My futile attempt at E3 predictions: 2009 edition.

Hey, old E3 is back!  How we missed you booth babes.  And oh look, E3 is coming next month which means we're a month away from some major title announcements.  The hype trains are ready to go and all we have to do is fill up the boxcars with some new games and hardware.  So I'm gonna put on my cloak and predict what will happen in the future.  So cue the In The Year 2000 music, tone down the house lights and bring in the flashlights.

By the way, there are several crazy predictions so don't get excited or anything because none of this could happen... especially my final prediction.

New Zelda Wii, Pikmin 3, and F-Zero Wii officially official.

Nintendo's E3 showing last year was... kind of a joke to be honest.  Since E3 is going back to its roots with lots of fanfare, Nintendo will take the opportunity to announce games that are overdue.  The next Zelda game for the Wii will be shown to lots of cheers as always.  MotionPlus support will be highlighted, but the biggest surprise will be the dramatic changes to the series.  A vastly different story, voice acting, and a more non-linear approach to dungeon crawling that's reminiscent of the original NES game will be confirmed.  Pikmin 3 will be more Pikmin and F-Zero Wii will be more F-Zero.  All will be forgiven... this year.

Everybody's favorite PSP mockup.
Everybody's favorite PSP mockup.
We'll be duped... no new hardware.

Various pundits, analysts, and game developers have been spewing out rumors about new consoles and handhelds for well over a year or so, but I doubt anything will be unveiled at E3 this year.  That Wii HD console Michael Pachter (bullshit spewing analyst) is claiming is on its way?  Not happening.  How about that new PSP with the sliding screen and touch and/or tilt controls?  Not ready yet.  New Microsoft console?  Maybe next year.

Gran Turismo 5 the star of the Sony press conference.

Anybody remember GT5?  Well I expect Sony's press junket to make this a big deal.  I'm totally expecting a trailer to be shown along with some gameplay footage and some more information on the massive amount of content I'm expecting.  Still expecting a 2010 release, but at least we'll know it's alive and kicking.

Rare once again jumps on the shooter bandwagon.
Rare once again jumps on the shooter bandwagon.
Rare brings us a Perfect Dark sequel, new Conker game.

Rare has been quite busy with Viva Pinata and Banjo-Kazooie making the rounds.  So what will Rare's next big projects be?  Yes, I believe Perfect Dark 2 will be shown and a brand new Conker complete with the vulgar humor we know and love.  While Perfect Dark Zero has been somewhat panned recently for being pretty bad compared to more recent shooters, Perfect Dark 2 will learn from its mistakes.  I'm also expecting Conker to be even more crude than ever, possibly causing a ruckus among ratings boards and various groups.

Nintendo shows off new "core" IP that will cater to Western audience.

What is Nintendo's newest major IP to date that was not a casual title?  Chibi-Robo! maybe?  The Gamecube did have a bunch of new 1st party IPs, but most of them didn't quite catch on.  Pikmin is probably Nintendo's newest big creation, but it's been 8 years since Pikmin and Nintendo has become a company dependent on older properties and the Wii series.

EA goes back to tried and true sequels, no new IPs announced.

EA was all about new franchises last year, but too many of those games didn't meet sales expectations.  Mirror's Edge and Army of Two weren't runaway hits and even Boom Blox had a tough time breaking through.  Spore was EA's biggest new hit, but c'mon!  It's a Will Wright game that was expected to sell huge.  This year, EA will likely stick with sequels and Brutal Legend.

Speaking of EA, SimCity 5 announced.

This one is way overdue.  Spore will certainly be milked for a while longer, but I suspect Maxis is also working secretly on a long overdue true SimCity sequel with all the bells and whistles.  SimCity 5 will be EA's biggest announcement and will boast online play which will be more MMO oriented and more complex gameplay than the previous games.

Could be a reality someday.
Could be a reality someday.
Sony jumps on the motion control bandwagon again.

News stories about motion controls coming to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have been out there ever since the Wii became a runaway hit, but so far it's all been rumors and speculation.  The Sixaxis controller was Sony's shoehorned attempt at motion controls, but it never caught on... but Sony is likely revive motion controls on the PS3 with something that may resemble the Wii Remote.  It might be too late for a complete overhaul of the controls on the PS3, but I sense that Sony will announce this new controller and a few games that will make use of it.

Upset pick of the day... Power Stone 3 for the 360.

