can be promoted. The highest rank is the faction commissioner, there are 2  (Although recently the 2nd commissioner resigned, so its sorta up in the air whether or not a new one will take his place.), they work directly with the other faction heads, and the player run government (The Dominion Senate.)

Not the prettiest game (For an MMO its not bad), but its got it where it counts.

I need to keep myself from trying to explain every detail of this game, but to sum it up, I am loving this game because the community interaction is so deep and you can become involved in so many crazy events. A month ago, a coup de' etat occured when the Freedom Defense corps (FDC), a military faction devoted to protecting the Senate, (It is considered the iron fist of the senate with the LED being law enforcement) locked the senators in the senate hall after calling an emergency meeting, and slaughtered them. A civil war raged in the game for the next week and a half. (The LED won and the FDC's high command had all their ranks removed) Today, a group of peace loving players charged the entrance to Demorgan's castle and did a sit in. Then a group of player's from the game's anarchist mercenary group used it as an opportunity to stage an assault, most of the protestors died.

Preparing to repel an FDC assault during the civil war. Note the matching uniforms (We are awesome at color coordination.)

So this post may seem disjointed because I keep stopping myself from getting too explicit. If thats the case, im sorry, I hope some of you at least decide to come check out this game, its so unique that you should at least try it. Anyways, I need to go loot some dead protester bodies........

15 Things I love about Giant Bomb

15 things that I love about Giant Bomb

Giant Bomb Is awesome, here is why.

Also, I want my list related site-achievements.......  But seeing as I actually put some effort in, i might as well share it with y'all.
This is a weak list as I consider all these things equally awesome, so number 1 may not necessarily be any better than number 4 or 5, but here goes nothing.

1. Brad Shoemaker

He's kinda awesome...... and by love I mean love in a friendly sort of way. He's one of the most entertaining people on the internet today. He's quiet but when he does speak up and makes a point he's usually right.

2. Deadly Premonition

They devoted an entire series of competing videos to one of the weirdest games of this console generation. Thats just plain stupid, yet I love it.

3. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

I still hate both anime and JRPGs, but at least the Endurance Run made me realize people who play games like this aren't totally out of their minds.

4. Jeff Gerstmann

He has his own scandal named after him. If you look him up on Youtube you get videos of him speaking on Good Morning America in shorts. What else needs to be said?

5. Steam Achievements

Finally, the world can know that PC players do stuff to! Thank you Giant Bomb for tracking everyone's achievements, including us PC gamers.

6. Jungler

God I love inside jokes, the Bombcast is chock full of them, and even if it took me awhile to figure out what the hell Jeff was talking about, I still found it hilarious.

7. New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Best Quick Look the site has ever had, when you bring in the entire GB crew, chaos insues, we see a little bit of each staff member's personalitys. Brad dies.... constantly, Ryan diabloically charges ahead, Jeff shows calm indifference, and Vinny just seems very confused.

8. Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason

What the hell is cryostatsis, and why is it so janky! It can't possibly be good. Dave explains why I am mostly wrong..... Now it all makes sense.

9. Story Hour: Adventures

This game's quick look never should never should have been made, but because the GB crew thought otherwise, we we're given one of the most hilarious videos i've seen on the site.

10. Ryan Davis

TANG was a brilliant concept, and he sat through terrible movie after terrible movie just so we wouldn't have to, he's a hero in his own right.

11. Alex Navarro

Well I suppose he isn't actually part of Giant Bomb, but I sure do love when we get to hear from him on the occasional podcast.

12. Wiiware

The Wii Ware portion of the Bombcast make me both happy and sad that I am a Wii owner, at least we get some jokes out of all of it.

13. DSiWare

Same reasons as above, the meaning of Mario Clock is forever changed in my mind.

14. Mount & Blade

There are others who play this game? REALLY! The Giant Bomb forums let me find out.

15. Star Trek Online

If it werent for Giant Bomb I would have missed out on the beta and being part of Space Neon Lobsters, the last day of the beta and the Live stream gave me some of the best gaming moments i've ever had. The game may not be perfect, but the people are awesome. Way to be GB.....

I Suck at Computers......

So today my Internet dropped out while downloading Mass Effect 2 from Steam, after about an hour of trying to fix it It still did not work. All my wireless devices worked fine (Ipod Touch, Netbook.) but my main desktop would not connect to the network. I continued to try and find solutions when a startling thought occured to me...

