July Vita lineup and upcoming titles

It's July, and I'm admittedly not back on track. In part that was deliberate because I wanted to wait a bit since there wasn't a whole lot new to include after last months very late update, but still the plan was do get to it a bit earlier. Still, it's not quite as late as last month. Anyway, here it is, my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

This month's releases is a selection of indie games of all sorts and shapes. Puzzle games (Waking Violet, Phil's Epic Fill-a-Pix Adventure,) shoot 'em ups (Super Destronaut DX, Ice Cream Surfer,) a tower defense platformer (Spacejacked,) and a procedural generated metroidvania side-scroller thing (Chasm.)

Shifting to new games, Aksys again delivers with localizations of Demon Gaze developer Experience's horror adventure Death Mark, as well as more otome with Code: Realize: Wintertide Miracles. Indie adventure games Stay and The Dreamlands: Aisling's Quest are also coming, as well as the remaster of the infamous Night Trap. Over in Japan, Experience confirmed a Vita release for their sequel to Death Mark simply called NG, while Gameloft revealed they're porting their mobile hack 'n slash RPG Dungeon Hunter 5 (no news about a western release so far.)

In less happy news, the rumored YU-NO localization was finally confirmed, but only for Steam and PS4. So barring remote play, the Vita is sitting this one out. Also the release of Omega Labyrinth Z was abruptly canceled. The translation is most likely done, and could in theory be used for a mainland Asia release in the future, but for now that game will not be available in English.

And I think we're done. Not much in the way of confirmed releases for next month, so you'll have to settle for a bit of low-budget... charm with The Dreamlands: Aisling's Quest:

June Vita lineup and upcoming titles

It's June... and I'm late... again. I can only blame the combo of the Twitch Doctor Who marathon, E3, and a persistent, nasty summer cold. That out of the way, this is still my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

After initially looking pretty barren, last month filled out nicely, and June looks pretty nice as well. You've got DRPG The Lost Child from NISA, which is actually a spin-off from 2011 action game El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. Otome Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk from Aksys. Rhythm game Musynx and shooter Riddled Corpses EX. And after years of waiting, Kickstarter localized visual novel Muv-Luv, as well as sequel Muv-Luv Alternative, are arriving, as is EastAsiaSoft's SRPG Rainbow Skies.

Looking at new game announcements, for a platform that has traditionally been ignored at E3, this was surprisingly one of its more respectable showings. Atlus confirmed localizations for Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight and Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, as well as Catherine: Full Body. XSEED snuck out a reveal of the the otome visual novel London Detective Mysteria. And Limited Run Games are taking a step into fully fledged Vita game publishing with the visual novel The House in Fata Morgana. Else, Kickstarted funded Clock Tower spiritual successor NightCry (previously Project Scissors) confirmed a western release and indie Waking Violet is coming as well.

Over in Japan there was not a lot happening. Mainly Gust announced a new Atelier game, Nelke and the Legendary Alchemists, and a few visual novels.

Finally, we learnt last month that Sony is ending production in the west for physical game cards for the Vita in early 2019. This is unfortunate, because small publishers like Limited Run Games games had found a profitable niche releasing small print runs of indie games and the occasional localization. Smaller indies have said straight out that these physical releases alone made Vita ports of their games viable, as there's a devoted audience of Vita collectors out there who more or guarantee several thousand copies sold at full price. Still, Limited Run have made it clear they intend to get through as many games they can before the deadline. And game card production will still continue in Asia, where there are companies like Hong Kong based eastasiasoft that are producing English-language physical releases for a global audience. So, I guess we're back to what has been the story of Vita's life since its release... Don't count the little bastard out yet.

And with that, we're done. Come back next month for... Hmm... Not a lot of stuff on the schedule so far. Well, they're already up on PSN, but the (Amazon exclusive?) retail release of the Muv-Luv games are due out then, so here's a trailer for one of them:

May Vita lineup and upcoming titles

It's May, and my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

Only one release scheduled for May so far, otome visual novel 7'scarlet from Aksys, about college student traveling to a mountain town to look for clues surrounding her brother's disappearance one year earlier. As always, expect more games to show up as we get further into the month.

