Quick Look: Cryostasis

Btw for any of you hoping to run this - this has steeper requirements than Crysis (as with a lot of games nowadays, but most people aren't aware). 

Has lot of good concepts like rolling monsters but it needed lots and lots of polishing which you can't expect from a Russian game.

I sincerely doubt that as my 7800GT with Core2Duo e6400 couldn't always get the smoothest framerates in that game, nor could Intel 820D with the 7800GT for that matter and my older P4 overclocked to 3.4ghz certainly never delivered smooth gameplay in STALKER with the DX9 lighting enabled.   Did you go to the ADVANCED menu settings and turn them all up?  I'm betting your view distance was middling and you were running using the DX8.1 lighting setup - which is what STALKER defaults to on p4 based systems.  The DX8.1 lighting model is a lot less demanding and flies like the proverbial off the shovel.  Also, your p4 system is far too slow for most modern games from HL2 : Episode 2 onwards - most of which are multi-core enabled. "

I came so close to buying Cryostasis so many times during this year but could never bring myself to do it. Still fighting it back...

Everything is better with a PPSh-41.  The other gun looked like an SVT-40, although it seemed a bit off, the mag looked a little big.  I've seen this on clearance at Target for $18, maybe I'll pick it up. "

I tried this game and it's not bad. The first portion of the game however is very slow and boring but it gets interesting later on.

Dave should play PENUMBRA.

Most things were adequately explained sometime in the game.

If they couldn't figure out WHY these things are happening, then they're not paying attention, or can't understand something that isn't screamed at them through a radio and topped off with a "WE'RE OSCAR MIKE!!"

I should mention I have a 19" flat screen CRT monitor, so my resolutions aren't that high 1024/768. STALKER ran better with Float32 installed, but the distance was on high with high textures and everything enabled. HL2: Episode 2 I had to back down a little, but it still looked really good and ran well with HDR turned on and everything on medium to high, but no AA or AF. "

I couldn't even make it through the demo. Too hard.

Which version of Float32 exactly?  It remained largely in beta even after being accepted into one of the later STALKER patches.  Float32's performance varied wildly, sometimes increasing IQ and eating frames while at other times eating IQ (such as the shadows completely disappearing at certain angles from the camera) and increasing frames.  re : HL2 EP2 'everything on medium to high' is a rather ambiguous statement as is 'looked really good and ran well', were shaders AND textures on high?  I'm not trying to get into an argument at all, so please don't be offended, I'm just trying to understand how you achieved your level of performance with your current setup.  Certainly, it is true that 1024x768 being a 4:3 (widescreen res'ns drag between 15% to 30% more performance overhead when compared to their 4:3 equivalents) and baseline PC resolution isn't going to be much of drain on your GPU and/or CPU in terms of pixel pushing but the 256MB of GDRAM should've definitely affected your performance on the shader processing side of things. "