What if i restarted the thing, madness, surely I would  be committed if I were to attempt such a thing. But I did anyways, and damn it, it worked.

So basically now im scared of my computer skills, I know just enough to fuck stuff up, but not enough to do anything useful. I once got as far as typing stuff into the weird console window with the black and white text, in order to set up a static IP address for something and after awhile I gave up out of fear I'd do something I wouldn't be able to come back from. I also hear people who play PC games reformat alot, i barely know what that means but damn it sounds terrifying. That and reinstalling windows which sounds like something only a person who truly hates themselves would want to do. That said, I know more about computers than pretty much everyone around me, if only i felt like it......

Anyways, I just wanted to vent my computer angst, hopefully im not the only one who can't do krap with computers.

The most fun I had in the STO beta, was at it's end.

So as you all know the STO beta is now over. I got to close it out with the Space Neon Lobsters, Jeff, Ryan, Vinny and Brad.  And it was at the end that STO showed how truly fun it could be. Many of you question the wisdom of people who buy lifetime subscriptions, and i cannot say that I will ever join that group, but what I do know is that STO gave me some of the best gaming moments i have had in a long time.

No One partys like Space Neon......
No One partys like Space Neon......

The Lobsters Grouped up at Deep Space 9 at the start of the event, where we fought off a few klingon players, and spent most of our time dancing, an hour or so later we were at the Earth Space Dock, fighting off hordes of borg from a balcony overlooking what used to be a bunch of ship shops, we held them off well considering they were 30 something levels higher than us. When jeff Showed up, we all grouped up in the admirals office, and the rest you all know about from the video.  We messed around, typed SPACE NEON, in all caps, and said we were Oscar Mike while dancing in the middle of Borg filled hallways. That alone may be worth the 300 dollar lifetime Subscirption. We fought, we died (Alot) and we didn't care, we never had to make a corpse run, or worry about all our debuffs, and stats and whatnot, we just killed some borg, and loved every minute of it. (Star Trek online is my type of MMO.)

Never surrender (There were more of us, most of us were dead by now though and waiting to respawn.)
Never surrender (There were more of us, most of us were dead by now though and waiting to respawn.)

Sure these events were a hell of alot more fun with the GB staff there to provide commentary, but nothing compares to fighting off an army of borg with a bunch of awesome people. ( And we used PHASERS, to fight BORG, in STAR FLEET command. How is that not awesome?)  I can't say im even a Star Trek Fan ( The newest movie and a few episodes of TNG are my only experience with the series.), but i found it absolutely wonderful. Even with a little bit of jankiness in game from all those borg (More than 300 in that area of the base alone, if you tried to run into the hallways you would encounter walls of the things,, as Jeff tried many times without success. i have no idea how many were in the other side of the base  .)  the game was still alot of fun, and the action was absolutely mindblowing.  And this wasn't even the space combat i was taking part in, which is arguably the game's greatest strength.

All hail Jeff. ( I agree, the hero worship thing is kinda creepy, but the only other option was to dance, while waiting for the live stream to start.)

Cryptic originally had me doubting if STO can even be considered an MMO, but after today, I realize, it will go on to be one of this year's biggest MMOs.

We're Oscar Mike.
We're Oscar Mike.

So yea, if Cryptic can find a way to let moments like that happen in the retail game, then they most certainly deserve a ton of support. I might have to look into subscribing at some point this year as well......

I dance best when on fire.

I also took like 800 FRAPS screenshots that i now don't know what to do with, so here is one more.

Games I missed in 2009.

Games of 2009 I wanted to play, but didn't

The New Years reminded me of one thing, I did not play alot of major games this year. Most of my time was spent on games from the past I never really got to such as Garry's mod, TF2, Fallout 3, Mount and Blade and Call of Duty 4.  Also, Modern Warfare 2 took up so much time that there wasn't much room at the end of the year for anything else. These are some of the games that im really upset I never got to play.

Missing all these games almost assures I will be playing 2009 games for most of 2010, leading to an endless cycle of being behind on playing all the great games.  Too bad, one day I will get ahead.

