Sony Makes PSOne Classics Available for Vita In Most Ludicrous Way Possible

If you live in America, you get nine officially supported games. If you live in Europe, you get over a hundred. What?

If you work at it, Cho Aniki is unofficially downloadable for North American Vita owners. You're going to want to work at it. HARD.
If you work at it, Cho Aniki is unofficially downloadable for North American Vita owners. You're going to want to work at it. HARD.

Good news, everyone who has been itching to download classic PlayStation games to their Vita! Now you can! Unless, of course, you live in North America, in which case... Bad news, everyone!

So, here's how this currently shakes out. Sony has announced nine supported PSOne games for North American Vita users...and 129 for European players. Why the absurd dissonance between regions? No idea. Sony hasn't said, and it doesn't sound like they will be explaining it any time soon.

However, here's where things get weird. Reddit users, as they are often wont to do, have compiled a list of games that can be played via a workaround, despite not being officially supported for North American users. Basically, you'll need to have a PS3 to download the games, and then do some transferring from there. You can read about the whole process here.

Undoubtedly, North American players will eventually be able to access all of these games in an official capacity, but until then you may have to do a little working around. Below this paragraph you'll find the full list of officially available games. Bolded and underlined games are officially available in North America, while the rest will be available in Europe once the Vita 1.8 update is downloaded. Reddit's list of unofficially downloadable games can be found here.

Since some people in the comments are confused, let me be super clear. The below list is ONLY officially released games for EU and NA. You'll have to go to the above Reddit link to see stuff that is unofficially downloadable.

That's gotta be a record for the most product links in a single news story, right?

What's the price range of PS1 games on their digital store?

Most of them are $5.99 with a few games like Final Fantasy 7 costing $9.99.

Not too bad. Thanks ^_^

Alex, you left out that most of not all the European releases can be transferred onto to Vita using the PS3. Make sure you have the uninstalled copy(bubbled) in order to xfer.

That headline is fucking SPOT ON though!! Sony just, doesn't fucking get it. This PSone support release had been nothing short of a clusterfuck.

Ha ha! Nine games is enough. Sony will throw US consumers a bone and release more after everyone has beat the nine initial releases.

It seems to me it's a waiting game for NAs. It's funny how the first thing to make me even think about buying a vita is a sweet list of old PSone games!

That's just really bad business on for Sony, I can understand if some games just aren't going to the Vita for some agreement disputes but having it going to EU but not US is rather silly. Hopefully we will get an explanation soon on why this difference of releases per region is happening.

I wouldn't really care either - at least not til they released some obscure awesome thing I totally forgot about.

Aren't the games listed just the ones that's available on the Vita PSN store? I heard that in the patch notes they've stated that PS Classics you've purchased on PS3 will be able to transfer no problem so it's not like it's a workaround thing at all. I've had no trouble transferring Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI, though Vita doesn't seem to recognise Final Fantasy V which I was hoping to play last night. Shame not every game is compatible right off the bat.

And this is why I don't own a Vita yet. Jesus Sony. I would have been there day one if you basically supported a UMD-scan-in type program for your PSP games, and supported PS1 games out of the game. I am not sure why this is even an issue other than maybe afraid of getting custom firmware'd again?

Yeaaaaah. Not all.

Though the list floating around seriously needs to have Final Fantasy Tactics added to it. Downloaded to PS3, worked on Vita. How did these guys NOT test FFT? :p

Because you're better off getting the PSP version.

Ah, Lovely. And yet...It is actions like this on the parts of publishers that drive people to pursue illegitimate means of acquiring entertainment media.

The existence in the US of websites like HULU, for example, do a great providing people with content, but when networks intentionally put in a 2 week delay on new episodes, people are going to look.elsewhere. And Europeans will do this too, because they sometimes have to wait /months/ to get the latest episodes of shows, compared to American consumers.

The whole business is messed up really. Publishers who don't get their act together lose out on a lot of business to people who take things into their own hands.

The European PSN store get the shaft every week and Americans whine when some PS1 games almost doesn't work. Oh, cry me a river...

Seriously though, the difference in content across the PSN regions is kinda fucked up. One can only hope that they have better systems and deals in place for the PS4 launch (yeah, right).

I understand there's an unofficial workaround, but it's still the fact that Sony messed this up and gave us 9 official games. Plus I would imagine if going the PS3-to-Vita route messes anything up they will feign ignorance and say "we didn't tell you to do that!"

@Darkstorn: There's no confusion going on. NA Vita owners are getting access to way fewer games, that's the story here.

Admittedly, Sony could get out ahead of this with an explanation, that might help somewhat. But there's no way to spin this that isn't going to piss off a bunch of people.

Sony doesn't understand marketing. The Vita getting a ton of classic PS1 games could have been a great, positive story for the Vita. However, when relayed by the media this just ends up confusing gamers and making them think "WTF Sony!?!"

Re-downloaded all my PSone stuff to the PS3 and used the content manager to transfer all the games and saves. For whatever it's worth, the content manager works incredibly smoothly, and I'd honestly rather copy it all than have the Vita itself download it.

Granted, this isn't much consolation for those without a PS3, but I really don't think those who have the option have much room to complain here.

That said, I will never understand why they don't release every game in every region if they have the rights to release it anywhere. I'm still bummed about Japan getting Musashi and MegaMan Legends for PSone Classics.

So the one time the PAL region doesn't get tossed a few table scraps, it's to get access to 15-year-old games on a system I probably won't ever own.