Moving on to new game announcements, Demetrios developer CowCat are making an enhanced port of PC shooter Riddled Corpses, XSEED are bringing over the second Fate "Warriors" title Fate/Extella Link, and we finally got a confirmation on the long rumoured localization of the Punch Line anime tie-in visual novel from Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi.

And I think that was it. Come back next month for anime vs. Cthulhu in The Lost Child:

April Vita lineup and upcoming titles

Ah, it feels like March was barely a week ago, which admittedly it was due to my very late post. Anyway, it's April and I'm trying to get back on track again with my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

Another month, and another otome retail release, as Aksys brings us Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly. Download-wise we have a true Vita exclusive, indie adventure platformer Sir Eatsalot. There is also another NIS unconventional 2D action RPG title with Penny-Punching Princess, gritty comic adventure Metropolis: Lux Obscura, classic fighting game The King of Fighters '97, 2D dogfighter Rogue Aces, and punishing pixel art platformer League of Evil.

Due to my late March post most game announcements were covered there, only new addition is side-scrolling adventure Chasm.

And it looks like we're done! Come back next month for more otome with 7'scarlet.

March Vita lineup and upcoming titles

Ah, March. This could have gone better... and faster, but finally I'm here again my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

This months releases is headlined by an otome sequel double-bill, with Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms and Code: Realize: Future Blessings, both getting full retail releases. Over on the PSN store, there's another sizable visual novel - Root Double: Before Crime * After Days finally coming out after its successful Kickstarter campaign over two years ago. There's also Arc System Works' mech action game Damascus Gear: Operation Osaka, and indies Midnight, North, NeuroVoider, One Eyed Kutkh, bit Dungeon+, and Reverie.

Moving onto new game announcements, NIS America is bringing the Cthulhu mythos inspired dungeon RPG The Lost Child to the west. And we're getting a remake and a port of 80s home computer bounce 'em up Bounder, and a port of mobile platformer Devious Dungeon. Over in Japan, NIS revealed Liar Princess and the Blind Prince, which looks like another puzzle platformer in the vein of A Rose in the Twilight.

And it looks like done. I guess I should get started on April straight away to avoid another embarrassing delay like this. Come back then for for adventure platformer Sir Eatsalot, a genuine Vita exclusive in this day and age.

February Vita lineup and upcoming titles

It's February, I'm here again my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

Up for release this month is Mercenary Kings, one of the longer residing titles on my list having originally been announced in April 2014. It's now coming in an apparently improved "Reloaded" version. Also improved, expanded due out is anime fighting game Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], and tower defense RPG Defender's Quest DX. Finally, we're getting another NIS retro RPG with The Longest Five Minutes, and remake of Square Enix's classic action RPG Secret of Mana.

As for new game announcements, January was a fairly quiet month. Mainly another SNK port is coming - The King of Fighters '97, and Kemco is releasing Dragon Sinker, another of their retro RPGs. A translated trophy list for Damascus Gear Operation Osaka also showed up, but that remains unconfirmed so far.

And there you go. Come back next month for Penny-Punching Princess.

January Vita lineup and upcoming titles

New year, new releases. It's January, I'm here again my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

Though no full retail titles, we've got several games scheduled for release this month. The most notable ones would be Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory, another RPG in the Bandai Namco franchise, and Iconoclasts, an indie metroidvania that seems to have a hefty amount of 2D animation. Among somewhat lower profile releases, there's indies The Count Lucanor, Energy Invasion, and Little Red Lie, and minigame collection Vegas Party. As usual expect more releases to be revealed as the months goes on.

Looking at new title announcements, December was perhaps not the best month, but still confirmation of Harvest Moon-like Stardew Valley and Hopoo's side-scrolling Hotline Miami-thing Deadbolt should make some happy.

As is usually the case Japan fared better with Catherine: Full Body, an expanded port of Atlus' 2011 puzzle game (which was confirmed to be coming west, though whether that includes the Vita version remains to be seen), Fate/Extella Link a sequel to the Fate franchise hack and slash spin-off, and more anime mech tactics with Super Robot Wars X. Also (bi)annual sports franchises Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2018 and Winning Post 8 2018 will make an appearance, and few more visual novels.

