Interestingly, considering Sega is still in the hardware business, Constantine Hantzopoulos thinks Nintendo can make a profit on the Wii selling at $80 a unit.

This is another snippet responding from Constantine Hantzopoulos on the most recent 4 Guys 1UP podcast. Hantzopoulos was asked if he would be interested in Wii HD (from a developer’s standpoint) and also whether he thinks Nintendo would want it. He indicates that while he isn’t sure what Nintendo’s game plan is, he acknowledges that profits are down for the company and instead could decide to lower the price of the Wii.

“The interesting thing is Nintendo, they make money off of every console they sell. I think one of the big things that we found out is it really is a mass market product where mom or whoever goes out, the 80% of the people out there who go out and buy a Wii box are happy with Wii Sports and they don’t really need another game. Or if they do need another game, they’ll buy Wii Resort because it comes with a free Wiimote or Wii Play…So, honestly I don’t know…You can obviously see that profits are down for Nintendo. I think the Wii is on its tail slide, unless they drop the price to like 80 bucks then you’ll start seeing it flying off the shelves. And I believe they’ll still make money if they drop it to 80 bucks…Point being is they have the ability to lower the price on the Wii [...] where Sony and Microsoft cannot do that.”

This isn't surprising, the Wii uses close to PS2 level hardware and the PS2 costs almost nothing to make at this point. If I were to give an estimate I would peg the cost of manufacturing a Wii at $20-50. 

Probably because of the hardware. It probably doesn't cost that much to manufacture. Think about what you get out of the Wii.

If by close you mean about at least double the specs or more depending on the specific area looked into, then yeah, it's close. And since the PS2 is sold for $100 MSRP then $200 as it is now sounds about right for a Wii also. Of course both that and the PS2 sound incredibly overpriced if you compare the specs to the other systems, but still. "

I am much the same about the 360 and all the violent, shooting games.  There isn't anything wrong with it as what you like is the only thing that matters.  If I said that the 360 was shit because it had lots of shooting and sport games I don't care about, then I would be just as ignorant as some of the people who flood Wii threads.

I wouldn't be surprised. Phones are being released these days with better computational and graphical capabilities than the Wii. That's not me just being an ass towards the Wii, either; it's a fact. Sure, they're obviously more expensive to manufacture, but that's only because R&D to create such minuscule chipsets over years time took its toll. Keep things on the larger, home console-sized scale, and it doesn't seem like it would cost much to produce, on such a mass level that reflects the Wii's strong sales numbers, hardware that is essentially Xbox 1 level in complexity (with the time and manufacturing process advances to make everything smaller and less expensive to produce).

I believe back when the Wii was $250 they were making around $6 in profit on the Wii.

I have some 40-50 Wii games, kermoosh. Want me to list them? :D

1. DER.  It's essentially a faster Gamecube with a cheaper-because-it's-more-common DVD drive.  That's what's known as smart use of your R&D investments.
   
2. So what?  Anyone who assumes that they're not paying the same or similar percentage breakdown of profits vs cost to manufacture (let alone warranty which this article factoid seems to ignore) on any tech product is fooling themselves.

If Nintendo can get away with making a crazy amount of profit per Wii, why should they drop the price? Once demand starts to dry up again they'll drop the price another $50. You might not like it, but that's how business works. 
 
At least one console has made a profit throughout. Sony and Microsoft have to rely on software sales to make up for their losses.

I find the best reason to own the Wii is for the WiiWare.
 
I love the old arcade games like Golden Axe and Streets of Rage. And, of course, the best old game ever: ICE HOCKEY ON THE NES  (and if you disagree, you, sir, do not know fun)

I have a couple of pure Wii releases, but I certainly don't enjoy the console for them. I enjoy playing the old timey shit with my friends.

 Constantine Hantzopoulos is the most ridiculous and simultaneously awesome name I've ever seen.

It's possible, after all, when the Wii launched, they were already making almost a little under $10 on each console. As technology progressed, it also becomes cheaper.

It doesn't matter.  It is like showing proof to a Christian that Jesus doesn't exist.  They would still believe what they want. "

For whatever reason, video gamers tend to, on the whole, place more stock in professional reviews of works than fans of any other medium. Only arguably second to news, reviews of the newest games are the main attraction of most gaming sites and magazines. In fact, review scores are just as likely to be used as personal opinions in Console Wars debates or to argue which of the newest Killer Apps is the best.
 
This is why Eight Point Eight situations occur with such startling regularity. Of course, while there's nothing wrong in placing some stock in the opinions of others, review scores shouldn't be regarded as authoritative, simply because reviewers are, like everyone else, human beings with their own personal tastes and preferences. Not to mention that reviewers are not exactly always trustworthy...
