Gaming Trends that need to Die in 2010

Inventory Management/ Over Encumbrance

Nothing pulls me out of a game quicker than being stopped mid action to be told that I'm carrying to much equipment, it's a very jarring experience and something that I don't think needs to exist in modern gaming.

Let's take for example Dragon Age: Origins as a recent example of this. You're halfway through storming up some epic tower, killing ever enemy in site and looting all their corpses as you go until suddenly, your inventory is full. What do you do? Do you sit there and flick through every piece of equipment you have trying to pick out the weakest and worst to throw away? Do you do a U-turn and return to the nearest vender to try and get some free space and some extra cash? Or just plough on and ignore all the possibly great loot that could be yours?
The most relevant Image I could find :D
The most relevant Image I could find :D

The counter argument is that it adds an element of realism to the game, well I'd like to counter that by saying being able to carry 75 broadswords before hitting that weight limit is in no way realistic. It's simple a great way to artificially lengthen games and it shouldn't exist any more.

Preorder Bonuses

Pre Order Bonuses themselves are ok, but not when it seems to take away from the game.

A great example of this is the up coming Splinter Cell Conviction, according to a promotional video for the "Limited Collectors Edition the collectors edition (which can only be purchased from certian retailers, another thing that needs to die) contains exclusive weapons, clothing for the character and even an exclusive mode! That's like a 3rd of the fucking game!

Zombies

They want your brains... and a rest for a while.
They want your brains... and a rest for a while.
It's been said to death so I won't go on... but Zombies should take a break for a few years, kick back with a beer and come back fresh and exciting/scary in a few years time.

Wastelands / The Post Apocalypse

Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Borderlands, RAGE e.t.c
I don't want to see another eradiated empty area interspersed with small towns and buildings built out of old car parts/road signs/ or what ever other trash survives our inevitable doom for a while.

More to come soon maybe.

The limited inventory system can be annoying, but its not there for realism more so as just an intentional hinderance. It breaks it up a little, but no more than having to change tactics for your party members and or equipped new stuff mid-battle.

Zombies though i'm still not entirely bored of yet. Even with the absurd increase with its popularity over the past couple of years, I'm just too much of a fan. May the zombie apocalpyse never end I say!

I actually want a few more post-apocalyptic games, since every one I can think of to come out recently, besides Fallout 3, has been crummy. Actually... I guess I just want another Fallout game. I hope Vegas is actually good. I don't like Obsidian's track record.

Morality-It either needs to be vastly improved or abolished altogether
The whole "here's the good option and here's the bad option, youll get slightly different items and the end cut scene will be different depending on what you pick" is getting very VERY tired

I agree.

Over-encumbrance can work for certain games, I think. It would have to have a really realistic tone to it, though. I think inventory systems like Freedom Fighters and most fps games use the best method.

Maybe if for RPGs, you had a satchel and could carry like 10 potions, plus a sword/shield/bow on your back, dagger on hip, and one piece of armor at a time, it would be cool. There's no need to haul every piece of loot back to town, as long as the game isn't designed that way. Maybe have a realistic money system, where you get rewarded barely any gold for quests, and every item doesn't scale up 20% in cost for each successive level.

Also, I hate pre-order bonuses( especially store-exclusive).

I just want smarter, more powerful, and less frequent AI.  That would add a lot to a game.  Oh, and quicker, more efficient targeting systems would be great too.

DLC that should have been in the game (the ENTIRE multiplayer in a game, like 5 levels, the best weapon in the game, etc.)
although all that stuff (minus the mulitplayer thing, to my knowledge), has also been done in preorder bonuses.

And while zombies have been overused, the fact that they sell so well (L4D2, anyone?) means that people likely won't stop in the future.

Many times I left a pile of collected stuff around my feet in a video game. STALKER was the same way, but I was so broke I made that long trip back over and over and over.

Zombies can't catch a break, they also seem to be a staple of political correctness killing. The apocalypse doesn't seem to piss people off either.

