Cryptic rescues Star Trek Online from development hell. Set phasers to "cautious optimism."

LFG Kahn run
LFG Kahn run
If you've been following the drama and rumor-mongering around Star Trek Online the last few months, you aren't the least bit surprised that City of Heroes house Cryptic Studios confirmed today it's picking up the project's reins. My first question is whether Cryptic is using any of the art assets and design work already completed by Perpetual, or starting over from scratch. (Not surprisingly, they don't address this in the sparse announcement.) The latter option is probably the better option, though that won't please anybody who wanted to play the game this decade.

The screenshots they released don't really scream "Star Trek" at me. A nice Bird of Prey or Ensign Redshirt in there would've tickled the old nostalgia a little bit better than that one lonely starbase does. The rest of it looks kinda generic sci-fi. I'm ready to believe Cryptic can do a good job with this, though; they definitely proved their MMO chops with City of Heroes, and I think all four of us were pretty impressed with the E3 showing of Champions Online, their other MMO.

I'm curious to see how they design an MMO around a heavily regimented military organization like Starfleet. Does everyone start out as an ensign? Do you have to sit at ops for a few hours to level up? Maybe a starship will function like a guild, with the ship's captain acting as guild leader. Will you be able to play as a Klingon or Romulan? Will Kronos and Romulus be those races' starting zones? Can you go all privateer and get your own ship so you can tool around the galaxy at your leisure? Most importantly, Kahn will be like the final raid boss, right?

Somewhere in my recent past there's an 18-month-long, World of Warcraft-shaped hole where my life was supposed to go, so I'm wary of ever touching an MMO again. But Star Trek, the license, is too close to my heart; I can't resist giving this one a try. Cryptic is saying they'll be showing video and talking more about the game at a big Star Trek convention in a couple weeks, so you intrepid wiki editors can poise yourself to cram all that new info into the Star Trek Online page when the time comes.

Star Trek hasn't a good game in forever. I just don't think the property works well with action-oriented games. The Raven Q3-engine games were not too bad, but in general I don't have high hopes for the series.

Birth of the Federation was good, until you got to about turn 300 and everything slowed down to a crawl.

The site says you play as either Federation or Klingon, which already sounds a bit disappointing since those two super-powers are diplomatically buddy-buddy with each other.

Being an avid CoH player, I'm much more into the idea of the Champions Online MMO, but I find the idea of Cryptic running the Enterprise an interesting choice. Star Trek, quite frankly, needs much more variety in how you play it than City of Heroes needs or has. In a superhero-themed MMO, at least it makes sense for pretty much the entire game to revolve around your spandex-wearing main pounding guys into the dirt.

But Star Trek is much more than that. I think Cryptic learned a lot from their tenure on City of Heroes & Villains and it shows if you look at the development of Champions Online. I think that the entire process behind designing a Star Trek MMO should be entirely different than designing a superhero one. While I've enjoyed Cryptic's work, I'm not sure that familiar with a formula that can accentuate such a different style.

Perhaps I'm not giving them their due credit, but I can't really get too excited about the thought of a Star Trek MMO from the guys that have only superhero-themed games under their MMO-laden utility belts.

for this to work they would need either of 2 things [ preferably both ] one.. the most original idea for an mmo to date that would make great use of the star trek universe... and/or gigantic reserve of cash and manpower to make every idea they come up with " or steal from other mmo's " work perfectly..

if they don't they going to have allot of angry Star Trek fans out there.

Cryptic is probably the most suited developer for a star trek game. Could be awesome but i'll have to refrain my optimism.

Shoot... I LOVE ME SOME STAR TREK, but I hate the fact that it's going to be an MMO... (I just don't have enough time for those)... It's been YEARS since a decent ST game (Or movie, for that matter, but JJ might take care of that next year)... I SO WANTED Star Trek Legacy to be a cool space battle simulator, but it sucked in 5 different dimensions, I think... Anyway, I will keep an eye out for this...

Hmm.. one problem is how wil they handle all the history and the material. Will you be able to travel all over the known univers in Star Trek? I mean, how can they justify quests where you go to war? I know, I'm a fanboy.. but in Star Trek, you can't use kill someone or destroy something. It is not how it works. Do they really want to open a Federation-Klingon-Romulan conflict again? Or invent new evil races?

I wonder if they will use sort level up style use in starfelt academy  game. Where you start of with one of the low class ships and work your way to a ship the size of the enterprise by completing missions.

I have high hopes for this game, the potential for greatness is very high. It seems that space combat will play a major part in the game, hopefully there are PVP servers where you can participate in large battles. I'm also curious as to what races will be playable in the game. Sure there will be the Federation but what else? Would anyone else be interested in playing as the Borg? I' am, it would be a very unique experience.

It'll be interesting to see how this works out. Another similar MMO is of course Stargate Worlds - less starships, but still having existing military like heirarchies and being based around space exploration. Of course, Trek Online has the potential to reach an even bigger fanbase than SGW, then again... look at Star Wars Galaxies...[cliché] the bigger they come, the harder they fall. [/cliché]

Here's hoping it doesn't suck!

I'm with you Brad, while I never touched WoW for those reasons, this is the one MMORPG I would ever think of touching. I can't wait to see what they do! They should take some lessons from EVE Online to see what works there and what could be improved and how they can adapt it to a Star Trek friendly concept.

You can see why  a number of companies have tried and failed with it. It is a big IP, massive in fact and an mmo of this would be massive and Brad is right in regard to just how you go with it but you got so many good options what do you go for?

For me they have to have some form of levelling, if your federation through the academy etc. For me what would work is guilds would form but your guild leader is your captain but as a guild you would have to prove yourself ( a bit like how guilds will work in WAR) and then get your ship. If a Klingon this could be through combat trials etc, federation would be missions of some sort and then if the guild completes this they get hold of a ship but then of course you take orders and to keep the ship and your rank or more you got to do missions etc. The big wigs of the federation would be the game developers / npc's. And I think I would like to see you be able to go rogue and get your own ship, kit it out how you want and do what you want. Of course you may not get say the cheap or free upgrades as you would in the federation but then you would not have to do regular missions to keep them but then you could do raids.
There has to be planets for away missions, starbases you can go in and commerce etc and there has to be ship to ship battles and then full inside ship moddles and if the shields are down you should be able to board things.
Some races should be there but not playable, the borg for example could be about and appear now and again, say trying to attack earth with a cube where people have to mass to attack them. See a sphere? You could try boarding it and die a lot....

A million and one cool things you could do to make it good but your most likely going to get all the easy and less interesting stuff done.

I would have prefered, if you would play as a crew member, rather than the captain of the entire ship. You could starte as an ensign, attend Academy, get assigned to a ship and level up to become a commanding officer. There could be plenty of chorse to tread the grindmill aboard the ship as well as on landing missions.
You could even have instances, where your ship is in a battle, and depending on your position you'd maybe had to repair something on the ship, fight of intruders, board the enemy ship, and so on.

That would have been awesome ...

I am a huge Star Trek-fan, and I am still looking forward to this one. Especially as it's eventually coming to X360. But I am not stoked about, what's been revealed so far....

I was following this back when Perpetual were working on it, but I didn't exactly have high hopes, although they did have some pretty neat ideas.  Cryptic are at least a developer I think we can trust, so it'll be interesting to see how this works out.  Apparantly, they're going to be showing a lot of the game off at the Star Trek convention in August.

If it turns out to be good, this is one MMO I wouldn't mind paying the monthly fee for.
