You've been waiting years for it, and now the day is here: Final Fantasy VII is available on the PlayStation 3. Happy? What's that? You wanted a remake? Oh, sorry. Keep waiting!

In all seriousness, Square Enix has dropped Final Fantasy VII International--the improved version of the game that came out in Japan some time after the U.S. release--as a download on the Japanese version of the PlayStation Network. The game will run you around $15, if you live in Japan or feel like setting up a Japanese account in another territory.

Not the shiny new remake Square teased a few years ago, but perhaps a (tiny) step closer? We shall see. News and image shamelessly borrowed from Kotaku.

#5 Posted by DECA555 (400 posts) -

i wanted a remake as well. This is alright. I already have FF7 on my PSP.

#6 Edited by FCKSNAP (2299 posts) -

Well, it's the international version. So you can play it if you end up buying it. But why would you pay $15 bux? oh wait, it's Square, and Sony charges publishers per gigabyte.

#7 Posted by Nyro (79 posts) -

They really really really really really need to bring more ps1 games to NA PSN.

#8 Posted by Karmum (11517 posts) -

We need this on the US PSN Marketplace, so I can play it on my PSP.

#9 Posted by Rio (592 posts) -

still have my original copy I got back in 1997,  I'll stick to playing that when I want my fix.

#10 Posted by Lolzhacked (84 posts) -

Hmm, I wonder how long this will take to hit on the US psn store, I might be willing to pay 15$ to play that game again... that is only a might though >.<

#11 Posted by Berkie (132 posts) -

I think they should remake the game, I would buy it.

#12 Posted by jakob187 (21642 posts) -

FF7 = bleck.  FF6 = GOD!!!

#13 Posted by Lashe (1244 posts) -

Jesus Brad man, it's 2.18 AM - excitement of a potential PS3 remake of FFVII is waaaay too much at this time =P

Great news nonetheless though =]

#14 Posted by FlipperDesert (2081 posts) -

Unless they release a remake, I'll stick to the PC version and a ton of mods.

TEASE!

Luckily I don't have a PS3 so I can resist the draw of this announcement.

#17 Posted by shadows_kill (3165 posts) -

#18 Posted by StarFoxA (5138 posts) -

All I need now is Chrono Cross.

#19 Posted by Hector (3354 posts) -

YOu got me good!

#20 Posted by GhostStrykre (17 posts) -

perhaps this is a way of square enix testing the waters to see how well received a ff7 remake might be... if this is the case, it seems to be a horrid idea since most of us still have our copies of the original or something.
just cuz i love the game tho i'll prolly download it when it comes to the North American PSN. we will see.

#21 Posted by IMTHEONEKILLINU (75 posts) -

Bring it to the U.S., and I'm in.

#22 Posted by kennybaese (658 posts) -

Here's to hoping that they bring it to the US. I think that Americans like this game more than the people in Japan.

If not, I'll just borrow the damn thing from a friend and play in on disc.

#23 Posted by Milkman (16514 posts) -

I really don't see the point...

#24 Posted by 8bitgeorge (15 posts) -

I almost cried when I believed it was a remake, officialy! I was phone in hand calling a friend to share the news, BUT YOU BROKE MY HEART BRAD!

#25 Edited by killdave (1073 posts) -

I play FF games normally once and once only . Great fun stories but why would you want to replay it on your sexy HD PS3?

I'd just buy the old game for pennies if I wanted it.

Edit - doh my PS3 isnt backwards compatible  :(

#26 Posted by TwoOneFive (9459 posts) -

lol, Atleast you admit to the shame Brad. haha

Square is saving the FF 7 remake as their "break glass in case of emergency" plan. If they're ever in financial straights, BOOM! Guaranteed cash by the truckloads.

I think that FF6 is better but, FF7 is still pretty awesome.
#29 Posted by Jimbo7676 (711 posts) -

They should make it. People would buy it.

#30 Posted by imayellowfellow (558 posts) -

but u can play it on ur fucking psp! (without homebrewing)

#31 Posted by DavidSnakes (675 posts) -

Do people still care about Final Fantasy?  It's a 90s relic, as far as I'm concerned.

#32 Posted by WilliamRLBaker (4777 posts) -

We likely wont see the international version released in EU or US.

#33 Posted by REDRUN (1410 posts) -

I would buy it to have it in my collection.

#34 Posted by Cloneslayer (1623 posts) -

People say all the FF haven't aged well, but thats only the case with 7. I played FF7 and hated it then a week later played FF8 and liked it.

#35 Posted by sixpin (1286 posts) -

I had hope... and then you killed it.

All PlayStation 3s are backward compatible with PS1 games.

If I remember correctly, the "International Version" is the U.S. version.  They released it later in Japan, because the US version had additional bosses like Ruby and Emerald Weapon.

I think most of the FF games have aged fairly well, because most of them have great artwork, music, stories, and characters.  The random battles get old, but I never liked them to begin with, even when I started playing the games.  Boss battles could be fun at times, because they involved the use of strategy, but most encounters got old quickly.  Building up your character on the other hand was pretty fun in most FF games.  I really hated FF2's (NES) system though.

#38 Posted by Lazyaza (2166 posts) -

Bah I haven't played a single ff game for longer than 10 minutes, I don't think I'll ever understand their appeal. I wish they'd just let the franchise die already and make something else, like a new Front Mission that ACTUALLY gets released here >_<

#39 Posted by radion_null (160 posts) -

I would've been excited if I didn't already have my original copy from '97

#40 Posted by Geno (6477 posts) -

Maybe this is like some sort of promo of the upcoming remake?

#41 Posted by kashif1 (1428 posts) -

this should hit us psn within a week, ill finally get to play it for the first time

Woo... hoo?

#44 Edited by CashBailey (799 posts) -

Screw this. Give us FF VIII, the single greatest game OF ALL TIME!!! Give us a next-gen Squall Lionheart, Rinoa Heartily, Zell, Irvine and Quistis...

They already did that bullshit, incomprehensible ADVENT'S CHILDREN crap.

#45 Posted by Ouroboros (344 posts) -

I have to drop my usual rant hammer on Final Fantasy 7 - I hate everyones obsession with it, both love and hate.  I personally dont like it, not necessarily hate it but it's clearly not TEH GREATEST FF EVER as most young'ings groom it to be.  The thing is though even that is my opinion, I grew in a world where I played video games and most other RPGs prior to 7 such as the previous 6 (or 3 on SNES) and they are way better.  However most people who swear by 7 only started with 7 and it's burned in their minds now, which is too bad.

#46 Posted by PapaLazarou (711 posts) -

Why do people want a remake of a game they loved so much in the past? When you go back and play old games they never hold up and remakes often go poorly wrong. Even if the remake is great the hardcore fans will always say the original was better so tbh noone wins.

I hope they never remake it.

#47 Posted by StaticFalconar (4849 posts) -

Honestly if they did remake it using a prettier graphics engine and essentially the same game play I'd still buy it.

#48 Posted by Kyle (2323 posts) -

I know it's cool to hate on the idea of an FFVII remake, but seriously, it would actually be worthwhile. For one thing, the English story is practically incomprehensible in spots because of its lackluster translation. Of course the translation is no where near as bad as the 80s and early 90s JRPGs, but it needs a lot of work. Most of the dialogue works, but all the stuff about "clones" and "calamities from the skies" needs serious clarification. Just ask the FFVII wikipedia entry if you don't believe me.