I agree with all of those points, especially the post apocalypse one. It feels like everything has be post apocalypse now to be cool. I am so sick of it. Worst of all that scenario has bled over into other media. Has anyone seen the trailer for that upcoming movie "The Book of Eli?" That's not a book about Eli. It's Fallout 3.

The inventory management in Dead Space is actually a key contributor to the atmosphere of the game. While some games use a pause button to detach players from the action, the real-time fluency of games like Dead Space and Resident Evil 5 actually make the action more intense.

Zombies might have been overplayed, but i'm prepared to play and Left 4 Dead game valve pumps out regardless of market saturation.

To my knowledge, Fallout 3 incorporated elements of all of these (not sure about the pre-order bonus). Can you say over-encumbered Zombies... IN THE POST APOCALYPSE (to be clear, Fawkes was my little undead crate where I stored my semi useful armors. he was... encumbered.)

Zombies and post-apocalyptica are fine if used effectively. I am very bored of unnecessary zombie moments, though. If they're not our real antagonist, we don't need them. They don't really add anything to the experience other than longevity.

Pre-order bonuses suck, as do retailer-exclusive bonuses. Inventory management is pretty annoying, especially when it's as limiting as it is in Fallout 3. It's not realistic, and it's at the point where it's also annoying. XP

I say we need to say goodbye to "do this 1000 times" achievements, and also the "find all 100 little random items" achievements. If they did anything for you before the end of the game, it'd be another story, but Petruccio's Feathers and the treasure you find in Uncharted 2 are both completely worthless throughout most of the game.

Next year, I see an over-abundance in third-person action titles; in the first quarter alone, we see Bayonetta, No More Heroes, Dante's Inferno, and God of War III. And I'm sure there'll be more by the end of the year, right?

I think the worst thing about the inventory system is that it's proposing to add realism to games about fighting dragons and giant green mutants. It's really annoying. I don't mind having a inventory cap, but it should be something that is either crucial to the gameplay (survival horror games for ex) or set at such an amount that you might hit it a couple of times, but only because you have been questing like a maniac and havent gone back to drop it off.

My complaint would be the omnipresent merchant. In MGS IV, you can buy shit any where at anytime, thus removing and sense of danger. And in Dragon Age, that little retarded kid shows up at a very odd (albeit very beneficial) moment. It doesn't make any sense

Quick Time Events - it was fun in Shenmue, then God of War, then Resident Evil 4... now, on the eve of 2010, it's old. Please, die in a fire.
Franchise reboots - if it's dead, let it rest in peace. And don't even reboot something which has just been rebooted (Prince of Persia).
Insomniac Games - stop making shit. No more Ratchet, and either get Resistance on track or don't bother making them.
PSP games on PSN - overpriced and often with issues as a result of compression. The Go killed itself, this is a few more nails in the coffin.

On-screen displays, health bars, icons, symbols when they are not necessary.

Almost every game that is famous for it's immersion and atmosphere employs systems that make tons of "Look! I'm a game!" symbols on the screen either obsolete, fading away regularly, or very small.

Worst offenders: Final Fantasy XII, Metal Gear Solid 4
Shining examples: Dead Space, Mirror's Edge

If an on-screen display element is not desperately needed, do away with it. Period.

Bad writing, weak storytelling

You would think that with huge videogame budgets, companies would spend a bit of that money on people who know their ways around pacing, dialogue, characters and intelligent storytelling, but no. It's like a 2009 in which the only difference between modern movies and movies from 100 years ago were colours and resolution. It's sad, it's pathetic. For the gamer who also enjoys good movies, books or plays, videogames are straight-out insulting 95% of the time.

Worst offenders: Lost Odyssey (cutscenes), Halo 3, almost every blockbuster HD game.
Shining Examples: Lost Odyssey (dreams), Half-Life 2, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

It's not about the plot. Everyone can write interesting worlds and events; it is in the telling where you captivate people. Stop writing for morons.

Long cutscenes

In this day and age, there is no excuse for non-interactive storytelling. None.