Yep, my longshot pick.  In a shocking move, Capcom will bring back yet another classic franchise, this time in the form of Power Stone 3.  Power Stone gained a following and many hold this game in high regard, even higher then the Smash Bros. games.  And in another shocking move, it will be a 360 exclusive.  Expect Power Stone 3 to be yet another game that will revive the "fighting" genre.  Capcom has been pretty good to the fighting genre lately so maybe... Power Stone 3?

Can't wait to eat crow next month when nothing I said comes to fruition.  Later, Giant Bomb.

Good stuff, let's go.

New Zelda Wii, Pikmin 3, and F-Zero Wii officially official.  In my dreams, oh yeah... forgiven. Will it happen 67%

We'll be duped... no new hardware. I wonder if the OnLive will be there? PSP seems possilbe. I score this one 45% chance of coming true.

Gran Turismo 5 the star of the Sony press conference. That would be a crime if it's not, software can move consoles. 89%.

Rare brings us a Perfect Dark sequel, new Conker game. Ha! 0%.

Nintendo shows off new "core" IP that will cater to Western audience. A new "core" hmmm 95%. People who like it... 25%.

EA goes back to tried and true sequels, no new IPs announced. They'll have at least one so... 0%.

Speaking of EA, SimCity 5 announced. Your dream 100%, reality 0%.

Sony jumps on the motion control bandwagon again. A tv remote looking thing with motion controls for "my" blu-ray player... genius. 82%

Upset pick of the day... Power Stone 3 for the 360. 0% of how much I care. 50%.

I'd love there to be a Power Stone 3. Hopefully it won't be XBOX exclusive though.

You hope too much for Nintendo. I think they'll announce Pikmin 3, Zelda Wii and/or Mario Galaxy 2.

Sony will give a solid release date for GT5 (sometime in 2010), but won't give that much new info on it. Sony's conference will be mostly about Uncharted 2, Crack in Time and God of War 3. Microsoft will announce a new game that they probably shouldn't be making, and totally push ODST.

SimCity 5 would be awesome as it's been a while since that franchise got a new game (SC4 came in 2004 I think). My only real hope for E3 this year is first footage for HL2:ep3 which is not too crazy a thing to wish for as Valve don't have any games planned for this year. Also I'd love to see some gameplay of Alan Wake and just find out if that game is still alive because I really like it's premise.

New Zelda Wii, Pikmin 3, and F-Zero Wii officially official.
While I agree that something along these lines will be announced, I think you are falling into the same trap all Nintendo fans do as E3 nears.  Every year in recent memory, the Nintendo devotees leave the convention disappointed because they get their hopes
up way too high and believe that Nintendo hasn't actually shoved their needs to the side in favor of the lucative casual market.  I think one of these games (or a Mario) will be announced but definately not all three.
We'll be duped... no new hardware.
I think there will be some new handheld hardware.  Probably nothing else for the consoles.  I'd be surprised if any of these new motion controllers actually appear.
Gran Turismo 5 the star of the Sony press conference.
I'd completely forgotten about this.  I really hope you're right.  If they do show it, then I bet (along side the new PSP) they'll also re-announce the GT5-PSP game they promised a few years ago.
Nintendo shows off new "core" IP that will cater to Western audience.
I think this is vaporware, but if they do show something I'm going to go with the "same thing every year" guess of Kid Ikarus.
Rare brings us a Perfect Dark sequel, new Conker game.
Rare ain't doing squat on that forefront.  Neither game was much of a success in their Xbox incarnations.  I doubt they want to invite more criticism by returning to these failures.  I think Rare wants to get at least one successful game (sales wise) out before they return to either of these properties.
EA goes back to tried and true sequels, no new IPs announced.
I think they'll show a couple but nothing like they did last year.  After all, these games would have been green lit before all the short sales of last Christmas season changed their minds on the subject.
Speaking of EA, SimCity 5 announced.
That'd be nice.  I wonder if there would be some link to Sims 3 in the same way there was a link between SimCity 4 and Sims 2.
Sony jumps on the motion control bandwagon again.
Nah, all these motion control rumors are just that...rumors.  To quote Chuck D and Flava-Flav "Don't Believe the Hype"
Upset pick of the day... Power Stone 3 for the 360.
Maybe as a download only game off XBLA, otherwise, I'm not seeing it as a real possibility.  I'd expect the Halo Cart racer or Gears of War golf game to be released before a retail edition of Power Stone.  There was a similar game on the original Xbox (Barbarian) but it didn't do all that well.  I don't know if the 360 market is interested in a Power Stone remake.

