I was wondering if GiantBomb could have a Member of the month?
The MOTM (Member of the month) will be chosen by the Mods and maybe even the Staff. The winner will be chosen depending on how much they have helped the community, contributed to the Wiki, written reviews etc.
I think this could encourage people to help the site even more.
The MOTM could get a little "MOTM" sign under their Avatar in the forums, like the Moderators have. This sign would go away when the month is over.
They could also have this Trophie in their profile which says something like "Member Of The Month April 2009". That would look pretty sweet.
Anyways what do you guys think?
Member of the month?
Sounds great to me, with everyone fighting over who is going to do more stuff it will end up helping this place without them even knowing.
"Sounds great to me, with everyone fighting over who is going to do more stuff it will end up helping this place without them even knowing."Exactly. It kind of turns into a friendly competition. Like when you competed with your friends to get the best grades or something. It helps you as well.
Well, people will get too big for their boots. On the other hand if I win once then I'm fine with it.
"I don't see anything wrong with this. I support highlighting Wiki contributions more."Well I've been trying to do that with the Community Spotlight, but interest has kind of petered down. I was debating whether or not I should feature user blogs but the nomination process would be overly complicated and I don't know how I could make it work.
I'd probably just end up winning it every month so if you want to create some crazy award that makes everyone more jealous of me than all of you motherfuckers already are then go right ahead and shoot yourself in the foot.
"Vinchenzo said:Has Jakob ever said he hates the Wii? If I recall correctly he says he doesn't play it as much but he doesn't hate it."Well if we wanted to be specific I'd win the following...Sorry, but that one goes to Jakob.""
- Best display of hatred for the PS3 / Wii.
"Great idea from the mind of a fourteen year old......"How do you know my age? Oh it was probably from that thread I replied to earlier.
This is only going to work if the people support it. If someone is going to turn into an ass after he wins this once, then just scrap the whole idea.

"How was that feature called again where one of the members who did some interesting wiki stuff put in the spotlight by the crew? They only did it once, not sure but thought it was brad or vinny who did it. "Now that sounds interesting to me... Let me know if you remember what is was called because i'd like to check it out.
Gonna bullet point some thoughts I had over this when we Mods flirted with the idea way back whenever we discussed it.
- How do we determine who is/isn't worthy of being MOTM? What criteria are we looking for a user to fill to become MOTM?
- Do we make the selection process transparent so the rest of the community see what and how we are approaching the selection process?
- If we do then how many people will just behave so they fit the criteria required and then revert back to less positive behaviour after they are picked?
- How do we effectively stand by with a reason as to why we choose who we do when there are multiple people all fitting the same criteria? How essentially do we pick user A over user B and C when all three are very very similar?
- Will we make Moderators exempt from being picked purely because they are in a volunteer position of power on the site? Is it fair we exempt our peers from such an award?
- Is a MOTM feature of any use to the site / community other than being a popularity contest or giving select few users a bragging right over their fellow users?
- Would it be fair for us to single out one user above the rest every month? When we try our very best to treat everyone as equals and urge everyone to do the same.
- If we don't pick the users with the highest Wiki score or Forum post count, will they feel the selection is fixed to be fairer on users with smaller amounts of both?
- Are users going to have to be active members on the site for a long time before they get to be even thought of for selection? IE how do we make it so new users who join today can be considered for selection compared to users who signed up at launch?
I think I should decide MOTM. I can be the determining figure.
For this month, I pick.....smug dark loser.
You know what features like that do? Makes one person feel incredibly good about themselves for a bit, and a good portion of others either disappointed or pissed that they didn't get it. Or, they just submit because, hey, let's make this site as complete as possible without some insignificant glory.
As you can clearly see, I'm so for this idea.
"JackiJinx is Member of the Month."I, for one, welcome our new female overlord. At least for the next 20 days when she'll have to prove her worth all over again.

"Gonna bullet point some thoughts I had over this when we Mods flirted with the idea way back whenever we discussed it.Ok, seriously now. It's likely never going to happen, and I think Hamz has illustrated why. Not everyone is mature enough to accept not being chosen, which is very unfortunate. Not to mention, in the future, there will be many more active users, and selection will be a big problem. Many users go unnoticed, and it wouldn't be fair to those who don't have established popularity. Really, it's needless to have such a thing.
- How do we determine who is/isn't worthy of being MOTM? What criteria are we looking for a user to fill to become MOTM? Being Hamz or like Hamz.
"
- Do we make the selection process transparent so the rest of the community see what and how we are approaching the selection process? Transparency is totally overrated.
- If we do then how many people will just behave so they fit the criteria required and then revert back to less positive behaviour after they are picked? Probably everyone.
- How do we effectively stand by with a reason as to why we choose who we do when there are multiple people all fitting the same criteria? How essentially do we pick user A over user B and C when all three are very very similar? Easy: we just choose you, Hamz.
- Will we make Moderators exempt from being picked purely because they are in a volunteer position of power on the site? Is it fair we exempt our peers from such an award? See above.
- Is a MOTM feature of any use to the site / community other than being a popularity contest or giving select few users a bragging right over their fellow users? It's probably useless, but who doesn't like to brag?
- Would it be fair for us to single out one user above the rest every month? When we try our very best to treat everyone as equals and urge everyone to do the same. You're a cut above, Hamz. We have to recognize this.
- If we don't pick the users with the highest Wiki score or Forum post count, will they feel the selection is fixed to be fairer on users with smaller amounts of both? I doubt this will concern anyone.
- Are users going to have to be active members on the site for a long time before they get to be even thought of for selection? IE how do we make it so new users who join today can be considered for selection compared to users who signed up at launch? Easy, we make a mathematical equation where we divide all posts counts by pi, add their wiki score, and then you, Hamz, can arbitrarily choose from there.
Why not have the award go to a member's contribution work instead of the member themselves. Like, bring back the staff feature's list for important work done by the community.
I think is should be a popularity contest. Let's segregate into cliques of (FPS) jocks, (RPG) freaks, (RTS) nerds, & (casual-game) cheerleaders. All the Wiitards, Xbots and Phsonies* can all vote each other up and down to jockey for the "golden turnip" or whatever the reward may be. If the mods want to bring some civility to the procedure, then they can have their own coaches' poll. Otherwise, let loose the dogs of social politics and watch the fun begin.
*I heard somewhere "phsony" is a disparaging term for a Sony fanboy. It's pronounced similar to "phony". I don't know how popular it is actually, but I thought I'd truck it out and see how it fairs.
Somewhat decent idea, but it wouldn't work. So many people go unnoticed that are contributing quite a bit to the site, i.e. me :P
I am opposed to this. Why? Member of the month sounds kinky.
User of the month sounds better.
Member of the Month should be reserved for GiantDong.com
