Resistance 2 Review

4
  • PS3

Resistance 2 ditches the storytelling in favor of an excellent multiplayer experience.

Oh, Resistance 2! You are so confused about what you want out of me. Do you want me to play through your horrible single-player campaign, with its erratic and nonsensical storytelling? Would you rather I just concentrate on your deep and engaging multiplayer modes? How about if we just start from the top and answer these questions together?

Dude, don't look at me. I was following you!
Dude, don't look at me. I was following you!
The story in Resistance 2 picks up immediately after the events of its predecessor, Resistance: Fall of Man. You again jump into the shoes of American solider Nathan Hale. Nathan, and the rest of the world, are fighting against what appear to be alien invaders, dubbed the Chimera, though the aliens are actually humans who have been transformed through some kind of horrible infection. Nathan himself was infected in the original Resistance, but instead of going over to the dark side his condition gave him the edge to become the savior of the day. A hero's work is never done and Resistance 2 begins with Nathan being abducted by some special military organization. It turns out that this group is actually responsible for experimenting on humans with the alien virus in an effort to create super soldiers--but they're still the good guys...I think. En route to their special facility your helicopter crashes--the first of numerous fateful downings--and you'll fight a bit before quickly being introduced to some kind of Chimeran smart bug. Without so much as a sinister expository preamble, this malicious alien-man-thing dons his MacGuffin hat and escapes to wreak havoc on the world. You are then sedated and the prologue ends. Welcome to Resistance 2! Fast-forward two years later and you're now buddy-buddy with these special forces fellows. Oh, did I mention you've had some kind of experimental operation and your crazy underwater base is under attack? GO!

So that's the setup. You're still infected but now you need regular doses of antigen or things will apparently go very badly. Also, some of your comrades don't much appreciate the busy and heroic lifestyle that will inherently keep you away from said meds. That's about all you need to know about the story. You're obviously trying to save the world again, and this time  around it's not the lonely, silent trek it was in the first installment. You'll be treated to a stable of recurring supporting characters, but they are never clearly defined and by the time the game hits its conclusion, you really won't care. Neither will Nathan apparently, as he seems totally indifferent to the fields of death being sowed around him. That's not to say these brave souls are worthless, as the game is actually at its best when it throws you into the midst of larger, epic battles with your allies. This also works to give you the impression that there is a lot more going on behind the scenes, but none of that information is ever presented to you in a reasonable or coherent manner.

While the game is supposed to be taking place in an alternate version of the '50s, you'll never really get that vibe aside from the old cars and some antique radios. The weapons you'll be using will mostly be alien, or at least modified beyond anything recognizable for the time period, and any allies you have with you will do little to keep you in the spirit of the era. The only thing that maintains some semblance of time and place is a distraught radio announcer that you'll occasionally be able to overhear as you checkpoint your way across America. The poor guy is actually one of the better story elements in the game, and it's probably worth your time to sit and listen to his morbid antics.

Well, this is happening now...
Well, this is happening now...
Those are my biggest gripes with the game, though there were a few more minor annoyances. I really enjoyed much of the actual combat and gameplay, aside from a few enemy behaviors with which I took issue. You'll trade fire with your standard Chimeran grunts, but you'll also encounter some special units, like the invisible Chameleons. Now, in addition to being able to cloak themselves, they'll also charge you, and they'll kill you in one hit. Apparently they make some noise when they are around, but as far as I could tell it all just sounded like pigeons cooing. To counter this, the game automatically saves checkpoints pretty frequently, so you'll never be too far away from your last sudden and surprising place of death. This leads to a lot of try-and-die gameplay, and you'll find things are not so tough when you have some fair warning. There are also some new zombie-like Chimera which will swarm at you as you try to mow them down. These are definitely of the “fast zombie” variety and I found myself backed into a corner more than once, screaming “Oh God, Oh God, Oh...I'm dead.” These baddies are hatched from cocoons and you'll mostly encounter them in the overrun towns you'll be traipsing through. While the “body snatchers” idea definitely adds to the creepier direction this game has adopted, it doesn't seem to make much sense as these young turks don't need the special cooling systems that the rest of the Chimera use to prevent them from overheating. The first game went so far as to have entire conversion centers for the processing of humans into Chimera. It's minor, but it bugged me.