1. Killzone 2

This game really impressed me. The graphics and effects wowed me. I was amazed at how much detail was put into the battles , from the explosions going on in the background, to the sound of bullets whizzing by. It seemed like a very intense experience. Only problem..... i don't own a PS3, with a little effort I could have played it at one of my friend's houses but I never did.

2. Dragon Age: Origins

I was scared off this game for two reasons, the inevitable time commitment and the possibility that it may be too good, and i would get pulled away from all the other games I would want to play. The last Bioware RPG I played was KOTOR, and that sucked me in for weeks. I will play this game, it seems like a fantastic RPG, I just wished I had put some time into it before 2010.

3. Empire: Total War

I love RTS games and Empire seemed to have it all. Yet I never put in the effort to grab it during the various steam sales this year. I heard it was buggy so prehaps that was what stopped me. It seemed to combine all the positives of a game like Civilization, with the depth of strategy found in all the other Total war games. I missed out on this one. At least my need for RTS was filled by Men of War.

4. The Sims 3

I didn't play this game because...... well...... theres no real reason as to why I didn't. Sims 3 is just the kind of game that will be as fun 3 years from now as it is today, theres nothing in it that can really be outdated. So there wasn't any urgency to buy this. I'll get to it soon enough. As soon as i get the urge to delete all the ladders on a pool and watch my sims drown, i'll grab it.

5. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

2009 is also the year when i began to think that a PS3 would be a good investment. Uncharted Two, Infamous, and Killzone were all fantastic PS3 exclusives I would have liked to check out. This game impressed me with it's vibrancy and solid mechanics, it looked like a ton of fun, although it didn't particularly wow me like some other games did.

6. Forza Motorsport 3

I've always wanted to try out a racing sim like Gran Turismo, but they never made much sense to me. Forza would be the perfect game for breaking into this. However I have zero interest in paying for an Xbox 360 and all it's attachments. (If you add up the cost of an xbox and all the attachments, like live, a wireless adapter since I cant be stretching an ethernet cord all through my house, an extra controller, the game itself, and a hardrive, it gets crazy expensive.) I'll have to find someone I know with this game, although most people I hang around with arent big on racing games, so this might be the game i never really play.

7. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Everyone says this game is great, and aside from a short demo, i didn't get to experience it. Batman is awesome and I love brawler type games like this (I thought the watchman game was actually alot of fun). But Batman also has alot of depth to it that most other games in this genre don't. I was irritated everytime people compared it to metroid though, the back and forth in those games drives me mad. I like more direct experiences, but Batman may be the game that will one day change that idea. Assuming I ever get to it.

8. Torchlight

I played the demo fo this and loved it, and its so cheap, why didn't i buy it ! Oh yea, Call of Duty. These two games hit very close two one another, I simply couldn't bring myself to purchase a game I wasn't going to play alot of. This game has me interested in Diablo 3, and since that game is never going to come out, i might need to grab torchlight to hold me over.

9. Borderlands

10 million guns means this game must be awesome. I would love to try it out but that alone wasn't enough for me to buy it.

10. Assassin's Creed II

This isnt higher on my list because the only reason i missed it in 2009 was that it won't come on PC until sometime in early 2010. ( I should really get an HD console) But hey, the first one was pretty good aside from lots of looping sound clips and plenty of repetition. I also have to be careful to avoid any and all spoilers about it until it comes out.

Chopper Gunner is cool and all..... but an AC130 is friggin scary

So now its time for me to be the 150th idiot who has posted a blog on their impressions about MW2s multiplayer! Aren't you all excited? Yes, yes you are.

Basically, MW2 is the most complete multiplayer experience i have ever played. Theres little i could ask for to improve on it. IW did a great job.  Im playing the PC version and despite what people may tell you, its actually good. Alot of people come on here and complain that there are a million hackers, the lag is horrible, and you get disconnected all the time. I'd like to inform you they are wrong, Ive only seen one hacker in the 60 or so hours ive played, serious lag occurs in maybe 1 out of every 20-30 matches, disconnects are a little more common than most games, but 95 percent of the time, you can go through a dozen rounds without getting disconnected

Yea i beat everyone! WOOOHOO, oh wait, im in second, sonofabitch.
Yea i beat everyone! WOOOHOO, oh wait, im in second, sonofabitch.

