The Problem With Giantbomb...

I have used giantbomb a long time (since launch), so I think I have earned the right to speak up about what I feel are the problems with giantbomb. Also to suggest ways of fixing them. Here are some of my biggest giantbomb beefs:

COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT

The community lacks direction and composure. There are hundreds of great writers, reviewers, active members, who's contributions to the site go un-noticed. What the site needs is a place where all the best user-created aspects of the site are collected and displayed in a way that makes it easy for the users of Giantbomb to navigate. At the moment ZombiePie is doing a fucking stellar job maintaining the Community Spotlight on the forums, and as such I would like to put him forward for the role of Community Manager. A community manager is not a mod; their job is to promote, not to police. A community manager would basically put forward content which they feel deserves to be seen by a wider audience. The best user-generated content of the site would then be directed into a more accessible page to make it easier for people to find. It would be sort of like an RSS feed of all the best user generated content on Giantbomb.

THE BLOGS

I have said this many times before and i'm going to keep saying it until something happens; Blogs are fucking nuked on this website. In order for a person to find the blog of a user they are not currently following they must find that blog on the forums. But, as I have said before, a lot of the best blogs aren't suitable for the forums. You can combine the way they are posted but a Blog Post and a Forum Post are entirely different entities. The difference being that a Blog post should be a personal explanation whereas a Forum Post should promote discussion. Also not all the blogs written on giantbomb are written about videogames. SO, the situation we currently have is that there are dozens of great blogs being written every day that are being completely ignored. What this basically means is that writers lose the confidence in their work and stop writing altogether.
For a start, there is no need for "Followed Blogs" to be both on my profile page and the homepage. The Homepage should go back to displaying the "Community Blogs" that currently only appears on the homepage when nobody is logged into the site.

USER REVIEWS

When was the last time you read a User Review? A long fucking time ago i'll bet, unless it was posted in a blog - the fact that people are posting their reviews in blogs is perhaps the best demonstration of how the actual review section of the site is being ignored. I propose that there is a section of the site put aside for "Top 5 User Written Reviews Of The Week". Under every Review there is currently the option of clicking "Did you find this review helpful?" - how about we culminate the most useful reviews and stick them somewhere people can find them. The "Featured User Review" on the homepage is a good start, but considering the wealth of great reviews being written on the site you would have thought it deserved a more prominent position than the bottom of the page.

THE LAYOUT

For every problem presented there are always cop-out solutions. These are usually hidden behind menus and, unless explained, are pretty abstract. For example did you know you can find a list of all the content written on Giantbomb under the Users > Activity Feed option? I did. Do you know how often I use that feature of the site? Never. Because it's a fucking hassle. I don't want to sift through an endless list of random junk. I want clear concise categories that make finding what I want easy. At the moment the list is cluttered with "This person is now following this person!" and twitter spam. The activity feed needs filters to display only one type of activity: Blogs, Reviews, whatever. And then put that feed in a more obvious position so I don't keep forgetting about it.

I'm not just going to bitch about the site because, lets face it, I fucking live here. So I spent some time on photoshop and I would like to invite you all to see:

Project BombShelter:

As you can see the point of a community page like this would be to promote and make sure the great user-generated content of giantbomb is being found.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks For Reading
Love Sweep

Good to see someone being pro-active with their problems instead of just sitting here complaining.

I've been away from the site for a couple of months and heard rumours of a community area where I could catch up or see whats been going on. UUnofrtunately it took nearly half hour of digging to find the damn thing! A specific area where people can point to and be proud if they appear would be awesome.

I like the ideas presented in this topic as well. However, I said it multiple times over my time here, I don't blog on this site simply because of the way the it uses up the width of one's monitor. I like formatting my posts in a way that's pleasing to people's eyes. I appreciate the variable wide format for forums and message boards but, to me, it's an utter nightmare for blogging.

Or rather, it got there and is going down a road to "retarded". Seriously, i look at the replies and i realize why i don't come on here as much anymore, and it's a shame. "
Look at the title of your Thread. If you actually cared it would have been "My thoughts on Battlefield ..." or something Not This game is TERRIBLE. notice the caps.  Also you would have educated your self on the game and see WHY someone would camp. But no that's too hard for you right? They camp cuz their dicks. I'm glad you are putt off of battlefield one less person I have to get mad at who keeps leaving the base for no reason and dieing while were trying to defend.

I'm amazed at people like you, you post something utterly retarded  and are surprised when theres backlash.

