Some ballyhoo was made recently about Gearbox's long-silent loot-driven shooter Borderlands and the new, slightly more cartoon-like visual style it suddenly reappeared with. Publisher 2K put out a handful of new screenshots today showing off more of this new style.

Personally, I'm all for this aesthetic shift; it's usually a good idea for games in crowded genres to carve out a unique identity any way they can (though, Borderlands already had somethin' goin' on with that whole million-possible-guns thing). These shots look great, though I really want to see the game in motion (and play it) before making any real value judgements. Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford had this comment on the change, which doesn't really tell you much of anything, other than that we'll (probably (hopefully)) see more of Borderlands soon (read: at E3).

“This month, PC Gamer’s cover story reveals the bold look and design of Borderlands,” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software.  “Since the story broke, the response to Borderlands we’ve felt has been overwhelming and I cannot thank everyone enough for the support of the game they’ve shown.  We realize that curiosity about Borderlands is pretty high and so we’re releasing more screenshots today that we hope you enjoy.  We are excited to show more about the game soon.  Thanks again for your support.”

For the sake of comparison, here's a taste of what Borderlands used to look like before Gearbox went and changed things up.

What do you think about the change, looking at the two versions side by side? I'd definitely lean toward the new one; previously, the game looked a bit generic.

hmmm...interesting.  hopefully they have only changed the look of the game and not the gameplay.  if i remember right isn't this game supposed to have like 2-4 player co-op for the entire game?

I like it. It makes the things that are important pop out more from the enviroments. Sort of Crackdown style.

well...even outside of PC Gamer, there's still no image of it being in First Person, i have to see it like that before i know whether i like the new art-style or not...sadly.

Screenshots of the old version make a bad impression of how it looked. This is how it looked aaaaaages ago. I thought it was great:

I have to see this or a similar video to judge if I like the new style more, or if I would prefer they improved the old look, but it's looking promising.

Really disappointed. I liked it a lot more before, especially since following it through various gameplay videos they released. Seriously disappointed with this cell shaded approach.

I guess it really depends now on what it looks like in motion and if they still maintain the neat engine with tonnes of randomly generated weapons (and if it's still an FPS?).

I like the new look better. It gives the game a much more interesting air that would make me want to pick it up in the first place.

I think it's pretty cool, I just wish their black outlines were a bit thinner.

Either would have worked, but the new style is more expressive.  Realistic can be expressive too, but it tends to demand a lot more on the engine.  With expressive, you get exaggerated lines that do the work for you and evoke feeling without nearly as much effort as getting EXACT facial expressions which, in a first person shooter, probably aren't that vital.

It's an improvement, definitely.  It gives it a very Prince of Persia look, and definitely makes what could have just been "good" visuals better.

The new look kind of looks like Crackdown.

The old look kind of looks like Fallout 3 mixed with Unreal Tournament 3 which to me is kind of meh.

Looks like a change for the better in general. Prefer the old rhino though.

And I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the stylized JSRF-ish characters over the old Mad Max-ish ones....

Hmmm this looks a little too much like the latest PoP to me, although not quite as crisp. I dunno, if they can make the animations in a shooter as clean as they were in PoP, might take a second look at this. Been a while since I've heard anything

Looks like a better looking Crackdown.  I am all for it, I loved the style Crackdown had and this looks like they took that and spent a few more years fine tuning it.  Love it and now am totally interested in this game, didn't even know all about it before.  It sounds like loads of fun.

For me they could have gone either way with the graphical style. I don't think one style is drastically better then the other.

Just looks like they added a black edge-render to the exsisting art style. Maybe the shadows are a little cel-shadey but IMO this ain't no biggy. Looks good! characters are more defined gives it that POP!

Holy Crap! I love the new Borderlands graphical makeover. Reminds me a bit of Crackdown, except  more detailed. I think it reflects much better the unique alien setting. The old version looked kinda  ho-hum, more of the same, but this  visual overhaul has me eagerly anticipating it's release. Let's hope it plays as sweet as it looks.

the old one on the far right looks sweet, but the rest just look like any other generic game out. I personally love the new look. Its just a right mix of cel-shade and real life. Def gonna have to keep and eye out on this game.

I want to see it in motion. But judging from the pictures, I think they made a wise decision. It sets itself apart from all the generic shooters we see every year. That's just gotta be a good thing.

I like it, though it kinda looks like they just blurred the textures a bit and added some post-processing effects.
