Profile
Sindel is a character in the Mortal Kombat series that first appeared in Mortal Kombat 3. She is the queen of Edenia and mother of Kitana, but for a time was also rendered undead and served as the wife of Shao Kahn. Following her first appearance in the series, she would later reappear in Mortal Kombat: Deception and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
Story
Sindel in MK3Sindel served as the queen of Edenia some ten thousand years before the events of the first Mortal Kombat. A benevolent woman and wife to the Edenian King Jerrod and mother of Princess Kitana, she was captured when Shao Kahn's forces invaded from Outworld. In the end, Jerrod was killed, and Sindel was forced to marry Shao Kahn. Unwilling to accept this fate, she kills herself.
Following Shang Tsung's failure in the first Mortal Kombat, Shao Kahn uses Sindel's death as an opportunity. With the aid of the Netherrealm god Shinnok, Kahn has Sindel restored to life in Earthrealm. Shao Kahn is thus able to cross into Earthrealm himself in order to claim Sindel and form a connection between Earth and Outworld. Upon her resurrection, Sindel is put under mind control and believes herself to be Shao Kahn's loyal wife.
However, Kahn's victory over Sindel is short-lived. Following his defeat at the hands of Earth's warriors, Shao Kahn is forced to retreat to Outworld. During this time, Kitana is able to find her mother and break the mind control holding Sindel under Shao Kahn's sway. Shao Kahn's defeat also separates Edenia from Outworld, allowing Sindel to reclaim the throne.
However, before Sindel can do much to restore her power, Tanya, the daughter of an Edenian ambassador, betrays Edenia to a Netherrealm army led by Shinnok. Sindel is subsequently captured and held prisoner until Shinnok and his forces are driven out. Once freed, she and Kitana broker an alliance with the Shokan people and wage war against Shao Kahn.
Following the events of Deadly Alliance, Sindel's plans are disrupted by the awakening of the Dragon King Onaga. After Kitana and the other warriors are killed and brought back to life as Onaga's servants, Onaga manages to conquer Edenia, and once again Sindel is held prisoner in her own dungeon, this time with her own daughter Kitana serving as her prison guard. However, she is rescued by Jade, and the two flee to Outworld.
In Mortal Kombat (2011), Queen Sindel is forced to marry Shao Kahn when he conquers her home world of Edenia. In an attempt to prevent Shao Kahn from conquering the Earthrealm, she sacrifices her life to create a magical barrier to prevent him from setting foot within its boundaries. However, Shao Kahn finds a way to resurrect the dead Sindel and put her under his control, thus dissolving the magical barrier. Following the death of Motaro, Shao Kahn takes Shang Tsung's soul and infuses Sindel with its power. She is then sent to attack the hideout of Raiden's chosen warriors. The fighters, already weakened by a Lin Kuei attack, are completely unprepared, as Raiden had left to plead his case to the elder gods. As a result, Sindel massacres the remaining warriors aligned with Earthrealm, and Kitana's pleas to her brainwashed mother fall on deaf ears. Sindel dies when Nightwolf sacrifices himself, taking his own life in order to kill her.
Endings
Original Concept Art by John TobiasSindel has visions of her past as the queen of Edenia, her daughter Kitana, and her true husband, Jerrod. Having rediscovered the truth, the mind control over her is broken, and she defeats Shao Kahn, freeing Earth and Edenia, paving the way for a reunion with Kitana.
Sindel and Jade travel to Outworld and find an open sarcophagus holding Onaga's original body in a tomb covered in Edenian hieroglyphics. In translating them, Sindel discovers an incantation meant to transfer Onaga's soul back into his original body. Onaga then emerges, but rather than face both Sindel and Jade himself, ensuring an easy victory, he tries to toy with them by setting Kitana against them. While Jade holds off Kitana, Sindel plunges her weapon into Onaga's corpse and recites the spell. Under the spell's power, Onaga's soul is forced from Reptile's body and back into his own. However, Sindel's blade prevents his heart from properly reforming, and he is killed.
Upon defeating Blaze, Sindel receives godlike power, which she uses to resurrect her husband Jerrod. Together, Sindel, Kitana, and Jerrod form the Triad of the Just in order to protect the realms from further harm by Kahn-like tyrants.