In less positive news, we're continuing to see indie games outright canceling or "putting on indefinite hiatus" previously announced Vita ports. Last month it was 1980s homage Crossing Souls and SRPG Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs, though there are probably more that simply quietly shelve previously announced Vita ports without mentioning it publicly.

This is perhaps inevitable as smaller developers with limited budgets/programming expertise use engines like Unity to ease development, and these engines in turn rely on hardware power and gigabytes of memory to accomplish that. Once cutting edge mobile hardware, the Vita is now over 6 years old and thus even a simple 2D game can struggle to run on it without significant optimization from the developer. However, that obviously isn't the whole story either, as otherwise I wouldn't be here posting about new Vita games either!

Anyway, looks like I'm done for now. Come back next month to learn The Secret of Mana!

December Vita lineup and upcoming titles

It's December, and yet again I'm here my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

Looking at new releases for December, we only have a port of the classic SNES RPG Romancing SaGa 2 on the docket for now. As usual expect more titles to show up as the month goes on.

As for new titles announced last month, pQube is bringing over roguelike Omega Labyrinth Z, notable for its... err... unique leveling up system. Also "fast-paced action-arcade game" Russian Subway Dogs is getting a Vita version, and Arcade Distillery is working action RPG SkullPirates and strategy game War Theatre. There's been some murmurs that side-view shooter Deadbolt and dual-joystick shooter NeuroVoider might be coming, though no firm confirmation yet. Over in Japan, Aquaplus revealed they're working on a remake of the first Utawarerumono SRPG, originally released for PC and PS2 in the early 2000s.

And we're done! See you next year! (I'd put a Digimon trailer here, but I did so last month, so here is one for Romancing Saga 2 instead.)

November Vita lineup and upcoming titles

It's November, and I'm here again with my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

After the pretty hefty October there's not a lot of releases announced for this month so far, though DRPG Demon Gaze II is a pretty notable one - a follow-up to one of the earlier Vita success stories. There's also lightweight strategy game Tokyo Tattoo Girls, a surprising candidate for a retail release. In the download realm indie action platformer Maldita Castilla is so far the only thing on the schedule, but as usual expect more to be revealed as the month progresses.

As for new game announcements, Idea Factory joins in on the otome flood by releasing Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms, while retro sidecroller Xenon Valkyrie is getting an enhanced port. In Japan things were a bit more lively, with Kadokawa's Metal Max Xeno being a new installment in the long running post-apocalyptic turn-based vehicle combat RPG series. Arc System Works is making rhythm game - Radio Hammer Station, and NIS has another weird stratgey/management/RPG hybrid thing with Your Four Knight Princesses Training Story. There were also several visual novels, including a remake of the escape room-ish Doukoku Soshite...

And we're done! Come back next month for... well, not a whole lot announced for December yet. So I guess I'll have to cheat and post a trailer for Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory even though it isn't due out until January.

October Vita lineup and upcoming titles

It's October, and I'm here again with my monthly list of current and upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita. As usual it is focused on the North American market, with Europe and Japan exclusive titles in their own sections below.

Another good month for new retail releases, with 5pb.'s visual novel Chaos;Child taking the spotlight. There's also NIS' cutesy 2D survival horror game Yomawari: Midnight Shadows and otome visual novel Bad Apple Wars. Special mention to SRPG Summon Night 6: Lost Borders, which after multiple delays seems to be finally coming out for real. Over in the downloads section there's several indies, including twin-stick shooter Son of Scoregasm and Japanese indie Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle.

New games-wise, the indies keep coming. Puzzle games 36 Fragments of Midnight and Semispheres, horror game DISTRAINT, and the Ghouls 'n Ghosts inspired platformer Battle Princess Madelyn are on their way. Also TACS Games, a big supporter of PlayStation Mobile back when that was a thing, have announced a full Vita game Super Skull Smash Go! 2 Turbo. There's also been some twitter teasing and a trophy list for Cursed Castilla, though the developer has yet to officially commit.

And it looks like I'm done! Come back next month for Demon Gaze II - now with 50% more demon!