You'll be treated to some new weapons but you'll also see some slightly modified versions from the original Resistance armament. The Auger, which originally only allowed you to blindly shoot through walls, now lets you keep track of your target as he hides behind cover, which is very, very handy. Each weapon, again, has two modes of fire and this time around I found myself using them often. The magnum, for example, not only packs quite a punch with its primary fire but, using the alternate fire, you can subsequently detonate any spent rounds. This is a quick way to improvise an explosive surprise for the oncoming hordes of Chimera. The only time I found myself getting frustrated with the weapons is when one of my less-than-effective teammates was wielding one of the rarer heavy weapons, with seemingly unlimited ammunition. In my hands that weapon could turn the entire tide of the war! Sadly, the opportunity to sacrifice that young man for the good of mankind never presented itself.

The locations have also been well expanded beyond the seemingly endless grey, industrial maps of the original. You'll be greeted by some really spectacular set pieces as you as span a good chunk of North America in your quest to do something...or other. Not all of the locales are great, but when they work, they work with flourish, and you won't be disappointed in the eye candy.

Once you've finished the campaign you can go back and select any level to replay. This is helpful if you want to collect any missing pieces of intel you may have missed your first time through. These sparse collectibles are really your only window into the overarching fiction.  As someone who really appreciates some narrative context surrounding my mass murder, I found myself desperate to latch onto anything that might give me some more insight. While the intel you find won't do much to make the entire world make sense, it is a must for anyone hoping to extract even the slightest bit of coherence from the plot.

Fighting other humans is where this game shines.
Fighting other humans is where this game shines.
Really, though, all this single-player nonsense is just an introduction and setup for the much more engaging multiplayer. It's in the cooperative and competitive multiplayer that Resistance 2 really begins to deliver on being one of the best shooters for the PlayStation 3. While the head scratching single-player campaign will take you all of 8-10 hours, the multiplayer modes are where players are going to sink the majority of their time. Both modes offer a leveling system that allows you to gain experience and unlock new items and abilities. It's easy to get engrossed in the constant need to reach the next level with any given class, and that's further aided by the ease with which you can actually get into games. Both modes include a button labeled “play” which instantly takes you into the action and on the road to gaining experience. While you still have the option to manually setup or pick a map, being able to get into a game in one button press really takes the anxiety out of having to find a group, especially for the co-op.

Calling the co-op a campaign is actually a bit of a misnomer. It really has nothing to do with the single-player campaign, other than taking place in the same universe and making liberal use of that special forces team you just met. Upon starting a map, you, and up to seven other players, will pick a class from three different archetypes: soldier, special ops, and medic. The most outstanding element is how much all these classes need to rely on each other, probably more than in any other class-based shooter I've played before. The medic will obviously heal your team while the special ops member is your only source of ammunition. The soldier class gets the heavy weapon and he'll be at the vanguard of your attacks. Luckily, the secondary fire on his weapon will throw up a shield and protect him from incoming fire, but it's still in everyone's best interest to constantly feed him health and ammunition. It demands a balanced and diverse team, and grouping with a party that understands these particular roles is a rewarding and unique experience.

Speaking of experience, you'll be racking it up almost constantly while you blast your way through each map. New levels will unlock new weapons and abilities, making you all the more eager to hit that play button again and again. Your team will also have the opportunity unlock a certain amount of something called “grey tech” per map, depending on how far you can make it without everyone dying. This grey tech can then be spent on even more upgrades for each class, and unlike earned experience, the amount of grey tech you have acquired isn't locked to the particular class with which you may have earned it.

These are some really nice places for killing.
These are some really nice places for killing.
On the competitive side of the multiplayer you'll find Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Core Control (essentially capture the flag) and Skirmish. Skirmish is probably the most exceptional, and for my money, the most entertaining of the bunch. This mode allows a total of 60 players--yeah, 60--to compete in a variety of objectives. The players are broken up into two teams, each of which is further broken up into smaller squads and then assigned their own unique objectives. It's a really fun mode, which will have your squad racing around the map to different flash points as new objectives appear. It's also a mode which makes good use of the extremely high player counts, whereas some of the others felt a little too chaotic for my aging reflexes. Luckily, when I got bored or embarrassed in the competitive arenas I would drag my sorry ass back to the excellent eight player co-op, which is where I spent the majority of my time.

So there you have it. Resistance 2 has a rubbish single-player campaign, which left me angry and confused. The lack of coherent storytelling is my biggest issue, but there's really nothing wrong with the overall gameplay. I am still of the opinion that the rest of the package makes it one of the best multiplayer shooters currently out for the PlayStation 3. Though my experience with the co-op definitely varied depending on the group I was with, it never ceased being entertaining. On top of that, the leveling seems to come slowly, but just quickly enough to keep you coming back for more. This game does not stand out for its single-player content, but those interested in sinking hours and hours into a unique and rewarding multiplayer shooter experience will find Resistance 2 well worth their money.