EDIT: and I love how your not admitting any fault here either no no no! it cant be you whos wrong it JUST HAS to be the community. God dammit.

There are already systems in place that allow you to view ALL the content available, they are just well hidden behind menus and hard to sort through. Primarily I think these aspects of the site should be more accessible to users - promoting the best stuff is secondary, though still very important. Straight up there should just be a list of all the most recent blogs ranging back to the last 100 blogs, not just the last 8 or 9. The Activity Feed could potentially already do this, if there was a way to filter out the unwanted categories like Twitter spam - as I mentioned in my original post. After the content has been made accessible then the responsibility of distinguishing which is "mediocre" lies with the user. We don't want to be completely spoonfed... "
Exactly
And I agree on the Twitter Spam.

You know what will solve a majority of those problems ? A better search feature. You should be able to search anything on the site from the search button on top right. Right now, you need to go through hoops to search for blogs, guides, lists or forum posts. Everything is buried under loads of classifications like games, platforms, genres etc etc. This is probably a headache from a design standpoint but this feature is becoming more necessary as the community reaches 100,000 users.

No, i am saying that from what i can see it's in an irreversible decline.

And again, choerent post, thoughts, points, blah blah blah. If people are getting upset and angry over a certain view i hold when i have perfectly good reasons for holding that view then i think maybe you're right - maybe it IS my fault for the assumption of intelligence on these forums. Honestly, the more i think about it the more i am convinced system wars is smarter. I reckon tomorrow i shall prove it by posting the exact same topic there.

I think that once (if ever) they implement a way to filter topics (i use platforms, genres, and types in my suggestion but it would also work for blogs) that a lot of problem regarding blogs not being commented on because there is no way to see them in the flood of new thread and threads about popular games. What Sweep is proposing would be great for the "crème de la crème" blogs and other community activities so to speak but the "mediocre" ones would still be ignored.

The staff has done nothing to improve the community since launch really thinking of it. Guess there is that featured review thing but that is it.

If there is one thing that I would like Giant Bomb to adopt, it is more focus on user reviews. I enjoy writing reviews for games, but whenever the thought enters my mind I usually dismiss the idea. You spend time writing a well thought out review and usually only a few users will ever read it.

This has been needed for quite sometime. Not to mention the decline of users being active on GiantBomb, I think, is a result of the lack of community features. Wonderful work, let's hope this happens some time soon!

@Lies  said:

" I'd really rather see the plethora of broken ass features around the site fixed (LIKE THIS RAGE INDUCING GUIDE SYSTEM). I've long since lost interest in being a member of the giantbomb community- which is sad, cause I really liked it when the site had just launched. Obviously these things evolve, but I don't feel it's going in a direction I really care to participate in. Maybe your proposal would help, who knows, but in a lot of ways giantbomb now seems like a community oriented site with a community that just doesn't care. "

This too. There are a lot of features that were here previously that either don't work as well as they used to or are completely non-existent now (example: top wiki editors and wikis that need editing table). I also feel less inclined to come to the site as often myself.

I really like the enthusiasm. I'm thankful for all GB offers, but it's due for an update. I really think blogs should be moved back to the main display on our profiles, as well. "
I remember the mock-ups before the new profile design was implemented. It looked great, especially when there was the proposed idea of letting users move content however they liked and have profiles appear how they wanted (example, moving where blog entries would be positioned and how many would be displayed, etc). Of course, this is a really big effort, I'd imagine, to pull off. But I think the profile pages could still use some tweeking.

From both of your comments, Binman88, I've noticed you like to complain, but you don't exactly contribute any solutions. Doesn't that make you as much a part of the problem as the people you so hate?

Getting back to the original topic of the thread, I think these are good ideas and I, for one, would visit a community-focused page as that would help weed out all of the generic garbage posts people have been griping about and focus on interesting blogs and such.

I think the Add a new... needs to be put somewhere else. The only place I know it is, is in the Help area. So when a new character needs to be added, I have to go to the Help link? That doesn't make much sense to me. I like your ideas.

As huge of an annoyance the community has become with several youtube links in every populated thread along with several uses of the word "duder". The mods can only do so much when the userbase insists on attempting to reiterate a joke that was already told numerous times beforehand.

Introducing a new way to display user reviews would be a great addition.  But all things considered I feel that the current layout of the main page is done quite well.

