Battlefield 1943: Don't Let The Numbers Fool You
You should've asked them about the regenerating health and infinite ammo things and why they are in there. I'm not a big Battlefield fan but those features seem as if they're there to make the game more newbie-friendly. Which there's nothing wrong with that, but it just seems like a sissy slap to the face to BF fans.
It definitely looks like the Frost engine alright. It looks good but I probably won't be getting it. At least not on the consoles.
Whats it now 7 years?
They still havn't released a console Battlefield that hasn't been complete shit and so far removed from what 1942 stood for.
Sure the consoles are different machine but when did a game stop being a game once you port it over to another platform.
When are they going to release a TRUE battlefield for the consoles.....there getting closer,but they've had their chance and lost me.
The fewer classes is fine with me. People that chose medic in 1942 did so to heal themselves more than the team. You really need smaller maps with chokepoints like TF2 to make a medic class worthwhile. I really don't know why people are against regenerating health, unless they like periodically abandoning the action to hunt down a supply crate.
As for "unlimited ammo", it needs to be clarified. You have a finite amount of ammo for each weapon in your "bundle" and when it's used up, a countdown timer starts. When the timer reaches zero, your "bundle" is replenished. Like regenerating health, it just saves you a trip to a supply crate. It's not going to "dumb down" the game or necessarily unbalance it.
'42 only had 5 classes and the medic has been made useless. So, they really only "cut" one class. And even then, it was more of a consolidation than anything else.
Infantryman = Engineer + Assault + Anti-Tank
Rifleman = BF2 Assault
Scout = Scout + BF2 Spec Ops
3 classes are just plain easier to balance. And 3 maps isn't a problem for me, because I could play Wake and Iwo Jima forever. It's $15. It's awesome. I'm going to buy it.
I don't understand why DICE are going in this direction... It's not like Battlefield 2 and 2142 had significant piracy issues (seeing as that seems to be the main scapegoat for abandoning the PC at the moment) and BF2, 2142 and even 1942 are still enjoyed by many people today. DICE could put out a definitive Battlefield and keep it updated and they would have as much a cash cow as Team Fortress 2. After all, Battlefield 1942 was for all intents and purposes the original direction Valve wanted to take 1942, DICE just beat 'em to it. Either way, I'm interested to see what the PC version will offer. :)
Not saying it will lack the BF charm, but is there any reason for it to lack the BF numbers other than "they're not important" or whatever they can come up with? Surely they contributed to the feel of the original... Not to mention everyone's going crazy of things like "256 player matches" in a certain PS3 title, now the franchise that started the large scale warzones will take steps back? What's the point? More casual friendly? Isn't that what Battlefield Heroes is for? How many BF games are they workng on? Looks like EA is back to their ol batshit crazy milking schemes.
And you know they'll milk it to hell and back with DLC considering the slim initial content... I don't see them getting all generous and offering content for free all Valve style...
I might get it because it's running on the Bad Company engine, but I'm seriously concerned about replay value.
i just hope that the PC version has dedicated servers rather than on pc hosted as that would suck major balls.
The player count and only 3 classes don't bother me. Only 3 maps does however, specially since 1 map is a map that has been featured officially in all PC BF games, and frankly I've never really liked it since I first played it when the 1942 demo released.
I'll definitely get it. Even if it cost $20. But I would be more comfortable with the game if they had added 1-2 more maps. I guess that can be released as DLC. While I'm not against the idea of DLC I don't like DLC/expansion pack that isn't required in multiplayer games because it segments the player base.
I'll be getting this day-one on the 360, and BC2 day-one on PC. The sole reason I'm getting this for console is the fact that I cannot play with my Xbox Live friends on PC even if I'm using a 360 controller. Might even get it twice if that is the case, however unlikely it may be.
I can deal with three classes, as long as we don't have to dedicate one class per "character" like in BF Heroes. I also don't like that all guns are unlocked. I really enjoyed unlocking weapons in 2142 and BC. Hopefully there's plenty of other equipment to unlock to further customize your class. 2142 did this very well.
I too want a true Battlefield 3 with the scale of the originals or better. However I don't think we'll hear about that until people give their final impressions on MAG. I'm betting that impression is that high playercounts are great, but better when the battles are more spaced out with variety of vehicles instead of in super dense "city" style maps.
I'm looking for a quick to play for a few minutes then do something else FPS, and this could be it. I'm interested but if they charge more than $15 I'll probably pass.