PC Specific tech issues aside, the game play is wonderful, with a few pet peeves that don't really hurt the overall experience. For one, Sniping is trickier now, not impossible, just harder, the maps are not really designed for it of course, but it is a little weird. I used to love sniping but now i feel like i really need to practice it to get good. Which is not really a bad thing, just something i need to figure out. Also, i get really annoyed by people who use akimbo weapons, they dont kill me any more than anyone else, they just get on my nerves for some reason when they do. And those akimbo shotguns are a little too powerful. My final little issue with the game is due to two maps, Underpass and Run Down. Underpass is too big and the weather effects make targetting enemys a hassle, on this map a thermal scope is a must. Rundown is just messed up, theres only three ways across the river and both of those ways are easily camped by the opposing team. But these are my only issues.

Mixing and matching classes is what made call of duty 4 really interesting to me in comparison to COD2, this continues with MW2, only now i have trouble deciding on what to bring in with me. there are so many options it can cause a serious headache, but now you have the ability to create classes with their own "traits", you can have a stealth class, a runner class, or just class designed to fling huge amounts of explosives and grenades at the enemy. The fact that you now have unlocks for almost everything including perks means the carrot on a stick mechanic is more powerful than ever, there is always something else to get for your favorite gun.

I could go on forever with what I like, but im going to skip ahead to the most interesting aspect of the game (and the reason for my title.), killstreaks. Killstreaks can totally adjust your play style. Set it up to give you a nuke and you will have to fight like a mad man to get those kills, give yourself a predator missile and a pavelow, and you set yourself up for a really good kill/death ratio.  The fact that killstreaks are now much more interactive makes them even more rewarding, no longer do you leave it up to the AI to decide how effective your kill streak is going to be, at the same time, kill streaks are somewhat riskier now, at least with the airdrop ones, if you call in an airdrop you better be prepared to watch your back because enemys are going to be gunning for you, and if you should bring in an emergency airdrop and the opposing team captures it. You can turn your team's victory into a defeat or vice versa. You also never know what you are going to get, and to get yourself killed trying to rescue a airdrop crate with nothing but a resupply in it can really ruin your day. What MW2 comes down to is it's decisions, do i want an Ac-130 or a chopper gunner, an Acog scope or a red dot sight, a SCAR or a FAL. By giving the power to the player IW makes a game that allows for limitless possibilities and experiences. And to think, i almost spent my money on Left 4 Dead.

Talk Me Down Off this Ledge

I reallly want to buy MW2, its my favorite game franchise of all time, and if you didn't notice, that most recent trailer was absolutely epic. But theres an issue, I want it on PC, so buying it will mean im paying 10 dollars above the normal price for a game that doesn't even live up to its whole potential. (They reduced the player cap from COD4, thats a serious step backwards for any game ported to a PC platform.) Sure it was to give us leaderboards so we could prestige 60 milion times over and grow our nerd pride and to let us brag to our nerdy friends over whos better , but its still a step backwards.  And since i spend 95 percent of my time not on the singleplayer of a game, i'd be better off not spending money on a sub standard game.

I could simply preorder L4D2, for 44 bucks, get a full game with good multiplayer, that actually does what a PC game should, and get a free baseball bat to go along with it, (This is what we call, the sensible thing to do.) but for some reason, i cant bring my self to buy it......... anyone care to help snap me out of this momentary insanity before i preorder modern warfare.......

So Activision just saved me 60 bucks.

( How do i post a blog to a specific forum?)

Im not buying MW2 for PC, and if I do it will be several months after release when its cheaper. They cut dedicated server support and mods from the game so they could make it like a console game. Jeff is right it is a console port, but so was 4, and most could argue so was WAW and 2, but they both had server browsers. And yea, it still has that great multiplayer but half my time in call of duty games has been spent on mod servers.

They have no reason to cut support like that, they are lazy, does anyone feel like their experience playing call of duty on a console has been hurt by PC players getting some special stuff? Because thats their excuse for making all versions equal. Robert Bowling better fucking explain himself... I hoped IW was better than this. I never thought consoles would make PC games worse, but they have.

Developers feel the need to set the bar as low as possible and make it like a console game, when they could actually improve it and make a better game overall. But who am I kidding, developers aren't about making GOOD games anymore.

And yea, sorry if this doesnt make any sense, im just pissed.
