Games I Finished in 2016

Really gonna try my best to bust that backlog this year...I promise...seriously!

List items

  • Pretty much the PS2 version all over again, except looking sharper. Still as fun and addictive as ever!

  • This is one of those games that I saw on everyone's "Best of 2015" lists and pleasantly discovered for myself after the fact.

  • This one of of those games I've heard Brad talk up forever, but never got around to playing until now. A little on the short side, but I immediately downloaded the sequel :)

  • As promised, also beat the sequel!

  • One of the best games that came out this year that no one will play. A fantastic platformer with styyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyle for miles.

  • No cannibalism, go me!

  • This was way better than it had any right to be. Does good stuff with the Borderlands lore, and was actually really funny.

  • The best AC game in a long long time.

  • What a fantastic game, was not expecting how good it is. Great humor, art style, and turn-based combat that was fun the whole 20 hours I spent on it.

  • What an amazing game. Had a great time playing through this with my wife (and it might be the most invested I've ever seen her with regards to playing a game!). Maybe one day I'll beat the "challenge"...

  • This is probably my second favorite M & L game after Bowser's Inside Story, definitely miles better than the disappointing Dream Team.

  • I don't understand how Omega Force's third party games are always miles better than their Dynasty / Samurai Warriors stuff. This game continues that trend :)

  • A charming little platformer, just wish it was more challenging.

  • This was entertaining enough - seeing who the next unlockable character turned out to be was the most enjoyable part for me.

  • This is a really clever mash-up of turn-based and real-time mechanics. I hope more people play it!

  • Another LEGO game, another pretty enjoyable time.

  • This is a surprisingly awesome, humorous, and well-designed twin-stick shooter. Has a proper, lengthy campaign and lots of reasons to come back and replay levels.

  • What a silly game with a silly name. Game Freak should make more weird, random games like this.

  • Vinny was right, this is a great adventure game. Really funny and well-acted, puzzles aren't too obtuse either. Pretty lengthy as well, so a good bang for your buck.

  • This was my biggest surprise of the last few months. Wasn't expecting a lot, and got a really fantastic SRPG. It's been a while since I spent 60 hours on a single game, but Stella Glow's lengthy campaign was too hard to put down. Time to move onto Fire Emblem for my SRPG fix :)

  • Takes a lot of guts to lean so hard into biting Dark Souls' style, but this game pulls it off while putting its own unique twist on the gameplay. Really enjoyed the 2D perspective and platforming-based upgrades that you get.

  • I was expecting this to be a simple rehash of the first Ratchet game, but it is so much more and I had a great time!

  • A little rough around the edges (especially with the combat), but I love the concept of this game, and its main hook of D&D-like storytelling combined with cards.

  • This is me going through my backlog and clearing out one of my Souls-like games before I tackle Dark Souls 3. T'was an okay game with a few good ideas here and there. My biggest complaint is the bland level design that caused me to get lost many times.

  • Had a pretty good time on this loot treadmill, and finished all the story missions. Didn't think I would enjoy the game as much as I did. The shooting feels good, and found a few randoms here and there to team up with, both on story missions and in the Dark Zone. Looking forward to playing a bit more now that I've hit the level cap and can do endgame stuff.

  • Welp, this is definitely a weird game.

  • I had more fun with this B-tier RPG than I expected. The last boss is absurdly hard to the point of frustration, though.

  • Would have never heard of this game if not for the GB quick look, seems like no one has played this game. That's a shame, because it is a well-designed, tough-as-nails platformer.

  • My wife is now obsessed with this game, she loves the aesthetics, characters, and humor. We had a good time playing through it together for the first time. There were a few adventure game puzzle head-scratchers, but no problem here with consulting a walkthrough :)

  • Not bad for a $1 eShop game. A little shallow, but entertaining in short bursts.

  • A very chill version of Harvest Moon / Story of Seasons that is heavier on the story and RPG-lite battling.

  • I'm usually not into tense, horror-type games, but I enjoyed this one way more than expected. It is little too long with what feels like too much padding here and there, along with some sections that felt like trial-and-error, but still a good game. They really nailed the aesthetic of the Alien Universe, for sure.

  • Definitely the best Uncharted game, story-wise. Felt like it took a lot of cues from The Last of Us. And absolutely gorgeous! A+!

  • I realize you can't really "beat" this game, but let's say I have played waaaaay more of it than expected :)

  • Been on adventure game kick with my wife after we played Grim Fandango and she loved it. This game was quite funny and enjoyable, and I appreciated that the puzzle solutions were mostly pretty straightforward as well.

  • This reminded me a lot of Everyday Shooter by Jonathan Mak, for some reason (I guess because they are both artsy shooters). I enjoyed the sound design and mechanics here, as well as the high difficulty.

  • This is one of the most fun and stressful co-op games I have played in a while!

  • Man oh man, what a great shooter campaign. Loved every minute! Can't wait to go back and hunt down all the secrets.

  • Played through the PS4 version of this again with my wife (who was playing for the first time), still a fun game!

  • Not my favorite "walking simulator" out there, but still okay.

  • I really liked the humor and aesthetics, but the game would have been better without the platforming sections.

  • A fun, cute, platformer with heart! Really enjoyed.

  • I found this to be quite a compelling story, with the two main leads providing fantastic voiceover performances.

  • A fun game with a good look and a interesting "chose your own adventure" hook. Looking forward to playing through the rest of the possible endings.

  • I can't believe this game managed to tie up all the loose ends from the trilogy...what an ending!