I do agree with a lot of your points, Dalai, but I have a few disagreements.

First, there will be some new sequel for NIntendo, that is for sure, but I really doubt another Zelda game is on the way. I think a Pikmin and maybe a F-Zero game are likely, but Nintendo doesn't need to worry about a Zelda game right now. They are probably holding off for that one until the next console.

I also don't expect Rare to do any of those games that you mentioned, mainly because in an interview I read with the head dudes of the company, they said they are all looking forward and they really don't plan on revisiting their old franchises. There is a possibility from a business standpoint that this is a viable question, but, then again, those games weren't exactly commercial successes anyway, right?

EA will have a new IP, and, at the very least, they will show their sequels to their new IP's of last year, Mirror's Edge and Dead Space.

And SimCity 5? Hmmm.....I don't know about that one.

Still, I do think a few of your predictions will be winners (GT5, Nintendo's "core" IP), and that Power Stone one came out of nowhere.

Wut? Plenty of (also good) games, E3 or not. F Zero sure would be nice as per this prediction, but Excitebots sure covers the arcade racing field more than competently enough, for example.

I won't turn this into a "is the Wii crap" because I don't think it is and that's not what I meant, Excitebots isn't something that interests me and lately and I haven't seen anything that has caught my interest.

There is a lot of promising stuff coming out including The Conduit, I just hope that Nintendo announces something like the prediction in the OP because I frankly am not interested in another Wii Fit.

Its a pretty solid predictions list, but I feel like theres little chance of Sony NOT showing off a new PSP model. They are getting attacked from both the DS and Iphone, and they need something to get them ahead in the market. Sure, itll just be a redesign, but its something they need.

Alexander, Excitebots is great and all, but no matter how much you squint your eyes, its not F-Zero. I would put aside every other game i own to play the crap out of F-Zero Wii

Yeah I probably do hope too much, but considering that a sizable chunk of the audience has left the Wii behind, they might want to show they can still be cool among the gaming community.

I expect Sony to show a lot of stuff they announced already, but the GT5 hype has been fading so they'll need to show something.

Microsoft... not really sure what they're planning.  I'm sure ODST will be there along with something by Rare, maybe a big NXE update, and Forza 3.

The Zelda announcement will likely be a trailer with a fuzzy release date, probably 2010 or even spring 2011.  Pikmin 3 has been hinted at and that F-Zero sequel is long overdue.

The Rare predictions can be considered longshots, but I can't see Rare not making another Perfect Dark this generation since PDZ was a platinum hit.  Maybe Rare doesn't want to rehash their olf franchises, but Microsoft might be pulling some strings and want to see them make sequels of their big franchises.  Hell, Killer Instinct 3 has been rumored for the longest time.

I still think EA's new IP will pretty much be Brutal Legend and that's it, and that's been known for a while now.  SimCity 5... it has to happen now that Spore is pretty much out of the way.  It's been 6 years since the last good SimCity game and there's money to be made there.

For some reason I think these PSP rumors are somewhat true, but I really think Sony is going to choose another outlet to announce the new PSP.  Maybe Tokyo Game Show or the next GDC, but not yet.  Sony is going to push their future PSP lineup and any new PSP announcement will overshadow games like Rock Band: Unplugged and LittleBigPlanet PSP.

Thanks for the comments and criticisms everyone.  Looking forward to my ass kicking when nothing I said comes true.

While I wouldn't mind another PD game, I don't really see it happening what with the only people being excited about it being me and Puerto Rico.*  As for everything else, I wouldn't be terribly surprised. I'd like to see what they do with a new Zelda game, if only because they hinted that Twilight Princess was going to be the last in the Ocarina style...whatever that means.

Really, E3 predictions are fun and all, but the most interesting stuff that comes out of the show is always the stuff none of us knew about before hand.

*Puerto Ricans love them PDZ.

This year's E3 will end up on opposite day which means...

  • MGS4 is forced a port to the 360.
  • Halo is ported to the PS3, as well as GoW1 + 2.
  • The Nintendo Wii sales plunge from "winning so hard I wipe my ass with $100 bills" to "making a real system and trying to sell it for $400".
  • Reality shows completely stop, despite having no relation to games and therefore no importance in my post.

Just sayin'.
