Around when the website launched I floated around and checked in, but it wasn't until later that I made an account here. Been a subscriber since the day it was available.
Just go with Recruit Packs to begin with until you've got some of the common weapons maxed, then move to Veteran, and then move to Spectre or Premium Spectre. You will not have unlocked ultra-rare weapons/gear/characters early on that way, but it's a reliable method.
Guess what, Phil Fish, that money they're asking for isn't just a privilege fee. It's easy to make Microsoft look like the bad guy in this, but they want to ensure quality when a patch hits. They're just supposed to assume the developer has tested the patch to the full extent, OR just offer them QA and certification services for free?
EDIT: Additionally, this sends a bad message to the Fez fanbase. Hey guess what, we think it costs too much money to give you the best we can do, so we're just going to settle for good enough. Unfortunate.