I just finished my second run-through of the game, and I completely agree with everything Vinny said about the single-player.  Yes, it's fun and there were some cool moments in it (albeit with a bunch of really fucking annoying parts thrown in, too), but something felt off.  There was a personality that I liked about the first Resistance that just felt absent in this game.  The game, overall, did a poor job of conveying that sense of fifties Americana or making me feel like I'm defending the country from an alien invasion that's looking more and more hopeless (and in fact, I think Fallout 3 did a WAY better job of conveying that sense of Americana despite taking place centuries into the future).  It still managed to be fun and in some ways was a better experience than the first game, but it was a tonal and creative step backwards in a lot of ways too.  I think Resistance Retribution has done a much better job of capturing what I liked about the first Resistance, and that's kind of strange.

Haven't tried the multiplayer yet, though.

Great review!

I agree with everything you said, Vinny.

I just started playing Res2 and find the SP to be lacking. The lack of Weapon Wheel from RFoM being my biggest complaint so far.

Co-op is amazing. Haven't tried out competitive yet though.

I found the story to be very easy to follow and quite compelling, especially upon picking up some intel.  Then again, game reviewers tend to like story that's handed to them on a plate, a la Final Fantasy XXL: The Predictable, so maybe I'm just different.

Excellent review. To those who say it's too harsh, I can say whole-heartedly that I regret buying the game new from gamestop because although it's fun the single player doesn't warrant a $60 purchase. Vinny was spot on regarding much of the single player experience (those damned chameleons really chafed me as well) and even more accurate regarding the multiplayer. Although multiplayer comes with a bit of a learning curve, once you hit your stride you can easily miss appointments or meals promising to yourself "just one more round".

Keep  up the great work Vinny!

I have not played my copy yet, but I sure hope that the solo campaign is not as bad as you all say.  as far as the coop goes, hopefully it will make up for all the solo game's shortcomings. Having played the first and loving it, I am still looking forward to playing it for a long time to come...

"Resistance 2 has a rubbish single-player campaign"
Way harsh

I dont get the consistency in reviews? This games single player has been pushed towards the negative level because of the story? Look at Gears of War 1. Crap story. Awesome reviews. I dont get it.

Holy crap, where did all these System-Wars-y people come from!?! I thought Giant Bomb was a place of peace and tranquility!

Meanwhile, 8 player co-op sounds like more fun than a triple-decker sex sandwich.

@deadgopher

I played Res 2 tonight for 45 minutes and thought it lookd far worse than the original. Everything is aliased, the water streams in the underwater level are PS2 quality and it took me a while to figure out why everything didn't look right and then it occurred to me - nothing casts a shadow. There are no dynamic shadows anywhere. Maybe because I just finished Gears 2 but this game looks like a poor cousin of the first one and not even near the level of other first tier games on the PS3.

I won't even get into why the Chimera in the beginning have the same upgrades as the "7 years later" versions when it takes place exactly where the first left of. In that first level the weapons and Chimera should be exactly the same as the first game.

My God. Why is it that I've only found ONE reviewer in the entire world (gameplayer.com.au) that doesn't think this game's visuals shit butterflies?

RESISTANCE 2 LOOKS LIKE SHIT.

Every website on the face of the earth praises this game for looking incredible, merely mentioning "small graphical glitches which are forgivable due to the scale of the game." I'm glad to see GiantBomb hasn't been spewing any of this fanboy tripe (which is the ONLY reason I can think of, as the same site that the above (paraphrased) quote is from gave The Last Guy a 9 out of 10), but, what's the deal? I feel like God of War with the soft shadowing, "Here let me put some Vasoline on your TV" bullshit is going on all over again.

Why aren't there more gamers and journalists that can clearly see that Resistance 2's visuals (and gameplay, but that's a whole different beast) are simply not close to the quality that Fallout 3 and especially Gears of War 2 have to offer? Even Resistance 1 looks better than this. Playing that game for 30 minutes doesn't put the health of my eyesight into question.

It makes me so angry. Can you tell?

This game should of been called Resistance 1.5

Adding a co op mode and 20 extra players and they call if a sequel?