Worst offenders: Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4
Shining Examples: Half-Life 2, Dead Space, Portal,  SH: Shattered Memories

The technology is there to engage the player in everything that you want to tell.  Stop being lazy and unoriginal.

Wii games that don't use MotionPlus

The gesture recognition of the standard Wiimote is nearly unusable, and even in those games that use it well, it is not 100% reliable. Every month there is a game that could have been significantly improves with MotionPlus but devs refuse to utilize it. Why? I don't know. It doesn't make sense.

Worst offenders: Punch-Out, No More Heroes 2
Shining Examples: Wii Sports Resort, Red Steel 2

New consoles even come shipped with the peripheral, god dammit. It's like devs never utilized the SuperFX chip when it came out for the SNES.

Space marines (especially bald ones), post-apocalyptic wastelands, huge fantasy dudes with gigantic weapons & co.

We've been balding badasses with deep voices shooting aliens in brought-down buildings for almost a decade now. It was fun, but it seriously needs to stop.

Worst offenders: Borderlands, Demon's Souls
Shining Examples Heavy Rain, The Last Guardian

Here's a crazy thought: Let's explore as many different (maybe even true-to-life) people and worlds in video games as we can.

Embarrassingly immature and ridiculous female characters

FUCKIN STOP IT, DEVS. You're giving the industry, the medium and the user base a bad name. Grow up for god's sake.

Worst offenders: Soul Calibur IV Dragon Age: Origins
Shining Examples: Half-Life 2, Silent Hill 3, with a special mention of Rune Factory: Frontier for including a chubby girl as love interest candidate.

Bloody hell.

"Anti-piracy" measures

They're no use, they annoy the living hell out of paying customers, and the pirates couldn't care less.

Worst offenders: Spore, Far Cry 2
Shining Examples: Sins of a Solar Empire, World of Goo

Cool games from cool, relaxed devs with cool bonuses and support get bought more than cool games with pathetic DRM.

Matchmaking, no ping display, bad non-US performance in console MP games

I remember when I could display a list of hundreds of servers, sorted by ping, map, player count and rules to choose from when I wanted to play an online multiplayer game.
Nowadays, I have to wait for a minute or two until a game starts. And I already know who and where the best players are and who is probably going to win because the matchmaking screen tells me. Or I live in Europe, Asia or Australia and only get laggy connections, IF the game even DISPLAYS the connection quality/speed. What the hell?

Worst offenders: Gears, Halo, Modern Warfare...
Shining Examples: None. Team Fortress 2 for Xbox at least gave a ping display and servers to choose from, but the game is practically dead.

Inventory management does suck.  Dealing with that in Borderlands, but the amount of damage per weapon helps you get rid of the non-useful stuff pretty easily.  I like to horde fun weapons in those games, even after their usefulness is gone, and you can't do that in these types of games anymore :/

On the preorder bonus front:  I got hosed in inFamous on my good guy playthrough because of that POS gigawatt blades preorder bonus.  I burned cash on that instead of the original abilities to max out and get the damn trophy.  I wholeheartedly agree on day 1 DLC and DLC on disc being BS.

Zombies are getting a bit tired, why not use werewolves, crazy ass worms like the movie Tremors, and other random demons and "share the love"

The apocalypse games could have  a nice take if say half of it is post-apocalyptic.  You know, nice futuristic city for the first half, *cataclysmic event*, then post-apocalyptic wasteland where you put the pieces back together again... or just give up.

The "it has to be an action game" trend is getting a bit annoying. Sure, there are other genres being made, but I feel like 3/5 quality games made these days are some form of action game where killing, shooting or otherwise engaging in some form of violence is the norm. While I love me some Modern Warfare and Assassin's Creed, I dont need to spill blood every time I turn on my console in order to enjoy myself and I dont fancy myself fitting into the Wii demographic either, so what the hell? I dont believe mature games have to be violent.

