Did anyone else catch in one of the acrobatic menus it said something along the lines of "by holding L3...." I wasn't aware that PC's had L3 buttons XD.

I'm amazed they didn't think to block "B4tm4n". Star Wars Galaxies had intelligent filters to prevent things like "Luuk Skywocker" and it's positively ancient. But make no mistake, whilst I'm amazed, I am also DELIGHTED. Seeing them get away with calling their dude "B4tm4n" made my day.

I've got to stop letting myself believe every MMO will be different. I alwas get really excited, right  through the character creation process and all the way up until the time I see it being played, when I remember "Oh yeah, it's an MMO. MMOs play like crap". Someone make an MMO that plays exactly like Freelancer. I'd play the shit out of that* - hell, I already played the shit out of actual Freelancer (online and off).

*Nobody say EVE. First person who says EVE is an idiot and clearly never played Freelancer properly.

The real question with an action MMO is latency. If the servers can keep up with what's going on, the gameplay looks promising but... terrible, terrible UI. Too much clunk in here. And menus cover the whole screen! The game isn't pausing y'know, we might have to see what's going on.

That said, I'm half interested in the PS3 version, but the PC version would be infuriating. Just depends how well the buttons are mapped I suppose. The PC config isn't encouraging.

PC version plays just like the other one with a 360 controller. Which is pretty well. I'm really enjoying this whole MMO action game take they have going on. It does work.

But let me be clear, this game on a keyboard and mouse is not ideal. Think playing God of War on a keyb and mouse. There are tons of combos where you need to tap a button twice then hold another one, then trigger+button and stuff like that. This is NOT an RPG by any means...

But yeah, with a controller, this works pretty well as a multiplayer brawler, both on PS3 and PC. Except for movement powers. Movement powers are frustrating in this, making you stick to every stupid surface, like lampposts and benches. Fliers are ok, I guess.

For the record, the voice acting gets waaaaay better once you leave the tutorial part.  The only shitty voice acting I've seen is brainiacs bad guys.

" I've heard a lot of negative feedback about this game, and I'm honestly kinda surprised. I've played for about twelve hours now, and so far, I like it. Don't get me wrong, it has it's flaws. Jeff was on the money when he mentioned some of the reads being flat in this week's happy hour, but for the most part, the voice work is great. Mark Hamill makes a great Joker, and there's a lot of other great talent in this game. The rest of the audio (sfx, music) is jank as hell.   The gameplay is enjoyable - unlike most MMO's I feel like I'm actually fully in control of what's going on during combat. Everything is still determined by "dice rolls" behind the scenes, but outwardly, the game carries a more action based feel.   My one big complaint is the menu system. Clearly, the menus were designed for the PS3, which I guess is fine, if you're playing it on a PS3, but on the PC, it just doesn't work.   Overall, the game is fun, but like most MMO's it's going to take a few patches before it's really polished.  "
Yeah, I have the same sort of viewpoint. Maybe if the price goes down, gets patched up, and gets rid of the subscription fee, I'll buy it in the future.

Most of the negative feedback is coming from people who haven't played it anyway (which happens with every game release on the internet) and Jeff has very specific tastes, so it was obvious he wouldn't like this game from the get-go. The worst thing about this game is the chat window and profanity filter, but that can be fixed with a patch. I agree the interface could definitely use some work as well. Everything else is stellar and it's a really fun game. I didn't even know about this game until 3 days ago when I saw it on Steam and bought it straight away because it looked neat. I don't regret the purchase.

No, *every* character has both melee and ranged attacks, regardless of the option. Rifle just skins it as a gun. If you go to the menu there is a combo list that unlocks as you allocate points to the skills tab and it mixes up melee and ranged attacks.

It was a mistake in that it was misleading. They were playing as if the rifle was a weapon, when it's just a skin for the ranged side of combat (of course, different stats and effects for each attack, but the core system is the same with or without the gun) and they were pointing and clicking at stuff as a result, when that's not the way the basic set of attacks works.

So at no point during the QL did they fight people the way you're supposed to fight people in this game as a result of being confused by the fact that you can give your character model a gun but the game will still play as a brawler. Eventually you unlock tap versus hold combos. My character can choose between tap-tap-hold X, which does a lot of damage to a single enemy, or tap X-hold Y, which does AOE, or tap X-hold X, which does knockdown, so you have to choose the right combo for each situation. There are even air juggles in this thing.

It's what happens when they "go in cold". They can't stop to read every menu for fifteen minutes while we wait, so if they don't immediately "get" the game, the QL can paint a really unfair picture. I would prefer to wait a couple of hours for whoever is going to review it to play through every tutorial and understand what he's doing and then restart if needed, because I don't feel this helped anybody make an informed decision about whether or not the game is worth playing for them unless they are already playing it.It was the equivalent of people who keep tapping the autoattack button in WoW.

Thanks for the detailed reply, Noel. Having not really paid attention to this game since I'm not an MMO kind of guy  usually,  none of that was readily apparent until I started reading these comments and put them together  with that combos menu that Vinny viewed momentarily. If it fleshes out over time, that actually sounds pretty rad. That and the traversal stuff sounds like a great time, as someone who played Crackdown and Prototype to completion.

And I agree with your assessments, both of you. The Giant Bomb staff can probably get away with 'going in cold' with a Call of Duty or a Street Fighter or what have you; things that are known quantities. In this case, however, I am coming to the conclusion that both the game and the viewers were done something of a disservice.

I had forgotten about this game for some time. I was a fan of City of Heroes many years back, but as with many it was more fun to create a character then actually playing the game long term. I have heard this title is switching to a free to play model very soon? If so I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

You must be thinking of Champions Online, made by the guys who did the CoH/CoV games. It's free-to-play starting the 25th.

@NoelVeiga: But the combat system is only part of the game. So they went into WOW and pressed the auto attack button, ok. We still got to see the rest of the world, see the menus, the over all interface, the enemies, some story, etc. etc.

There's no problem with going into it "cold" like this. You obviously like the game a lot, you fee like it was given a disservice, but as a viewer who hasn't played the game I saw everything I needed to.

Well, I would disagree.

The interface makes perfect sense if you use a controller, the team seemed dumbfounded by it because they were using a keyboard and mouse. It was a missed opportunity to help the viewers, though, because many people playing are equally confused by the size of stuff and the amount of quickslots, so figuring out that the PC version not only supports but prefers a controller would have fixed an oversight of the developers.

Sure, the voice acting is what it is (although they also were very confused about Kevin Conroy being in the game at one point), the story is flat to nonexistent and people got a good look at Gotham in-game (which, really, looks pretty cool), but if I had gone by the QL I wouldn't have bought it. I'm not in the business of paying routinely for a game that doesn't play well.

And here's the thing, I'm not an activist towards the game at all. It is what it is. I can also tell you that it's short on content and people have capped it already and are waiting for the promised monthly content drops. I can tell you that PvP leads to massive ganking, which is not for everybody. I can tell you that the mission design is good, but nowhere near WoW. And yeah, if you play WoW maybe you want to wait, or pay for the Steam version, play the free month and go back to that.

I don't mind those things, they are all true and should be mentioned in a review so that people can decide if this is worth their money. If the impression that you get about how the game plays is not true, not just incomplete but actually opposite to what the game is, though, I don't see how that gives you everything you need to see.

I was fortunate in that a friend of mine gave me his buddy key.  Very different MMO, more like an action game than anything else.  Really enjoying it so far.  And I agree with the others, the value of this QL is strictly in the entertainment.  :-)

So is this worse than APB?

APB had an awesome character creator and wicked dance emotes. This seems pretty restricted in both areas.
