    Overview

Steam Greenlight was launched by Valve on August 30th, 2012 as a way to poll the Steam community about which games they would like to see added to the service, as well as to provide feedback to game developers. Within the first day, over 600 games were submitted and 2.3 million votes were placed. However, early concerns about discoverability and fraudulent or gag game listings lead to Valve instituting a $100 submission fee with the proceeds going to Child's Play. McPixel would become the first greenlit game to be released on Steam on September 26th, 2012. Valve would later use the Greenlight service to introduce non-game software, as well as "Concepts" where games or software creators in the early stages of development could gather feedback on their works.

On June 6, 2017, submissions to Steam Greenlight were closed in preparation of Steam's transition to Steam Direct a week later. Under Steam Direct, developers apply for developer designation on Steam, at which point they can submit games directly to the service for a $100 rate per game, which is then returned to the developer when the game reaches $1,000 in revenue.