While it hasn't taken a real start yet, I am calling it out early; the "let's put a sex-scene in our game because that's part of real life" trend. Yeah, sex is part of real life, but I dont need to have sex in my game to make the characters feel more real (but if it fits and suits the story, sure). And furthermore, the day "got laid while drunk and woke up with an STD and an ink mustache" scene enters a mature game, I'll accept it.. because that's gritty real life stuff.

If you don't like micro management you probably shouldn't have bought Dragon Age in the first place. The game isn't about sprinting to the top of that tower as fast as possible as you eluded to, it's about taking your time, using your head and doing things the right way

If you could bring back a thousand items all at once from one outing, then the selling prices would have to be near worthless to balance that.  So instead they have a carry limit, forcing you to better manage what items you bring with you and take back.

I agree except for the post-apocalyptic complaint.  Only 2 wasteland games have come out and they were completely different from one another in terms of gameplay and well, even the mood and tone of the games really.  Borderlands is funny and ridiculous and doesn't take itself seriously not to mention the weapon dropping craziness completely seperates it from its other wasteland counterpart.  I dunno how to cateogrize FO3, but it was no FO1-2 (still was a good game) which leaves me to my next point, that is hopefully the good folks at obsidian will make a decent sequel in the FO universe with New Vegas.  And I think there isn't enough information about Rage yet.

Point is, only 2 waste-land games have come out and they might as well be two completely different games.  So I don't get the hate.

Also, completely agree about the inventory management (realism) complaint.  Worse example of a developer who completely failed to recognize this point would be whoever created Far Cry 2.

I dunno about Zombies. It's either Zombies or people-what else can you have, other than aliens? And if Aliens come along, they aren't just going to stay friendly for you to shoot them. They're gonna have to destroy stuff, which will lead to post-apocalyptic worlds.

Unskippable Cut Scenes:

All I know is that I'm playing Mass Effect again and as ME 2 draws closer, I better not have to re-watch cut scenes in that game over and over if I die.  I should be able to jump to the end of any dialog line and bypass any non-interactive cut-scene in every game after I've seen it once.  Additionally, I know getting through the Old Republic multiple times will be difficult if I can't skip the cinematics.

EDIT: By the way, it looks like zombies will be with us a while longer since there are zombie-like mutants in 2010's Crackdown 2.

Wow, there's only two oversized weapons in Demon's Souls, and no one in that game is a space marine. I like how you use two games that aren't even out as an example.

I'll side with you on preorder bonuses, at least the in-game ones. I recently discovered that some cars in Forza 3 are locked out because I bought the wrong version of the game. Can't even buy those cars through DLC. I love your game, Turn 10, but up yours!

I dont believe mature games have to be violent

There's your mistake then. Plenty of games you sound like you'd enjoy very much if you gave the console a chance. Want more good games that aren't explosion simulators yet refuse to play Wii? Too bad.

Or the preorder bonuses.

They are worthwhile for the developers and editors, so there is no reason for them to just go away.

I think you guys forgot about one thing:

The World War II setting. This type of games DESPERATELY needs rest after basicly 10 years of exploitation. I mean, there is so fucking many great periods and settings in history that were barely touched - like the reneissance, the French Revolution, the first World War, ancient East, comunism in Europe... Give that war a rest.

Although I am utterly disapointed with Assassin's Creed plot (not the execution - the overall, too far fetched conspiration and maybe the neglectful endings for the Animus characters), I was exploding with love to those guys after they said in an interview there won't be an AC game in WW2.

I read developer interviews promising that GTA would never go 3D and that Final Fantasy games were never getting direct sequels.

@Meowayne: Still, I think I can trust them on that one. Especially after the release of The Saboteur, which is basicly AC with a penchant for explosions.

How is it my mistake that I'm not their target audience? I dont refuse to play it, I just haven't seen a game worth my money, that's Nintendo's mistake. Hell, when they first announced, it I was psyched for the possibility of what that console might accomplish. Anyway, all I was saying was that I wish there was more mature games that doesn't revolve around violence, and if violence is in it, have it be part of the bigger picture rather than the center stage. I suppose Heavy Rain is something along the lines I'm talking about (from what I've seen).
