2008's Game of the Year, As Chosen By You

Today's the day we reveal the results of your votes and the game you chose as the best of 2008.

The war economy!
Remember those laid-back days of late December, when all we had to do was sit around, hang out, watch TV, and check out the daily updates to Giant Bomb's year-end awards? Me too. It was glorious. One day I slept in until like 4PM. It was crazy.

Along with our own awards, we also asked you to pitch in and vote on your favorite game of the year. We figured we'd give you guys a few weeks to cast some votes and reveal the winner on January 15th. It seemed so far away, like some far-flung future where the police have been replaced by robots and cars drive themselves.

As it turns out, today is January 15th. I got a hand-written parking ticket yesterday from an actual, human cop. And as much as I tried to let go of the wheel while driving in this morning, the car simply would not steer itself. I was pretty disappointed.

But there's no disappointment involved when it comes to your voting. The votes have been cast and the winner has been chosen. Your game of 2008, as voted by you or people like you, is...

It's true. You all like Solid Snake's latest (final?) adventure. Unless you were among the 14 percent that voted for the #2 game, Grand Theft Auto IV. From there it breaks down into smaller chunks, with games like Fallout 3LittleBigPlanet, and Gears of War 2 doing reasonably well. Others did pretty poorly, though. Infinite Undiscovery? Zero votes. Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit? Not one of you thought it was the best game of 2008. Not even Vinny.

Can't say I'm too surprised by that. If you listened to our year-ending podcast, you know that we tossed and turned over GTA4 and MGS4 for hours before making our choice. I probably would have been happy with either choice, and it's neat that it's winning a top award from all y'all.

Grats Giant Bomb user's, you guys got it right.

I think I voted for Left 4 Dead. I knew I was throwing my vote away, but at the same time, I love that game to... death?! Huh? Huhhh??? Anybody?

I guess I would have chosen differently if I had put more thought into it. The lack of maps really drags that game down over time.

Posted by Shane_O

Wow! I was sure more people would have voted for GTA4.**

** I am, by no means, implying that I voted for GTA4. I've only played Vice City. I voted for another game.

Posted by Tolkienfanatic

Glad to see MGS4 won, GTAIV would have been acceptable, but MGS4 is definitely my preference.

and it should have been GiantBomb's game of the year but nooooooooooo they thought the random fun you get in open world games (the same fun you get an any open world game) was better than the skill and achievement it took to emotionally attach you to the "moments" in MGS4. they thought the accidental running over an exploding barrel and back flipping into a bird (somethin i can accidentally do in Saints Row) was more righteous than revitalizing core game mechanics like something as simple as hitting the X button over and over to the most intense thing you've ever done. rat bastards.

You've clearly not listened to Giant Bomb's Game of the Year podcast.

Three words... World of Goo.

The hell with you all, that's my choice.

Posted by bshirk

MGS4 is awesome so far, so nice choice.  I'm disappointed Lost Odyssey wasn't mentioned, but I'm betting that I'm one of the few who gave that game game of the year.

Posted by Wright

aha poor DBZ. Everyone likes those doggone metal-gears these days.

Wow, this is surprising. Makes me happy that a community can actually like a game with a decent story (my personal favorite).  Second on my list was fallout 3. Other big titles this year were good overall, but they cant take on old snake.  Oh yeah, fable 2 is a violent version of Sims.... and thats all im gonna say about that crap

I think MGS4 is the perfect Game of The Year winner.
I also enjoyed GTAIV but that game wasn't fully realized, there was a poor amount of side missions and barely anything to do in the city, also the game manages to have one of the worst video game endings I have ever seen (it's just not worth beating the game to see, terrible how some developers rush their games sometimes), which is too bad because the rest of the story was absolutely fantastic.
MGS4 is amazing on it's gameplay, story, and production levels. Kojima productions put an astounding amount of work into the game and they obviously poured their hearts into the story and characters to make an amazing finale.
For me the game wins on gameplay and story acheivment, but also it wins on Kojima's hard work ethic they put into their game.
Truly good games are made by those who truly work hard at their craft and take their fans into consideration. And Hideo Kojima and team definetly fit that part.
(I also liked Banjo-Kazooie!!)

I didn't even know there was a vote. And I go to GB every day!

On the topic of Solid Snake, he looks just like Tom Selleck. Who looks just like my dad. You have no idea how cool it was playing MGS 4 as my own father. It was like the game was made for me, and Tom Selleck's kids.

Dude, Infinite Undiscovery wasn't even the best 360-exclusive JRPG to come out THAT MONTH.  There's no way that's game of anyone's year.