  • Hug button. Nuff said.

  • It's impressive how much just adding a second set of boxes complicates the puzzle types set forth by the original game. This treads some old ground, but it's so much more of a brainburner that I was still engaged the whole time.

  • The story did nothing for me, but the Mirror's Edge mechanics are still a lot of fun.

  • <3 <(^_^)>

  • Barely a game, but I got enough humor out of the $2 I paid for it.

  • This game reminded me of Broken Age in that it was also a Kickstarted point-and-click adventure game where I really liked the first half, but then the puzzles got super hard and obtuse in the second half. Still, overall, an enjoyable globetrotting adventure.

  • Pretty cool mystery game.

  • Really enjoyed the gameplay, aesthetics, and humor of this game.

  • Had more fun with this than expected, based on word of mouth. The story and main character weren't too appealing, but I liked the gameplay, regardless of the simplification of the hacking. Interested to see how the sequel turns out.

  • Man, this is one of my favorite roguelikes to come out.

  • Not too bad for a little 99 cent distraction.

  • Had more fun with this dumb sniping game than I expected. The stealth mechanics were pretty well implemented, and the game gave you a lot of ways to tackle objectives.

  • Really enjoyed this game, even just playing the single-player portion. The color-changing platforming mechanics are really neat and interesting. Soundtrack is great too!

  • Cool little puzzle game on the 3DS.

  • You get so mobile so fast in this game that the climbing barely matters anymore, not sure how I feel about that. Seems like a sequel where they added a bunch of stuff, but weren't sure how to make a cohesive game out of it.

  • What a weird but super addictive game.

  • This game exceeded my expectations, for sure. It's very mysterious, and doesn't provide a lot of direction, but it's really fun to explore. The music and language mechanics that are central to the game are really cool too. Loved it!

  • Been a while since I could get into a fighting game, but really enjoying this one.

  • This is one of the funniest (and fun) games I have had the pleasure of playing. And it goes off the rails in the last hour in a delightful way. ACE Team, keep making weird games, please.

  • This game was a very pleasant surprise for me; it went from being a complete unknown to one of my favorite games this year. It doesn't do anything super mind-blowing, but it's a dungeon crawler with so many great quality of life features, a decent story, and really unique classes with interesting mechanics that are very different from the typical sword guy, paladin, wizard, etc.

  • I'd like my real programming job more if it was this fun :)

  • This is a lame standalone game with barely any main story quests, it's basically just a bunch of side missions.

  • My wife and I have played a ton of this since I bought it on sale. Really fun co-op loot game with shooting mechanics that feel good.

  • Played through the PS4 re-release of this a couple times, got to lv. 50, all that good stuff. It's rough around the edges, but I still love this game to death.

  • A very unique tower defense game. Gets a little repetitive and grindy from time to time (plus it's like 25 hours to beat the main story), but I enjoyed it overall.

  • A pretty darn difficult game, but a lot of fun. Frentic, smooth robot-blasting action!

  • Pretty similar to ACC: China, but I still enjoy this offshoot side-scrolling AC series.

  • Finally got around to finishing the last 1/3 of this game...I get too easily distracted by other games :/ Easily my favorite of the Souls-like games! Also beat the Old Hunters DLC, which was insanely difficult.

  • I loved everything about this Human Revolution followup except for how abruptly it ended...sorta felt like they ran out of time/money there at the end.

  • What a dumb, funny game.

  • Played this as my Halloween game, not as spooky as I would have liked. I think the game is at its best when it is messing with you in terms of your phsyical place in the world; it was good at making you uneasy and confused about where you were at.

  • This game turned out to be one of my biggest surprises of the year. The episodic format worked wonders, and has kept me engrossed for months on end, encouraging me to replay and master all the content on display.

  • I don't even like Minecraft, but this game is fantastic!!! I loved it so much :) The motif, the quest-driven nature, the funny writing, the creativity, it's all so good.

  • Another great surprise! I never played the first game, but the campaign of this game was just so much pure fun. And there are such diverse mechanics and levels packed into a short campaign. I've dabbled with the multiplayer and enjoyed that as well too.

  • I spent about 40 hours or so beating enough puzzles to get to the credits...and now there's a bunch more!!! Anyways, this is a great game.

  • What a great followup to the original game...I'd say it is better in every aspect except that I found the story to be a little weak. Was worth the wait on PS4, especially getting all the DLC and addons for free.

  • This was a fun little detective game. I wish they hadn't shoehorned "combat" into the game, it was easily the weakest part.

  • One of my favorite co-op games in a long time - my wife got hooked on playing it as well. It balances being accessible and easy to control with a good difficulty curve that really ramps up by the end.

  • The gameplay got a little repetitive by the end, but the setting, story, and writing kept me playing until the finale.

  • I enjoyed the single player story, just like MK9.

  • I think this game set a record for longest period of time it has taken me to finish a game (over a 7 month period in this case!). That's not a knock against it, it's just a long game - around 75 hours just for one playthrough. It's a very engrossing JRPG with great world-building, characters, and dialogue. It ends on a hell of a cliffhanger, so I'm glad the sequel is out already. Time to spend the majority of 2017 playing through THAT!

  • Alex inspired me to play through the Mega Man games again myself - I was able to burn through the first game in one sitting, in a little over an hour. Not bad!

  • There are some parts of this I really liked (combat, open-world, bromance) and some I hated (chapter 13, the second half of the game becoming very linear and making the story super confusing), but I'm impressed this game was released at all. Happy to have played it though, make no mistake.
