My Game of the Year Candidates

2010 is a year that started strong for gaming, and good stuff has been coming out all year more or less.

Here's my personal candidates for game of the year.

- Mass Effect 2

No Caption Provided
This is one heck of an impressive sequel. I wasn't really sure if I liked the first Mass Effect, but after importing my character to 2 and playing through it, I'm totally enamored with the universe. I've played through every bit of DLC and I currently hold an S-rank for this game, and it's my favorite on the 360 by far. I've even beaten the game twice after going through the original game again! It's a fantastic sequel and better in every way.

- Alan Wake
No Caption Provided
Creepy, moody, and sporting a fantastic story, Alan Wake is a great experience. The gameplay is solid, too. It does drag on a bit and can get a little frustrating, but this is one game you shouldn't miss if you appreciate Hitchcock films or suspenseful novels.

    - Bayonetta
No Caption Provided
Bayonetta is utterly insane. It's also quite possibly the best character-action game on the market currently, beating out the Ninja Gaidens, God of Wars, and Devil May Crys out there. It's stylish, it's slick, and it's lengthy. It's also brutally difficult, making it a great game for all those hardcore gamers out there. If only it had a language filter option a la Gears of War...I just skip the cutscenes and cut to the gameplay anyway. Also I hear the PS3 version is broken. That's really a shame.

- Super Street Fighter IV
No Caption Provided
Super Street Fighter IV adds to the original with ten more characters, more locations, more moves, and further balanced gameplay. It's a fantastic fighting game that gets deeper the more you play it, and it's nearly perfect in its feature set. It still lacks a good training mode to get novice players (like me) up to speed, and the online components could use a few tweaks. A fantastic value nonetheless.

- Super Mario Galaxy 2
No Caption Provided
SMG 2 is brilliant. It builds upon its incredible masterpiece of a predecessor in smart and creative ways. It never stops for breath, and is so filled with variety and style that it puts other games to shame. The 2D platforming sections littered throughout make New Super Mario Bros. Wii look like third-rate shovelware, and the music is fantastic once again. I never felt like I was treading old ground. WE NEED MORE PLATFORMERS LIKE THIS ON ALL CONSOLES, DANG IT!!!

Stay tuned for updates as I play more games, and my potential Downloadable Game of the Year list as well.

Oh crap, Bayonetta came out this year. Seems like so long ago. This is a good list.  :)

Sadly I never got to finish Mass Effect 2 (I borrowed it), but RB3 and SMG2 are definitely right up there for me as well.

Very Solid list. Alan wake was a great experience. I thought the story and the atmosphere was amazing. I think it will be under represented in a lot of GOTY lists. ME2 i think is going to sweep the lists this year. ( I can't believe it is already time to start thinking about game of the year games.)

I'd definitely say ME2 will have the best shot at GOTY out of those on this list. These are all great games, but IDK... I just think that ME2 is the only GOTY worthy title there. Maybe its just my extremely biased Mass Effect Fanboy opinion though... plus I totally suck at fighting games and rhythm games and therefore kind of dislike them, so thats 2 games off the list for me right there :P

It's really between Mass Effect 2 and Super Mario Galaxy 2.  Strange how they are both the refined sequels of genuine inspired game of the year candidates from 2007.

I also came to the realization a few days ago that Mass Effect 2 was a 2010 release, I think the early release has thrown people off. It is definitely my pick for GOTY though.

Very good list. I would argue against Alan Wake, but your opinion is valid. I would definitely say that Mass Effect 2 is the winner among these. I put Bayonetta at #2. I haven't played Galaxy 2, but I assume it is at least as good as the first. If that's the case it easily ocupies a spot on the top 5.

Alan Wake is perhaps one of my favourites so far. Halo Reach and Mass Effect 2 also come into consideration.

There are quite a lot this year, which is nice as it has been a good year I think so far even with all the delays and pushed back games to next year.

Unfortunately, no. I don't have a Wii anymore either. But I do love me some SMG 2... Did that many PS3 exclusives come out this year? There was Heavy Rain, and...MAG? Did that come out this year?

Yep. There was also God of War III and ModNation.

I haven't played it and don't plan to. I don't like the raunchy crap Rockstar puts in their games, and I haven't ever enjoyed one of their games anyway. "

And yet Bayonetta is way raunchier than RDR.

ME2 is the winner on the list, but I don't understand your moral distinctions.  Why go for ME or Bayonetta but not rockstar games.  Doesn't seem consistent to me.

"Candidates"? So what you're saying is that all of these six games are so close in quality, it's borderline impossible to choose one over the others?

When John Marston is confronted with a lady of the night, he says, "Sorry, I'm a married man." That's pretty damn raunchy.

I was left scratching my head on that train of thought as well.

@Claude: I think he means the special hot kettle corn mod.  Sometimes if you time it right when you're riding through a corn field, a slutty cowgirl will come out and let you play 'cornhole.'

Though the press has totally mischaracterized this easter egg.  Anyone who tailgates for sporting events or goes to cookouts knows that cornhole is a game invovling two wood boards and six beanbags, not something nasty.

P.S. I didn't ask for my moral values to be questioned here, thank you. John Marston may be a more upstanding character than many others in Rockstar's games, the overall game is far too raw and gritty for me so I won't bother playing it. Bayonetta is just ridiculous, and really shouldn't have so much swearing so I skip the cutscenes and just play the game. Mass Effect 2 is mostly fine. I would've preferred Jack to not swear so much, but what can you do...I just never used her and rarely talked to her. RDR has an explicit sex scene from what I hear, and horrible filthy and racist language throughout, plus incredibly brutal violence at times.

There's nothing coming out later this year that even sort of interests me at this point. Rock Band 3 will probably be the last new game I get this year. Halo Reach is really disappointing me, but I'll probably hang on to it to play with friends/family online since it's the only game multiples of them own.

For most people it seems that GOTY is a competition between ME2 and RDR. Personally, my vote goes to RDR. Why? Because it is the first and only Rockstar game I ever liked enough to finish. In fact, I played through it twice. John Marston was just a great character that you grew to love. He was a nice guy who was trying to put his past behind him and was being screwed over by both sides of the law. Despite all that, he never abandoned his morals. You spent the entire game with him as he fought tooth and nail to redeem himself and earn a little bit of happiness. The fact that the game actually managed to evoke an actual emotional response from me is something I have to applaud it for. It is something that no other game did. And on top of that, it had a lot of fun stuff to do, had great graphics, and the sound design was top notch. Oh, and all the glitches you came across were so weird and confusing they somehow made the game better. Luckily, they weren't all that common. Also, Nigel West Dickens.

Point is, you owe it to yourself to play that game. Seriously. Give Rockstar a chance on this one. It would kind of be like if in 2007 you gave your opinion on the best game of the year and then said you didn't play Bioshock, or what your best film of the year for 2008 was without watching The Dark Knight. Sure, that might not change what your pick would have been anyway, but it was still one of the more important and impactful releases of the year.

Try the Mass Effect 2 PC demo.  I didn't like it.