Not to mention the multiplayer was garbage

Skirmish is just a knock off of BF2 conquest minus the fun

and the co op literally looks like a playstation 2 game

This game deserves a 3 out of 5

It isnt a bad game
Its just incredibly average

@ Keeng and the gaming community in general:

Please stop trying to apply maths to review scores. Of course things get weird when you try to compare creative efforts numerically. Games are easier to assess objectively than something like a painting, but ultimately the scores reviews assign to them will always be nothing more than a guide. Sure, they provide a rough comparison between games, but if you try to quantify quality you're fighting a losing battle. What does "20 percent better" even mean? Twenty percent of what? This is why some sites avoid numerical scores. It's not just an aesthetic thing; it's to try to work around the audience's preconceptions about what the numbers mean. There is no such thing as a twenty percent difference in quality, and a difference of one star does not signify that. What it signifies is that the reviewer of one game thought that game was good and the reviewer of another game thought that game was great. If you need to know more than that, read the reviews and assess for yourself.

Sorry, that came across more snarky than I intended. I just think people who keep trying to analyse things in this way are wasting their time. Sometimes scores are weird and I disagree with them, but whatever. I don't read anything into it, other than the fact that GameSpot gave Perfect Dark Zero a higher score than PaRappa the Rapper. That's just plain fucked up. EXCEPTION TO THE RULE, SHUT UP.

The AI in the single player was disapointing. I could care less on whether a story is oscar worthy as long as the AI is good, but when the baddies are blind to every good guy on the map but me it just ruins the whole experience for me. At least the multiplayer is great!

I love how anyone not thinking this is Game of the Year material is a MS fanboy or Sony hater.

It's better than the last one, but since the last one was mediocre, an improvement was not hard to come by.

Hmm... I'm not a huge fan of the PS3 controller for shooters anyway.  Resistance 1 was a bit underwhelming and it looks like this is where this franchise and I part ways.  Pity.  Multiplayer sounds excellent for those into it though.  Great review Vinny.

In the beta I've been finding the competitive multiplayer unsatisfying post-CoD4 (it might also have something to do with my being terrible at it), but the co-op is really satisfying. I'm looking forward to spending most of my time on that. It's really great to feel like you're performing a distinct and important role in a group without actually having to join some sort of clan or something. I'm sure being in an organized clan would help, but the classes are well-defined enough that it's pretty clear what you should be doing. Another plus is that I like being a medic, one of my friends likes being a soldier, and another likes being special ops. I'm sure we'll mix it up occasionally, but I'm hoping we'll all get good at our respective roles and become a CHIMERA DESTRUCTION UNIT.

I know review is all about opinion but this is the first I've heard about the single player being "rubbish". Sure most other sites have mentioned it is an entry into the excellent multiplayer components but still... wow. I look forward to hearing more about this on the podcast because you sound super-harsh.

I think that this 5 star scoring system is showing it's age, it is obvious that Insomniac knew the ps3 needed a AAA multiplayer shooter besides Call of Duty 4 which is multiplatform. This game offers a lot in that area and who cares about single player this days??, Resistance:Fall of Man suffered from the same impersonal uncompelling single player campaign and its sequel improves in every aspect, graphics, mp, scale and keeps short in the sp, so what??, its sp is more like a plus, not the main feature. I don't even have a ps3 but this game seems to be a great deal, even Warhawk which only had mp received the same AA score, this game is giving you some form of sp, and not a horrible one, an average one, but i think you are giving it too much importance, come on 60 player mayhem without frame drops or lag, that's awesome.

Its not a bad shooter for the platform but still only gets 3 stars from me.

Crappy single player and badly told story. Boring guns and lack of polish.
I've seen and played a LOT worse.

Worth a play, maybe rental. Certainly not a purchase with everything else out at the moment.

Great review. I was expecting a lot more originality out of the single player in this game but it was a complete retread of every other shooter, mostly Halo 3 complete with Halo's many faults, imo.

well..a game should be balanced..can't have a good multiplayer portion of the game and neglect the single player..not everyone plays multiplayer..thats the sad thing single player games tend to be way short these days

i agree it deserves a 5 though the mp player alone is worth 5 stars.

so i just finished the game last night, after reading this review, i have to say i am on board with most of your points, i do disagree about the single player being that bad, i felt they did they what the set out to , excellent and entertaining game play, and jaw-dropping visuals, i definitely think the campaign is worth a play through (not for the story, but for the game play and visuals) and sure insomniac could have tried to implement a stronger story telling aspect, but truthfully it would have been the same uninteresting aliens vs human story we have seen in games like halo and gears,so i was not any type of orgiinal or engaging story,  for me a 4.5 sounds right, though its easy to see why those who were expecting a deep story from this game are disappointed