An introduction of a community manager to read through the user made goods to pick the week's best user-created content would be nice, as it would allow the staff to continue their own editorial duties without being bogged down by having to read the reviews themselves. But it would also help give some exposure to those in the community who aren't busy trolling the forums.

While the community is an important asset to have for a site such as this, when it all boils down we are here for the staff content. The Giant Bomb philosophy of only putting content up on the main page that is interesting to an average user and not just bullshit is a concept we should consider.

Dude, you're spot on.  I like the mockup, and like fox said, you were missing that one 'good wiki-page' area.

But methinks Whiskey Crew is a bit busy with some behind the scenes stuff . . . probable GB cartoon, and a movie site, whiskey style.  But those are just my two cents.

The role of a community manager is as Jeff mentioned to both police and promote the site they work on. In an odd way a CM is like a 'master moderator' who keeps us lesser mods in line and provides the support we require while making sure the community gets the best services they can through the mods and through their content being promoted effectively. It would be good to see a CM join the USS Giant Bomb so things run a bit smoother between users, staff and mods.

As for the other stuff you've listed it'll all probably come in good time. Thing to remember is Whiskey Media isn't devoted to just Giant Bomb as both Comic Vine and Anime Vice also have their own engineering demands as well. Just be patient and I'm sure the thing you wish to change likely will, just not overnight :)

Much of what you said is why I don't blog here and why I stopped writing user reviews (there doesn't feel like there is a point to it). Also, I love that mock up. The Bomb Shelter is a dead sexy idea. I love it. Maybe Dave and Andy should hire you.

The site needs more user blog promotion, just as the guy said, look at Destructoid, it doesn't have it own wiki/database and awesome video features but the user blogs are fun to read and are well promoted, they usually appear in the front page if they are good enough. Here when I find a good blogger is only by luck, if someone had some cool reply to a thread I look on his profile to see if he has a blog, that is sad

That's actually my biggest gripe. Not only the regurgitated Giant Bomb in-jokes, but people imitating the staff's humour with "DUDE, YES!" and "THIS IS A MAD PC GAME, SON" (or following any phrase with son really).

*sigh*

Sadly this is the reason why I have never bothered to register on this site, even though I've been lurking pretty much everything Jeff and Ryan have been involved in the past couple of years.
 (what? they're entertaining guys!)

Naturally, there  are reasons for this.
-The 700000 different gamepages each have their own separate forum, so if you want to discuss an old certain game you probably can't because your topic will get buried under an avalanche of the popular game at the time. Its hard to get an actual discussion going. I think just making a board for gaming discussion and creating official threads and such ala Neogaf would really help stimulate discussion.

-Replying to topic is kind of a hassle due to the interface, so a lot of people don't even bother. If I read a certain topic I sometimes have to go through loopholes just to find it again. Let alone replying to it. Most replies are really short because of this.

-This is the type of site that generally attracts teenagers. Nuff said.

-.....and this brings me to my next point: Moderation. For such a huge amount of members , the moderation team could stand to be a little bigger. The mods can't really police the forums because discussion is so scattered everywhere(see first reason)

All these factors and more result in a community that considers spamming 'DUDER YIP' in the comments section to be the ultimate form of comedy. On the other hand, I have no complaints about the wiki, that part of Giantbomb is handled excellently.

Great post and I agree with you on every point.

I would also add another point -- Accountability. Why is it we're notified when someone agrees with our review or list, but not when they disagree? Are people disagreeing just to be douches or because they have legitimate concerns? Unfortunately, very few people click "this did not help" or "I don't agree" and then leave a comment. They just click those then move on, leaving the review author / list creator wondering what the hell they could fix or improve on.

Really, lists shouldn't even have a disapprove option -- they're personal lists for gods' sakes, what is there to disapprove?! You don't like someone's all-time favorite characters list? Good for you, but that doesn't change the fact that the list is of THEIR favorite characters.

Oh and also in the realm of accountability -- let us have an option that tells us when someone stops following us so we can at least know who it is, if not also return the favor in kind.

Anyways great ideas. I really do hope they actually implement some, if not all, of your suggestions.

Hey, where the hell am I on that community blog thing? I'll just assume "near the bottom", which is where I'll aim :P.

AWesome mock-up and great ideas, Sweep. There was really a sense of community coming together in the early days of GB, but since then I've stopped really participating in community stuff and only actually follow/talk to a select few members on Giant Bomb. But it doesn't need to be that way if user created stuff was at the forefront more.
