GOTY 2014

So another year has passed and another Game of the Year list gets made. I had a lot of fun playing several games this year, however there were a ton of games that I really would have loved to play but just didn't get the chance to. Here are those games: The Banner Saga, Broken Age, Bravely Default, Jazzpunk, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Divinity: Original Sin, D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die, Massive Chalice, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Alien: Isolation, The Walking Dead: Season 2, Bayonetta 2, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Far Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, and The Crew. I wish I could have played all of these games because several of them surely would have been on this list. Sadly I must work with what I did play and at least I still played some fun games. So on with the list!

List items

  • This is it. My favorite game I've played all year. This game was challenging, rewarding, fun, frustrating, and just great. I loved exploring the deadly world it had to offer and be taught new lessons and dish some of my own out too. Getting new weapons, armor, rings, and magic was exhilarating and I'll never forget my time in Drangleic.

  • This was extremely close to taking the top spot. I had and am still having a lot of fun making my way through the basement trying to unlock everything and save Isaac. The ridiculous combinations of item you can pick up and make your character look incredibly gross it insane! I'll be right back, I gotta go play this now...

  • I never played this game when it came out. This was when I didn't care for Final Fantasy games. Holy crap did I miss out! I absolutely love this game, or games. Tidus may have an annoying voice and just plain be dumb, but all of the other characters were awesome and I just wanted to keep playing and playing. And the more fast-paced combat in the sequel was a nice change of pace that kept me on my toes in most fights. I can't say enough good things about this collection so I'll just end it here.

  • Destiny was a game I was looking forward to greatly. I think a lot of people were. And when it arrived, I played a crap-load of it. Even after I beat the game, I kept on playing. What cool weapons and armor would I get? What new content will I unlock? Unfortunately, not a lot. Most of the armor and weapons are just different skins with higher numbers. And that's disappointing. Playing through the exact same content over and over again gets old fast. I really wish there was more. Maybe the sequel will give us that. But all of this doesn't take away from the fact that for those first several hours, I was lost in another world having a ton of fun.

  • inFamous: Second Son was a very good looking game. I remember turning it on and just being wowed by how good it looked. Fortunately, it was fun to play as well. I completed everything and wished there was more. And that's the thing, I wish there was more. It was a short game that I completed pretty quickly. At least it was enjoyable.

  • Specifically the PS4 version. This was the first time I played it and I loved it! I had a lot of fun playing this sometimes frustrating game because I got to play a variety of characters with weird traits. I never beat it, or a single boss for that matter, but man was it fun.

  • I love the Telltale games. I have never heard of the Fables comics before this game. I love the idea of investigating a string of murders among fable characters. Being able to interact with Beast and wondering what Beauty is up to is so interesting and fun I don't want to put it down. Unfortunately, I haven't played a lot of this game due to certain time constraints. I know that if I did, this game would be a lot higher on my list.

  • Titanfall was a perfect example of how to make a multiplayer only game work. I did more cool impossible looking stuff in this game than any other I can remember. It actually made me want to say, "Xbox, record that!" Did it ever grow old? Of course it did. But I enjoyed my time with it and I'm sure I'll play it again.

  • Transistor is a beautiful looking game with fantastic music. I really love the music. It also has an interesting real-time/turn-based combat system that's pretty enjoyable. Combining different abilities was also fun just to see the outcome. I wish it wasn't so short or had even more to the gameplay to keep me engaged even after I beat it.

  • I didn't get to play a lot of this game since I got it pretty late this year, but I definitely see where it's going. Grinding and hopping around a good looking city shooting mutants with bizarre weapons is a ton of fun. It would probably be higher on the list if I spent more time with it, but at least it's on here.