LordAndrew told me: You've clearly not listened to Giant Bomb's Game of the Year podcast.

oh but i have. they all agreed both were technologically dope, all agreed they both had good characters, storyline. Brad said GTA4 gameplay sucked, Vinny said MGS4 gameplay sucked so the gameplay issue was irrelevant. in the end it came down to them all agreeing that after playing a mission whatever corky retarded and fun happenings happened in GTA4 you could tell some guy the next day how much fun you had. totally ignoring that that stuff comes with any open world game because its open world and the created moments in MGS4 was more of an achievement. but us, the people, the totally professional, intellectual and sophisticated people picked the right game.  anybody who didn't pick it is a stupid gay fucktard face and is gay.

What are you? 3?

Well, I actually voted for Left 4 Dead. Though I really love the game, thinking better now either MGS 4 or GTA 4 are more deserving of the game of the year award. Nice choice.
Posted by JJOR64

I voted for Brawl but MGS 4 still deserves it.  SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!

Posted by thedeusmachine

Professor Layton FTW!

Posted by dum41

I voted for Gears of War 2. I had the most fun with that game. Though I can live with MGS being GotY. That shit was amazing.

Posted by JohnDudebro

DON'T BLAME ME, I VOTED FOR BANJO-KAZOOIE

Edited by Jedted

I thought they were gonna let peope vote in the other categories for GOTY, what happened?

Posted by Roger_Klotz

I said metal gears was game the year but for some fucking reason I voted for fallout 3.

Posted by FourSerioux

It's good for what it is, heck it's great for what it is, but to me it just isn't enough of a game to justify it as game of the year.  Interactive movie of the year maybe, but not game of the year.

Posted by Kraznor

Weak, I guess I kind of threw my vote away on Braid but I adamantly disagree with the MGS4 decision. Oh well, guess it doesn't really matter.

Posted by TwoOneFive

definitely a better choice than gta4, a game thats...not...fun.

Posted by trav3ler

I was one of the Audiosurf votes.

And I'm disappointed in you Giant Bomb.  MGS4 was an overhyped piece of crap.

I voted for Metal Gear Solid 4. Awesome.

I'm totally writing the box quote for when they request to put the Giantbomb community GotY tag on their GotY edition.

There is Justice afterall!

Posted by Revocelot

My pick. The overall experience of this game was INTENSE. It's epic, wicked, insane, sexy. Never before have I finished a game 5 times in 3 weeks. Perfection.

David Jaffe was asked

Q: What game are you most jealous of?

A: Metal Gear Solid 4. An amazing achievement of both gameplay and mastering the process of game production. To make a game of that scale and at that level of quality clearly took a whole hell of a lot of tenacity and vision.

w00t! Go MGS4! It was the only game released this year that lived up to, and exceeded my expectations. Flawless game IMO.

Edited by goodlucktj

mgs4 totally deserves goty awards, so no bones there.

i myself chose 'world of goo', more as a statement vote, than an actual contender.

while i've done no research to back this up, i speculate none of the gb staff have played it. that's understandable, but i was just floored to think it didn't make one single gb award category.

I would vote for "The Professor's Lab" made by me, for my computer science class, but then again that's an extremely biased choice. It was a platformer involving a professor who kame hame ha'd his failed experiments, oh how wonderful it was.

In regards to GOTY, I'm not sure what I would pick, but a lack of content was the issue for me in MGS4. But then again, I did pull off the foxhound emblem with relative ease and got half way through my big boss emblem without using the solar gun and gave up out of boredom. Maybe other people found it more challenging and thus enjoyed it more. Oh and the ending for me was utter dissappointment, didn't feel very impactful and felt too much of a warm send off for snake after MGS3 (my favourite and only mentioned for comparison reasons, i know its not the same snake) and the sad, ending it contained which really impacted me more.

I would have voted for Time Crisis 4 because I can't nitpick it to death. That was last year right...?

Posted by Otacon

It deserves it really. Though I'm still going to be a Molyneux and say LBP was incredible.

Posted by TekZero

I didn't vote for MGS4 simply because I didn't play it.  My vote went to GTA4.

Posted by Threens

I just recently played through the game. It may have been the fact that my wife kept sighing in my ear that the cut scenes went on forever or it may have been the longwinded explanations of everything I thought best left to the imagination, but I didn't really like it. It really says something that I was able to beat the game portion (cut scenes not included) in 5 hours my first playthrough. I thought the animation was breathtaking and there were high points in the narative, but overall it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I should have played it way before the hype (of course I didn't have a PS3 then) then maybe I wouldn't have been so tainted. oh well, on to bigger and better things.

Posted by AutomaticSnake

cool i voted for MGS4

Posted by Kazona

I haven't played MGS4 so I voted for GTA IV

Posted by freezerr
Posted by Kenzo287

I voted for Gears but only because I didn't get to play MGS4 so I didn't want to vote for a game I never played before even though I know it's amazing.

Posted by AURON570

well i voted for Burnout Paradise, but that was before I played MGS4.

Posted by idiotic_genius1

MGS4 is the one game that makes me wish I had the money to buy a ps3.

Posted by daniel_beck_90

It is indeed a great game
